OVEN DOOR.
Applicatin filed November 19, 1924. Serial No. 750,810.
T0 aZZ whon z't may concern:
Be it knovvn that I, JOHN J. Toomnv,a oitizen of the United States, residing at Chicago,-n theco'unty of Cook and State of Il1inois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oven Doors, of Whioh the following is a specification.
This invention relabes particularly to means for mounting and counterbalancing oven-doors. The invention may be employed very advantageously, for example, in connection vvith th'e oven-doors of gas-ranges, or electric ranges.
'Ihe primary object is to provide a simple and inexpens1ve means of mou-nting and counterbalancing oven-doors in suoh manner as to rnder the useof springs and latches unnecessary. When the improved device is employed, the door wi1l remain in either the 1; Fig. 3, a vertical seotional view taken as open or the closed position in which it ma be left by the operator.
The invention is illustiated in its preferred embodirnent in the accompanying dravvings, in whioh Fig. 1 represents a broken elevational view of a range-oven equipped with a oounterbalanoed door in acoordanoe with the present imfention; Fig. 2, a broken sectionai view taken as indioated at line 22 of Fig.
indioated at 1ine33 of Fig. -2; Fig. 4, a breken horizontal section taken as indieated at line 14 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5, an inner broken perspective view of one of'the 1ower corners of the oven-door. In the illustration given,A represents an oven having a front frame A'.equi ped with a door A The oven is provi ed at its sides with the usual air flues, 01 airspaces, 1. The oven-door A? may be of any suitable construetion'. In the form shown, it comprises an outer p1ate 2 and a lining plate 3. The lining plate usually is of sheetmetai, and the outer plate may be of either cast-metal 01 of sheet-metal. The oven-door is equippedatits lower corners with combination hinge and counter- -oalanee members 4. E-aeh member 4 has a flat angular head 4 whioh is firmly secured to theouter .plate 2 of the door, as by means of screws 5. The lining plate 3 is applied so as to conoeal the head 4.
Assuming the door to be in the closed position, eaoh member 4 is provided with a rearwardly, or inwardly, extending arm 4 ormed integrally with the head 4; and
is deoreased Wi1en each arm 4" is equipped at or near its rear member 4 is provided with a pivot-perforation 6. The members 4 are made in rights and lefts. The oflset arm 4, in eaoh case, is adapted to work in the air flue, or air spaoe, 1 at the side of the oven, the laterally extending portion 4 of the device extendend with an ofl'set member 4 from vvhich extends an arm 4 The portin 4." of the ing through a perforation, or slot, 7 wit-h which the inner wall 8 of the air space is 11: is common to provide in one of the cured to the oven frame A by means of pintles 12 which engage the pivot perforations 6.
1n Fig. 2, the door is shown in full lines in the olosed position, and the oount'er weight 11 is shown in full lines in the corresponding position. The dotted lines represent the open position of .the door and the corresponing position of the We1ght, will oe noted that by reason of the faot that the arms project inwardly, 01. rearwardly,
substantially at ri ht angles tothe door, the
The improved device is sinipie, niay be cheaply constrgcted, and is throughly ef. fective for its purpose.
Itshould be added tliat the counterbal anceweight 11 may be shiftectso as to vary 10' the counterbalancing action by locating the pin 10 in one or another of the perfortions 9, eccording t0 requirements. Thus, the
lines in Fig. 2.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for.clearness of understanding only, and no unncessary limitati0ns should be understood therefrom, but the appended 25 claims should be construed as bioadly as permissible, in view of the priorart.
- What I regerd as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
. 1. In combination, a'n even provided at its sides with air flues a.nd ha'v1g a. front frame, en oven-door, arms rigidly secured to the lower corners of the oven-door and extendin inwardly through the door opening, and aving their inner end portions ofl:'- set laterelly and disposed in said air flues, pintles connecting said front frame with said arms adjacent their' pointe of attchment to the door, and a weight carried by a link suspended from the offset portio of one of said arms.
2. In combination, 2m oven-door oomprising an Outer plat and an inner Plate,
pivot arms dsposed at the lower corners of the oven-door and equipped with heads confined between said plates, said ar ms being provided adjacent the inner late with pivot perforatons and hwing o?set extremities, en oven provided with 1ateral fluesand with a front frame ao'rdi1ig adoor-opening throu'gh which said arms extnd, the offset extremities of said arms being disposed in said flues, Pintles supported by sa1d frame and extendmg int said ivot perforations,
and weights adjustably hnked to the ofset extrmit1es of said arms and depending freely therefrom.
JOHN J. TOOMEY.
