H. F. HAN KS TIIER Filed June 12 1924 L? I G I f Patented Apr. 27, 192.
UNI'IE STA-EES 'satsar HARRY F. nANKs, or Mvsrid'oonnnorrou'r.
i TIMER.
Application filed. June 12,
To aZZ wlwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY F. HANns, a citizen of the United States, residingat Mystic, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improveinents in Timers; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is the provision of a timer for controlling the ignition system of internal coinbustion engines such' as generally constructed for driving motor vehicles, and the specific purpose of the present invention is to iinprovethe timer generally provided for the Ford engine, Whereby to obviate the necessity of lubrieating the Contacts and Which prevents pitting and Wear and insnres a firm and positive contact and avoids the nccessity of frequentreplaceinent.
Other objects and advantages Will be apparents and suggest themselves as the n-w. ture of the invention is understood.
lVhile the draWing illustrates an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referrinp; to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the application:
Figure 1. is an elevational view of a timer as seen from the inner end;
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 8 is a sectional detail of contact and holder;
Figure l is a detail view of contact; i
Figure 5 is an end view of a brush holder;
Figur-e 6 is a detail view of the brush carrier; and
Figure 7 is a detail view of one of the brush contacts.
Correspondng and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the *drawing by like reference characters.
The nuinei'al 10 denotes the usual timer shell or casing of a Ford engine Which is provided upon its inner side With the ordia brush the rotary 1924. sann-no. 719,5'76.
nary fiber ringll and brush Contacts Which constitute theV gist of the present invention and Which replace the usual' segment contacts.
The rotary contact is mounted upon the timer sha'l't 12 to rotate thereivith, and comprises a metal sleeve 13, a disk 14 of suitable insulating material inounted upon the sleeve 13 and a contact l'secured in an opening formed in the disk 14: and connecting atits inner end With the sleeve 13 and having its outer end fiush With the periphery of the disk so as to co-act With the casing Contacts. V
Each of the brush casing contacts comprises a holder 16 provided With a stem 17- and a lateral extension 18, the stem 17 serving as means for iconnecting the holder to the casing 10 in the usual Way. A recess 18 is formed in the outer face of the holder 16 and receives the brush carrier Which comprises a rinff 19 and a shank 20, the latter being; pivoted at one' end to the lateral eX- tension 18 by means of a pin 21. Said brush carrier is cut away as at 20a to provide clearance for its pivotal movement. The brush contact 22, preferably of carbon, fits snugly Within the ring 19 and has an outer flang'e 23 at its inner -end to prevent outivard displacement of the Contacts. A helical spring 24 normally enerts an outWard pressure upon the brush contact 22 and the free end 19 of the brush carrier to urge the same out- Wardly to the position of Figure 8 Whereby to, hold the Contacts in engagement With the roller 111. While it is preferred to have the brush contact 22 of carbon., nevertheless it may consistof copper or other suitable niaterial. Attimer constructed in accordance With the present invention obviates the necessity for lubricating the contacts and prevents irregular Wear, obvates pitting and permits of ready replacement of the brushes and insures positive contact and a smooth running engine.
'What is cla-iined is 1. In a timer of the'c-haracter specified, a casing contact co-inprising a brush holder lhav-ing a lateral extension and provided in its outer side With a recess andan opening, afbrush earrierv disposed Within said recess and pivoted at one end to the lateral extension of the holder, a brush at the opposite end of the Carrier having a lateral retaining flange, and a spring in line With said brush and Within the opening of the holder and normally *exerting an outWard pressure upon the free end of the Carrier. i
2. In a timer of the character specified, a easing contact eoinprising a brush holder provided WithV a reeess and an opening, a brush Carrier disposed With said recess and pivoted to the holder, a brush borne by Vthe Carrier having a lateral retaining flange engagng the Carrier, and a spring in line With said brush located Within the opening of the holder and norinally exerting an out-y Ward pressurev upon the free end of the carrier.
3. A. casingI contact for a tiiner of the character specified, the saine eoinprising a holder wear/4:?
having a stem and a lateral extension:y and,V
having a reeess and an opening in its outer side, a brush Carrier eoinprising a ring and a shank and disposed Within the recess ot the holder and pivoted at one end to the lateral extension thereof, a brush itted Within the ring of the earrier and having an outer HARRY F. Haans.
