Gimme, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of 1V orcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Reenferced Packing Box, of which the following is aspecification! This invention relates to a packing box reenforced with metal banding and has for its general object the provision of a boxhav ing a new and'novel arrangement and disposition of metal banning from which construction important and improved results are obtained. With my new construction, a box of greatly increased strength is produced, while at the same time the thickness of the lumber used may be materially reduced. My improved box is also much more difficult to open and tends greatly to discourage and reduce t-heftduring transit.

Referring to the drawings, my improved box is formed with end members 10, sides 11, a bottom 12, and a top 13, the bottom and top being collectively. designated herein as covers. These several parts of the box may be made of any suitable material, wood being commonly used. In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the sides 11 and covers 12 and 13 are provided with slots 14: extending cross-wise of the end portions thereof, these slots being adapted to receive four pieces of metal strap or banding 15, 16. 17 and 18 at each end of the box.

In the preferred construction, the pieces of handing or strapping 15 and 16 are inserted in slots 14 of the sidesll and the sides 11 are then secured to the ends 10 by fastening members 20. The ends of the straps 15 and 16 are then bent closely about the corners of the box ends 10, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the covers 12 and 13 are then attached to complete the box.

Each of these 'faitening members 21 at the corners of the box extends through two overlapping pieces of strap or banding at each side of each corner of the box. The corners are thus double bound and it is also found that the fastening members 21 extending through two pieces of banding are muchmore firmly held in the box and havea .much greater resistance to withdrawal.

It has been found by actual test that a box thus constructed will safely receive a much greater weight of material and. that it will resist rough usage more successfully than a box of the usual construction having twice the thickness of lumber. This decrease in the thickness of the lumber not only reduces the cost of the material entering into the box but also reduces the Weight thereof with a corresponding reduction in freight charges. I

For some purposes, the permissible reduction in thickness of lumber leaves the sides and covers so thin that the slots 14 are not advisable. Under these circumstances, the construction shown in Fig. 4 is desirable, in wh ch the straps 30 and 31 are placed outside of the sides 32 and the covers It will be understood that the projecting portions of the straps are not limited to any particular length and that they may extend any desired distance across the adjacent sides or ends of the box.

' Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is 1.
