WILLIAM GLEDHILL, or BARKISLAND, NEAR HALIFAX, ENGLAND.
WEIGI-ITING Morrow.
Applicatlon filed November 8, 1924. 'Serial No. 748,688.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TILLIAM GLEDHI L, a subject of Great Britaim residing at Barkisland, near Halifax, Englanchhave invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to lVeighting 'Motions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a loom weighting motion and has for its chief object to construct same in such manner that in addition to dispensing with heavy weights it will keep a uniform width of cloth from one end of a piece-to the other by automatically de creasing the tension on'the warp beam as the warp gets less in diameter.
-. According to this invention means are provided whereby variation in the diameter, of the warp beam automatically varies thev leverage which a weight exerts on a pivotally mounted bar or whip roller over which the warp threads from the beam pass.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a rear view, and
Fig. 2 an end view of part of a loom fitted with a weighting motion in accordance with this invention, and
Fig. 3 is a section of a portion of the mecl1- anism lookingin the direction of the arrows 3-3 in Fig. 2.
A indicates a whip roller that is rotatably mounted in two arms a which are rigidlyfixed on a shaft a which is carried by brackets a detachably secured on the loom end frames B and formed with recesses o to enable the shaft a to occupy different positions. The arms a are connected to the upper ends of ropes or chains 0 which pass around the necks or ruflies 0 of the warp beam G. The lower ends of the ropes or chains are attached to abar 0 that is' cranked at c and mounted in levers c. These levers are pivoted at c and resistance is offered to their upward movement by strong springs 0 To enable the weight to be taken olf the ropes or chains 0 when it is required to turn the beam back, or remove it, the cranked rod c is provided with a handle 0 which can be yided at their upper ends with another spacing member (Z The latter is connected by a link 05 and nut (Z with an arm d that is rigidly fixed on the shaft a The device for'automatically regulating the leverage exerted by the weight lever D on the whip roller. Aas' the warp beam C decreases in size comprises a plate or shoe E. This plate is pivotally mounted on the upper end of an arm 6 that is rigidly fixed on a shaft c This shaft is rotatably mounted in a bracket 6 that is attached we portion of the loom frame and a portion of such shaft projects beyond the loom end frame and has rigidly fixed on it an arm 6 Pivotally attached to this arm is a bar 6 which passes between the plates (Z? and is secured thereto by a bolt or screw 6 which also secures the plates together. The bar 6* is formed with a number of perforations e to enable the position of the roller (5 to be varied in relation to the ith this construction when the warp beam is full the parts occupy the position shown, the arm d being in its near est position in relation to the fulcrum c that the weight 65 exerts a gradually decreasing leverage on the whip roller A and so maintains a constant tension on the warp threads C When weaving heavy cloth the plates 45 are moved nearer to the pivoted end of theperforated bar 6 so as to bring the roller (2 nearer to the fulcrum 0 and increase the leverage exerted by the weight (Z on the whip roller A. The shaft a would also be mounted in the recess a as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. To weave light cloth the shaft a would be placed in the recess at the right hand end of the bracket a and the plates (i would be moved towards the left hand end of the bar 6 and connected therewith. F indicates a stop for supporting the weighted arm D when the handle 0 is turned in a direction to slacken the chains 0 for enablin the beam C to be taken out or turned ack. i
o What I claimas my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States, is
i. In a loom weighting motion, the combi nation with a warp beam, of flexible c011- nections wound on the necks of the warp beam, pivoted arms connected to the upper ends of the flexible connections, a whip roller carried by pivoted arms, an arm arranged in rigid connection with such arms, a pivot ally mounted weighted arm, a connection between the weighted arm and the arm last mentioned, and means for automatically moving said connection to decrease the leverage exerted by the weighted arm on the whip roller as the beam decreases in diameter.
2. In a loom weighting motion, the combination with a warp beam of flexible connections wound on the necks of the warp beam, pivoted upper and lower arms connected to the respective ends of thesaid flexible connections, springs for exerting pressure against said lower arms, a whip roller carried by the upper arms, an arm arranged in rigid connection with such arms, a weighted arm situated below such arm, a connection between said arm and the weighted arm and a two armed lever provided at one end with a shoe adapted to rest against the warp on the warp beam, and at the other end with a link atta lied to the aforesaid connection, all serving as means for automatically moving said connection to decrease the leverage exerted by the weighted arm on the whip roller as the beam decreases in diameter.
3. In a loom weighting motion, the combination with a warp beam of flexible connections wound on the necks of the warp beam, pivoted upper and lower arms connected to the respective ends of the said flexible connections, springs for exerting pres sure against said lower arms, a whip roller carried by the upper arms, an arm arranged in rigid connection with such arms, a curved weighted arm pivoted below such arm, a connection between said-arm and the curved weighted arm, said connection being provided with a roller adapted to run along the curved surface of the weighted arm, a two armed lever provided at one end with a shoe adapted to rest against the warp on the warp beam and at the other end with a link adjustably attached to the aforesaid connection whereby the leverage which the weighted arm exerts on the pivotally mounted whip roller decreases as the beam decreases in diameter, means tor releasing the tension on the flexible connections and means for supporting the weighted lever when said tension is released.
In testimony whereot I afiix my signature.
