JAMES ANDERSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLIDE AND STEAM VALVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,229, dated December 29, 1874; application filed October 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES ANDERSON, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Steam-Valves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a sectional view of my steam-valve, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
This invention has relation to means for relieving slide-valves from undue friction, by exposing their backs to the atmosphere; and it consists in combining an adjustable hollow trunk, provided with flanges, and resting on top of the slide-valve, and adjustable cap, having a central opening and flange, With an elastic ring between the hollow trunk and cap, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the. annexed drawings, A designates a slide-valve of the D kind, which is constructed with a long table, a, forming the back of the valve. Through the top of the valve-chest B a hole is made, which is preferably of circular form, and which receives through it a trunk, O, the lower end of which is flanged, as shown at b, and ground so as to form a steam-tight joint on the back surface of .the valve. D designates a flanged gland, which surrounds the trunk O, and which serves, in combination with a packing, c, and nuts d on posts 0, to make a steam-tight joint around said trunk.
E designates a circular cap, having a hole, 9, through it, and an annular flange or rib, f, on its lower side. This cap E is confined down upon the trunk O by means of nuts h h, applied on the screw-posts e. The nuts h, underneath the cap E, serve as jam-nuts. Between the cap E and trunk O a ring of indiarubber, or other suitable elastic substance, is applied, as shown at i, Fig. 1, the object of which is to allow the trunk O to be held down on the back of the valve A with a slight elastic pressure.
It will be seen from the above description that nearly the entire back of the valve is exposed to the atmosphere by means of the hollow trunk O and perforated holding-down cap E also, that the trunk O can be held down on the back of the valve with any desired degree of pressure, and adjusted as circumstances require.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hollow trunk O, provided with flanges b b, and resting on top of the slide-valve A, in combination with the adjustable cap E, pro- With a central opening, g, and flan ge f, the elastic ring '5, and adjustable gland D, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
' JAMES ANDERSON.
