T. R. ARDEN TOY TAMBOURINE Filed July 30, 1924 INVENTOR Ji M Patented Apr. 13, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS RAYMOND ARDEN, OF BELLMORE, NEXV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO JULIUS CHEIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOY TAMBOURINE.
Application filed July 30, 1924. Serial No. 729,057.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, THOMAS RAYMOND.
ARDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellmore, Nassau County, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Tambourines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in toy tambourines and an object of my in- 1 vention is to provide a simple, convenient and useful device of the character described; another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described in which the jingles are held in position without the use of pins.
I accomplish these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a horizontal section of this 2 device and I Figure 2 is a detail showing my improved retaining lug and jingles.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My improved device is preferably used in tambourines of sheet metal construction.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a sheet metal tambourine having a shell 2 and a head 3.
In the shell 2 are provided a plurality of seats 4 for the jingles 5.
These seats 4: are each provided with a cut out section 6 adjacent one corner and a tooth 7 also adjacent thereto.
The jingles 5 are preferably corrugated so that they will not lie flat upon each other and have two diametrically opposed cut out sections 5 and 5 respectively.
The diametrical measurement of each jin- 40 gle 5 from the inner end of its out out sections 5 or 5 to its opposite periphery is slightly less than the distance from the extreme depth of the out out section 6 to the opposite corner of the seat 4.
The tooth 7 when in its normal vertical position extends into a line drawn between these two points.
For the purpose of inserting the jinglcs 5 in the seats at, the tooth 7 is bent over.
The jingles 5 may then be inserted in pairs in the seats .4. by bringing the cut out section 5 of the jingles 5 over the. wall of the shell 2 at the corner of the seat 4 diagonally oppositethe cut out sect-ion ,6, and then bringing the cut out section 5 of the jingle 5 down over the wall of the shell 2. The tooth 7 is then bent up to its normal vertical position and will in this position prevent the displacement of the jingles 5 from the seat 4;. It will thus be found that the jingles 5 will be retained in the seats 4 and that the jingles 5 in each seat are free to strike against each other to produce sound.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a device of the character described the combination of a tambourine body and a jingle having a cut out section by which it is held in the tambourine body.
2. The combination of a tambourine body, a jingle seat therein, a jingle having diametrically opposed out out sections loosely engaging the sides of the seat whereby it is held in the seat.
3. The combination of a tan'lbourine body, a jingle seat therein, a jingle having dia metrically opposed cut out sections tohold the jingle in the tambourine body and a tooth on said body to prevent the removal of the jingle.
4. The combination of a tambourine body having a jingle seat means to hold a jingle in said seat and means to lock said jingle therein.
In testimony whereof I, have signed my name to this specification this 24 day of June, 1924.
THOMAS RAYMOND ARDEN.
