IMPROVEMENT IN TRUSS-BRIDGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,347, dated December 29, 1874; application filed October 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. WINTERS, of Attica, in the county of Lapeer and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Bridge, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists, essentially, of plates and rods for coupling the stress and sway braces to the chords; also, plates for coupling the chords to the caps, all as hereinafter described.

A represents the chords, which are fitted on the caps B in castings 0, having flanges D for embracing the caps also flanges or ribs E for embracing and separating the difl'erent members of the chords. F represents a cap, to be fitted upon the chords over plate 0. It also has ribs E for separating and embracing the members of the chords. Through these plates, also through the cap, extends a suspendingrod, G, down between two posts, H, to a shoe, I, for holding the stress'braces J at the foot, said shoe having a little cavity, K, for the braces to rest in 5 also a groove, L, in two sides, for receiving the posts to be kept in place thereby, and at the same time be allowed to rise and fall for adjusting it to the braces. M represents the plate for the cap to the brace. It has a socket, N, in the under side, (shown in section, Fig. 1,) to receive the upper end of the brace; also a flange, O, at the outside, and another, P, at the inside of the top, and also a rib, Q, at the middle. The outside flange is notched a little on the inside, at S, to receive the ends of the sway-braces R properly. The inside flange is notched through the middle, at T, for the cross-piece U, and the rib Q, which is raised up to cover the socket, is shouldered at V, for the middle member of the chord to bear against to sustain the end pressure of the brace. W represents the plate for the support of the sway-braces c at the cap. It has flanges X for em bracing the cap also a flange, Y, at the outside, to hold the braces. This flange Y has a hole through it for a rod, Z, by which it is connected to the plate (3, said plate having an ear, Z, at the outside for the purpose. The plate M is bolted up to the under side of the two outside members of the chord. By screwing up the rods G and Z the braces can be tightened up to any required tension.
The construction is very simple, and the arrangement of the plates allows of fitting in the braces with but little labor.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of bolt the plate M with the chord-braces J and cap 13, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of plate W, braces a, rod Z, and plate M with the chord, substan tially as specified.
3. The cap F, plate 0, and rod G, combined with the chord, substantially as specified.
4. The plate 0, having flanges D and ribs E, combined with the cap and the chord, substantially as specified.
5. The plate M, having socket N, rib Q, and notched flanges P S, in combination with the chord and braces J and a, substantially as specified.
6. The plate W, having flanges X and notched flange Y, combined with the cap B,
braces a, and rod Z, substantially as specified.
7. The shoe I, having notch K and grooves L, combined with the posts H and rod G, substantially as specified.
