Description

UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
G. R. MCILROY, OF OAKDALE, INDIANA.
. PORTABLE FENCE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,812, dated September 30, 1856.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, G. R. MoILRoY, of Oakdale, in the county of Jennings and State of Indiana, have invented -a new and Improved Mode of Constructing Portable Hillside-F ences; and I do hereby declare that the Jfollowing is a full and exact description, so as to enable others to make and use my invention, to wit.
The nature of my invention is to construct the fence in the usual way by boards or rails of convenient width and length, eX- cept that one or more of the bars or rails recede at one end of the panel and project at the other a sufficient length to insert into the next and secure the same by means of a pin or wedge, thus connecting the panels or sections without a separate or adjustable link. The panels are suspended or supported by the projection of either the second, third, or Yfourth rail or bar at both ends of each panel a sufficient length to rest on a bar or on two braces connected at b0ttom by means of a board instead of a post, so as to allow the bottom of the panel to move sidewise suiiiciently to adjust it in a perpendicular position on ground of any inclination and securing it in that position by means of a pin or wedge passing through between the two end battens of each panel and at the same time through one of the holes in the base or cross board connecting the bottom of the braces on which the fence rests, which holes are placed in a circle con responding to that which the panel describes by moving it sidewise at the bottom, thus doing away on hillsides or uneven ground with the necessity of digging away and leveling the ground on which the bar or braces stand.
IVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The supporting the panels on the top of the bars or braces in the manner described so as to allow of their being moved sidewise at the bottom sufficient to bring them into a perpendicular position on uneven ground and securing the same by means of pins or wedges passing between the end battens of each panel immediately above the bottom rail or board through one of a number of holes in the bar or cross board at the bottom of the bar, which holes are placed in a circle corresponding to that which the. bottom of the panel describes by moving .it
sidewise.
