Application filed August 11, 1925t tSer ia1 No. 49,510.*
. mentsin Steam Driers, .of which the following is a specification.
' ,The main iob 'ect of [this {invention is to ,provideran inn-proved type of construction for a drying akilnjhaui-ng special features adapted .for zconcentrating the heat in an area above a conveyor belt upon which the material 150 be dried-is approximately thru -.the .entire length :of the kiln, entering at one end/with its surfaces-an treated conditiomkand existing atthe opposite end as a completely dried product. I
Another object is lto provide a drying kiln having a novel arrangement of steam coils for generating the heat used in the kiln. This drying kiln is designed particularly for thepurpose of dryingv a lithographic paper or the like upon Which a glazing coat such as shellac or varnish has been applied and is further adapted to completenumeral 10 indicates the roof of a relatively 1y dry the varnish on the material in its passage thru the drying kiln on a conveyor; The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawing. 7 e Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevational viewof the drying kiln, showing a portion thereof broken away to illustrate the interior design,
Figure 2 is a top plan view of Figure 1, with various portions thereof broken away to disclose the interior.
' Referring in detail to the drawing, the
long compartment, the shortest possible length for arriving at good results being approximately 30 feet. The roof of the kiln 1s oined at its longitudinal edges bysides 11 and 12 and has a bottom 13 which provides a relatively long hollow chamber 14 in which the entire drying apparatus is, housed. The drying kiln is open at both ends and is supported upon st-anchions consisting of angle irons 15 in order to raise the kilnto a convenient position for its use. At one end a' skeleton structure consisting of a post 16' removed some distance from the end stan'chions 15 is connected therewith by inclined angle irons 17 which form .af'platform on which bearing lugs 18 are; mounted. These bearing lugs v.sup-
port. 'aishaft 19 onwhicha vroller .20 is mounted) At one open 'endof the :drying kiln, a rolleri21 is mounted ona shaft journalled in 'the framework-of the kiln and an endless conveyor belt 22-,is trainedwabout these rollers QOPEtIld 21, passing longitudinally thru the drying kiln which .receivesfithe material from the feeding platform .provided .bythestruct-ure members 1.6 and 17.
WhQFGtlIGLCODVQ-YOP belt 22 enters the drying kiln, adjacent the 'ifeeding ,pl-atform, a pair. of rollers;.23 and'24 are mounted in the framework of the, kiln, one vabove the other ,so thatqthe up per roller23 supports the upper .surface of the conveyor belt 22 while the lower-surface of the conveyor .belt
rides between .both rollersg'23 gander and is;
snpported bytthe "latter. This construction .is necessary inorder to permit the conveyor belt to enter the drying kiln atan inclined plane and then diverge to the horizontal.
Nearthe delivery end of the drying kiln and beside the latter, a boiler 25 or other means of generating steam is mounted on a base 26. A steam delivery pipe 27 extends from the boiler toward a position intermediate the length of the drying kiln and enters into the chamber 14 of the drybelow the conveyor belt 22, two sets of delivery manifolds 29 are mounted in a suitmg kiln thru pipes 28. Within the kilnparallel at an inclined plane toward the outer ends of the drying kiln and terminate in return manifolds which commumcate with each other thru a steam return pipe 7 33, which has an outlet pipe 34 connected thereto, the latter leading directly to the boiler 25.- p
The material with whichthis drying kiln is to be usedis paper or the like, coated with varnish or shellac which must be quickly dried. These sheets of material after being coated with a given substance are laid upon the conveyor belt 22 on the feeding platform comprised of the members 17 and 16. This conveyor belt is actuated by a source of power not shown on the drawing and slowly passes into the drying kiln, extending thru the entire length of the kiln and conveying the material thereon thru the kiln to the opposite end of said kiln where it is delivered in dried condition. ing from the steam pipes 30 passes upwardly, heats the conveyor belt, and circu lates into the chamber between the upper kiln in order to serve as drains for the condensed vapor in the coil system, which vapor enters the return pipe 33 and is delivered to the boiler 25. r I
We claim p 7 1 1. A drying kiln'comprising a longitudinal body open at both ends, coils in said kiln extending from the center to the open ends of the kiln, and a conveyor passing thru said kiln.
2. A drying kiln comprising a longitudinal body open at both ends, rollers at said open ends of the body,'a platform formed at one end of said body supporting a roller thereon, a conveyor belt passing over the platform entirely thru the drying kiln, a boiler exterior of said kiln, and coils in said kiln connected to said boiler;
3. A drying kiln comprising a longitudinal body open at both ends, rollers at said The heat radiat-' open ends of the body, a platform formed at one end of said body supporting a roller thereon, a conveyor belt passing over the platform entirely thru the, drying kiln, a boiler exterior of said kiln in said boiler comprising manifolds mutually spaced apart, pipes connecting saidmanifolds, said boiler communicating thru pipes with adjacent manifolds, and a return pipe connecting'the opposing manifolds with the boiler.
4. A drying kiln comprising a longitudinal body open at both ends, rollers at said open ends of the body, a platform formed at one end of said body supporting a roller thereon, a conveyor belt passing over the platform entirely thru the drying kiln, a
boiler exterior of said kiln, coils in'said boiler comprising manifolds mutually spaced apart, pipes connecting said manifolds, said boiler communicating thru pipes with adjacent manifolds, a return pipe connecting the opposing manifolds with the boiler, said coils being inclined from. the center to a lower level outwardly toward'the open ends of the kiln to drain the return pipes.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
