TWIN-MOTOR FLYING MACHINE.

To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CLAUDE DonNIER, a citizen of the `German Empire, residing 'at Friedrichshafenon-the-Bodensee, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Twin-Motor Flying Machines (for which I have filed application 1n Germany, July 29th, 1918), of which the following is a specification.
My invention refers to flying machines and more especially to such machines as carry two motors.
If the motor foundation is built up on the forward part of the hull, the interior of the latter, 'besides serving to carry the `fue-l tanks, can according to my invention, also be utilized for the accommodation of the bomb dropping plant, no matter whether the flying-machine is a multiple-plane or monoplane. In order not to be obliged, in the latter case, to make the motor foundation too high, the hull is formed with a gap for the rear propeller to work in. A pressure propeller is arranged in the front portion thus formed, lwhilst the driver or drivers of the flying-machine is or are accommodated 1n the center or in the rear portion of the hull. This arrangement is particularly suitable for metal flying-machines. y
In the drawings attached to this specification and forming part thereof a flying-machine embodying my invention is illustrated in a purely diagrammatical manner. In the drawings- Fig. Il is a side elevation, partly in section, whilst Fig. 2 is a plan view and Fig. 3 a front elevation, partly in sectlon.
The hull A of the flying machine is subdivided by a gap a extending across the width `of the hull, into a forward part A and a frear part A. The forward part A bearsa head-piece B joined on by\ means of a hinge connection b1, which forms a joint engine casing for two motors C and C. The two motors are arranged tandem fashion close to one another in the plane of symmetry of the dying-machine. Their crankvshafts are preferably connected by a clutch (not shown)l` l f The forward motor C operates a traction propeller D and the backward one a pressure propeller D.
The latter runs in the gap a1 of the hull which, if necessary, may be madeto form a real pit closed up on the sides by the sidewalls of the hull extending from the forward part to the rear part. The non-interf rupted sidewalls of thiJ hull could then be made correspondingly thinner, but the effect of the propeller would be less satisfactory on account of the air being'cut off laterally.
To the rear of the gap a larger space and still further back a smaller one are provided for the crew. Windows a2 and machine-gun breast-works a3 allow ofthe necessary view of the surroundings. underneath the engine casing, fuel tanks E and belowl these a bomb-dropping plant F F are provided. From the sides of the hull two lower supporting planes G issue forth, whilst an upper supporting plane H is braced by means of stays J against the lower ones and the hull.
In order to reduce the air resistance as much as possible the casin' B for the motors C and C is closed on a l sides and only provided with Ventilating o enings b2. The covering, however, could a so be dispensed with if one is prepared to put up with the increase in air resistance. In the example illustrated it is assumed that plates of' light metal are used for the covering and a framework of light metal ribs and ties for the frame of the hull.
