I desire to have it understood that'the that the present machine 'is'inounted, upon a a suitable table 1 and oomprises'a ima'chine frame of specialoil-tight construction hav- .ing' lflan e52, and?) for supportin and seef machine to the table. he main portionoffthe frame ispreferablyof hollow rectangular construction, closed at the affrontwall and a 5 sprovi ed with an opening 6 plate 7 attached thereto in any suitable I manner. This cover'plate 'isfprovi'ded with 'fhonqwprojecting ortion 8 within which operates a stop"1ever,. 0 f .swppi gig s adapted to be closed by means o tj alcove:
andG, the cover plate 7 being of similar form and adapted when closed to seal the opening "against Teakage of oil. The front wall 4 of the frame is provided with a boss 11 bored to receive a cylinder 12. The side wall 13.0f the frame is provided with a boss 14 for receiving one of the crankshaft bushings 15, the opposite side wall having a boss 100 for receiving the opposite crankshaft bushing 99. The frame is provided withinwardly projecting bosses 26 and 29 bored to receive bushings for supporting the crank shaft of the machine. Projecting from the front wall 4 is an overhanging arm 32 terminating inf a bearing 33. A'presser bar 183 reciprocates verticallyin a bushing .187 carried by the bearing 33, and a presser foot 188 is secured to the lower end of the presserbar. Above this bearing is a rectangular opening 34 through which the presser foot lifting member 180 operates. A needle bar 48 operates in the bearin member 33 and. is. provided with suitab e needle mechanism 51, the needle bar being operated by suitable mechanism described in my a ove mentioned application.
As shownin Fig. 8, the rear, wall 5 is inclined to the left of the perpendiculsn', an
7 advantage thereof being to assist in properly 16 has a rectangular opening 24 into which projects a laterally extend ng portion of the stop lever 118, this opening also affording a passage for the lubricant returning from the bushing of the crank shaft housed in the boss 100.1 The side wall 16 around the rectangular opening 24 is provided with asuitable boss forming a seat for a belt guard 22 which covers the-drive belt 23,
andthe clutch and pumpwheels 93 and 425.
Mounted in end bearings 15 and 99 of the 3 frame, and in suitable bearings in bosses 26 and 29 is a transversely extending crank shaft 63 havin a clutch wheel 93 provided with a suitable )elt groove over which passes Y belt 23 of the transmitter.
The power transmitter comprises in generalamain bracket 143 secured to'the bottom of the table in any suitable manner, the
I bracket having an j arm bored to receive a shaft 144. Upon this shaft is mounted a cone pulley 145 over which operates a belt 146 for transmitting power from any suit able line shaft to'the pulley. The belt 23 is driven by apulley'149 for operating the sewing machine. ,Suit able clutch mechanism for the pulleys 1'45 and 149 is provided which is controlled by means of a rod 156 connected to a floor treadle (not shown). A further detailed description of the power transmitter n 1eehanism is not deemed necessary herein since the same is fully described in my copending application.
Referring particularly to Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 a four motion feeding mechanism c0- acting with the presser foot is provided for feeding the work through the machine. This feeding mecbanism embodies self lockmg adjusting means for regulating the length of stitch or the throw of the feed dog. such regulation being accomplished by an adjusting instrument, preferably as herein shown in the form of a keywrcnch, there: by to prevent unauthorized persons from changing the length of' stit-ch. Such adjust ing means may preferably be so constructed as to be; manipulated only by a special instrument, thus rendering it a simple matter to change the length of stitch'merely by turning the adjusting means one way or the other to the desired position, as indicated by a gauge registering the length of stitch required. V
j The feed mechanism comprises a feed dog 208 which may be of any preferred form to suit the character of work. The shank 209 of the feed'dog is slotted at 210 to receive a forward attaching screw 217,
and also has an open ended slot 211 to receive the rear attaching screw 218; The attaching screws are tapped into-the forward end 212 of the feed bar generally indicated at 213. The bottom surface of the feed dog is cut away at an angle at each side of the center line 214, to give free space at 215 and 216 to permit the feed dogto be tilted so that the toe of the feed dog will engage the work in advanceof the heel or vice versa, or to permit the feed to be eveled. These adjustments are obtained by adjusting the attaching screws as desired, as for instance, if the screw 217 is loosened and the'screw 218 is tightened, the'toe of the feed will "be tilted upward. If this adjustment is reversed t e toe will be tilted downward, and the heel will engage the work first. V
By virtue of such adjustment the -w0rk may either'b'e gathered or stretched, or fed out smoothly without either gathering or stretching Furthermore after a predetermined adjustment of the feed has been made, the feed may be removed at any time without destroying or disturbing such adjustmentby mere y removing the forward screw 217 without disturbing the rear screw '218, and withdrawing the feed dog 208 from embracing the bar and supported by astud screw 219. The yoke is connected to the feed bar 213 by a bolt 221 havinga shoulder 222 operating in one side of the link, while a nut 223 aving a shoulder 224 operates in the opposite side of the link 220. v
The feed bar is bored to receive an eccentric bushing 225, which is clamped. between the inside faces of the yoke link by the bolt 221 and nut 223. The shoulder 224 of this nut is tapped to receive the thread portion 226 of the bolt, while the body 228 of the bolt fits freely into the eccentricbushing. The shoulder 222 of the bolt and the shoulder 224 of the nut 223 clamp the bushing securely to the bolt and to the side walls .of the link 220, permitting the feed bar 213 to rock on the eccentriebu'shing, It will be seen that the construction is such that the height of the feed dog may l1e adjusted relative to the throat plate merely by turning the eccentric 225. The cylinder12 is provided with an aperture 229 in each side wall through which maybe inserted screw drivers to engage the heads of the bolt 221 and the nut 223, and by loosening the nut and turning the bolt the eccentric will be turned with it so as to raise or lower the feed dog to, the desiredheight. The'ad: justment is locked by holding the bolt with one screw driver and tighteningthe nut with another. Four-motion movements are transmitted to the feed bar by the ball crank 69 of thecrank shaftoperatin in the bearing 230 of the feed lever 231. he rear end 2320f the feed bar 213 is connected to the feed lever 231 by means of a joint pin 233 secured in the feed lever 231. The feed lever has a wall of a slideway in which operates a slide block 235. This slide blockis supported by ands lides 0n a stud screw 236 carried by arms 237 and 238 of an adjusting yoke 239 adjustablymounted on a vertical post 211) secured in the machine frame at 241 and 2 42. The post 240 is preferably tubular and the lower end is provided with a flattened guide piece 243 secured inthe tube by a pin 244, and'proj'ecting downwardly into a slot,
245 of the rear end 232 of the feed bar and preventing lateral movement thereof. The forward end of the feed bar-.213 is guided against lateral movement by the side walls 246 of the slot 247 formed in theiend bearin 248. A
The adjusting yoke 239 is slotted at 219 to receive a key nut 250 provided,.with a flange 251 secured to the yoke by screws 252. The inner portion of thekey nut is screw threaded to engage the left hand threads 254 on the lower end of a vertical screw 255-, the upper end of whichgis provided with right hand threads 256 engaging corresponding threads in the post as at 257. The upper end of the screw 255is provided with a flattened key .258 to. receives key wrench 260 for turning the screw, the upper end'of the post being bored 2112259 to receive the feed, lever 231 t 'ereby imparting increased movementto the feed bar 213 and tothe ,ifeed dog 208. 'Adjustment in the opposite direction decreases'the longitudinal movement of the feed dog'due to the fact that as the slide block 2351s moved downwardly in the guideway an increasingly restricted lateral movement is imparted to the feed bar 213 by the feed lever 231 operating on the adjustable fulcrum formed by the rocking slide block 235. An adjustable collar 262 is mounted on the post 255 above the yoke 239 to limit the upward' movement o' the yoke when adjusted at the proper point. The machine casting is provided with a projecting portion 263 against which the yoke may engage, thereby limiting the downward movement thereof. From this construction therefore it will be'seen' thatthe necessity of any locking device for locking the adj usting meansin adjusted position is obviated as the adjustment cannot change of itself. The stops 262 and 263 limit'the'feed dog movement in order to prevent it from striking either end ofthe feed slots in the throat plate. The key wrench 260 isprovid'ed with a scale of graduations 260 representing or indicating predetermined lengths of stitches or movements of feed, and such graduations register with an indicator 264 which aligns with the body of the key wrench when it is in positionfor adjusting the feed. Thus the 'key wrench and cooperating'parts constitute not .only a means of accurate and minute adjustment of the length of stitch or movement of feed but also amicrometer gauge for measuring-accurately to fractionsv of an inch the lengthof stitch at any time. It is merely necessary to insert thekey wrench in position andthe indicator will point to thejproper graduation representing the exact length of stitch.
Fromthe foregoing it will be seen that the length of stitch can be changed while the machine is in operation, and that by means of the right and left hand threads; on adjust-ingscrew 255 the latter will'after each adj ustment be effectually locked against disturbance and can not turn of itself on account of the vibration of the machine, This screw 255 is therefore self-locking and can be turned only by insertingthe key wrench through the opening at the top of the tube or post 240. It will be noted that by virtue of the engagement of the upper set of threads of the screw with threads 257 at the upper end of tube 240 the screw when rotated will. shift endwise. Thus if the pitch of the thread on the screw is inch the fulcrum will be shifted inch upon each rotation of the screw.
The hollow rectangular frame of the machine forms a fluid-tight oil chamber within which is located mechanism driven from the crank shaft for automatically lubricating the various operating parts, as described in my above mentioned co-pending application. It will be particularly noted that the entire mechanism for adjusting the length of stitch is housed within thiscompartment or hollow frame, as shown in-Fig. 6, and that there are no openings in the frame through which lubricant can escape. V
This is highly im ortant in a machine that is automatically ubricated since the oil will escape through any opening at the sides or top of the oil chamber. This fulcrum adjustin mechanism is entirely encased within t e rectangular frame out of sight, and nothing appears on the outside of the machine to suggest such an adjustment. This is also important because the-type of machine in which it is used requires that the stitch be changed only by an authorized person'such as the foreman,- and not by the operator.
From the foregoing construction of the machine frame it will be noted that this frame forms a reservoir having the four sides and the bottom integral, and when the rear cover plate 7 and the belt guard 22 are applied, the entire structure is closed and is sealed against any possible leakage of oil. It is further to. be noted that the feed mechanism, the adjusting mechanism therefor, and the locking mechanism are housed within the machine frame, and at the same time, the construction is such that the adjustment of the feed mechanism may be obtained not a only during the operation of the machine,
but Without permitting the leakage of oil.
As hereinbefore stated, the machine frame forms an oil reservoir, and automatic lubri cating mechanism is provided for the various bearings of the machine. Adjacent to the bottom 90f the frame and located in the side wall 16 is an inwardly projecting boss 30 bored to receive a pump casing 31, (see 1 Figs. 7 and 8). A pump belt wheel 425 is carried by a shaft 426 at the endof which is attached a small gear 427 meshing with a similar gear 428 carried by a shaft 429. These gears operate in a suitable recess of to the pump casing thereby covering the.
gears, and the casing is made air tight by means of packing 434.
The plate; 432 is gears and forced up thru a pipe 435' to a reservoir 439 provided with a top cover plate 447. V The oil is delivered from the reservoir 439 through outlet tubes 451,452, 453, and 454, each of which having its delivering end located to deliver oil therefrom to the respective bearings. The tube 454 conducts oil to the funnel-455 carried by a horizontal tube 456, the end 457 directing lubricant to the bushing 15, and the opposite end 458 directing lubricant to the bushing 101. The tube 451 supplies the intermediate bearings ofthe crank shaft 63. The tube 452 sup-- plies the crank 67 and other mechanism such as the 'looper actuating mechanism. The tube 453 supplies the crank 69 and the feed ing mechanism with lubricant. Portions of the lubricant thrown from the cranks 67 and 69 are caught by the plate 459 secured to the cover plate 7 which has a tapered extension termmating in a spout end 461, for delivering oil directly to the reservoir 125 of the stop lever 118, this supplying the oil buffer 124 of the stop lever. The oil buffer is connected with the reservoir 125 by holes 124*. The lubricant is directed through the crank shaft,-and the escaping lubricant is caught in a separate receptacle 469, thence passing through the outlet 470 into the interior of the machine. I
Some of the oil which escapes to the belt wheel 93 is thrown off from this wheel and caught inside the belt wheel guard 22 by receptacles 469 and 472, the latter receptacle having an outlet 473 into the interior reservoir of the machine frame. It is noted that the outlet tubes 470 and 473 project through the rectangular opening'24 in the side Wall of the machine frame. The pump is operated by means ofa pulley wheel 425 which is operated from the drive belt 23.
A further detailed description of the lubricating mechanism is not herein deemed necessary since the same is fully described in .my c'o-pending application, Serial No. 678,-
I provided with an inletfor the lubricant which is drawnin by the the feed mechanism from the outside without leakage of oil, and without stopping the operation of the machine.
It is to be understood that by describing in detail herein any particular form, structure or arrangement, it is'not intended to limit the invention. beyond the terms of the several claims or the requiren'icnts of the prior art.
