HENRY ROGERS, OF EUREKA, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO HIRAM ALLEN HASKINS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKlNG-LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,130, dated December 22, 1874 application filed September 26, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Rocnns, of Eureka, in the county of Humboldt and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Lock, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side view, partly in section, on line 0 0, Fig. 2, of my improved lock; Fig. 2, an edge view of the same, and Fig. 3 a detail side view of the eccentric.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A represents the main bolt, which is withdrawn by the door-knob B and a connecting-hub, and acted upon by band or spiral spring 0 for carrying it in forward direction. An eccentric, D, is pivoted near the rear end of bolt A, between the face-plates of the lock, and provided with a key-hole recess, a, of any suitable shape, for the purpose of swinging the eccentric D from one side to the other. The extreme positions of eccentric D are defined by projecting lugs 12 of the faceplate, the position on the rearmost lug admitting the free working of the-main bolt for opening and closing the door, while the position of the eccentric on the front lug brings it in contact with the rear end of the main bolt, so as to retain the same in closed position, and prevent effectually the throwing back of the same.
The eccentric may be opened from the inside and outside with the key by providing the key-recesses at both sides thereof, or from the outside by a key, and from the inside by a knob, as indicated in Fig. 2.
The simple throwing over of the eccentric from one side to the other releases or looks the main bolt, which is still further secured, Without any possibility of being tampered with from the outside, by the knob-bolt, E, which slides in slot d of the inner face-plate, and enters a recess, (1, of the eccentric D, when the same is thrown into position for locking the main bolt. The eccentric is rigidly held in position against the main bolt by the knob-bolt, and the main bolt securely retained in closed position, to be only opened by the withdrawing of knob-bolt and the turn ing back of the eccentric.
The lock may be used as mortise-lock for doors, or in smaller sizes for various applications in the trades, recommending itself on account of its compactness, durability, and efliciency.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the pivoted eccen-' tric D, having recess (1, of sliding knob-bolt E, for securing rigidly the eccentric in locked position on. the main bolt, substantially as specified.
HENRY ROGERS.
