Description

F.M. slLcHnlsT.
Schaal-Desks.
Patented Dec*l 29,11874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcEc FRANCIS M. GILGHRIST, OF GREENFIELD, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCHOOL-DESKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,271, dated December 29, 1874; application led' July 7, 1874. i
- which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists more particularly in the construction and arrangement of the devices for supporting a schooldesk, as will be herein after more full y' set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a rear elevation ot' a school-desk embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same through the line fr, Fig. l.
D represents the book-case of a school-desk, the front C of which forms the back for the seat. The front part of the book-case D is supported by means of two crossed legs or supports, A A, which stand lengthwise with the desk, and extend from the licor to the corners of the book-case. These supports are fitted closely to the ends of the book-case and the top of the desk, thus both irmly supporting and bracing the desk, whether fastened to the oor or not, and yet without any strain calculated to draw out the screws with which the desk is put together. The legs or supports A are let into each other where they cross,
and in the cross of the supports is placed and notched down a horizontal bar, B, which connects and braces two or more desks, thus making them seltsupporting. This bar by this mode or" attachment becomes low enough to receive the seat on top, and when the seat is turned up the bar can readily be stepped over, thus obviating the only objection to this kind of desks. The back part E of the seat is made fast to the bar B and the crossed supports A A, while the front and main part G of the seat is hinged to the back part, so as to be turned up and down, as may be required. The rear part of the book-case is supported and braced from the horizontal bar B by means of a double metallic brace, H.
A school-desk of this construction is equally as strong and durable, and far more economical, than those nowr generally used, which have iron side frames.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe combination of the book-case D, back C, seat E G, crossed supports A A, horizontal bar B, and double brace H, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. Y
FRANCIS M. GILCHEIST.
