OSCAR M. LEICI-I, OF GENOA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO LEICI-I ELECTRIC CO., OF GENOA, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
RECEIVER.
Application filed June 12, 1922. Serial No. 567,703.
fo all whom it may concer/n:
Be it known that I, OSCAR M. Leren, a citizen of the United States, residing at Genoa, in the county of De Kalb and State ,i bf Illinois, have invented a certain new :and useful Improvement in Receivers, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact desciiption, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of 2.a this specification.
My invention relates to receivers. aud more particularly to a receiver of high etliciency particularly adapted for use in radio apparatus. I
-"i It is a purpose of the invention to provide a receiverhaving a permanent magnet therein for tensioning the diaphragm, which is of the type generally known as a horseshoe magnet, or one that has a portion thereof at the ends of said magnet, which produces a magnet of much greater strength and permanency than where a closed magnet, such as a circular. or ring-like magnet, is provided, duc to its open ends and greater length. A saving of material is also accomplished in making the same due to this construction.
It is a further purpose of the invention to provide a telephone receiver of the above mentioned character wherein the one pole of said magnet is connected with a diaphragm support and the other pole thereof is connected with a core for a centrally located electromagnet, whereby a single air gap is provided for said magnet, thus greatly increasing the effect produced on the diaphragm both by the permanent magnet and by the electromagnet. This is particularly true due to the fact that the electromagnet is acting on the diaphragm near the center thereof where the greatest amount of flexure can be produced. y
It is a further purpose of the invention to provide means for preventing the devices mounted in the receiver from turning relative to the casing when the4 saine are in position therein, and to prevent injury of the conductors leading to said receiver by any sharp edges at the opening through the casing by striking the material at said opening inwardly so as to form a curved'slioulder which is engaged by the conductors, so as to prevent injury thereto at said opening, said inwardly struck portion being adapted to enter a suitable recess the per.
marient magnet or any other suitable portion of the interior structure of the receiver to prevent turning thereof within the casing or shell. v
It is still a further purpose to provide a new and improved manner for securing the end disks of a'coil in position relative to a suitable core provided therein, and to provide new and improved means for accomp-lishing this purpose. Preferably the end members of the spool of the coil are held in position by upsetting projections on the core for the purpose of holding said disks in place, said projections being formed by a suitable die, which also moves the end members or ydisks of the spool into position simultaneously with the lug forming opeiation thereof. The lugs are formed from the core of the spool by a plurality of cutters or teeth which are provided in a central opening in thel head or die that moves the end members of the spool into proper position, said cutters each cutting a groove in the core extending axially thereof and causing the material from said groo-ve to be piled up adjacent the end members so as to simultaneously hold the same from movement outwardly on said core. j
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description of the accompanying drawings proceeds. However, I desire ktohave it distinctly understood that I do not intend to limit myself to the exact details shown or described, but that l intend to include as part of my invention all such obvious changes and modiiications of parts as would occur to a person skilled in this art, andas would fall within the scope of the claims.
In the drawings: 1
Fig. l is a top plan view of my improved receiver with the cap removed;
Fig. 2 is a section thereof taken adjacent the bottom of the receiver;
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the receiver;
Fig. 4f. is a view partly in cross section and partly in elevation of my improved spool showing the same somewhat enlarged so as te make the internal structure thereof clear;
Fig. 5 is an end view of said spool; and
Fig. 6 is a face view of the die used for forcing the disks on the core and forming the projections on the core Qi holding the disks in position.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the improved receiver comprises a easing having` a, body portion 10 and a cap 11, said cap 11 being screwthreaded to the body portion as shown at12 and being provided with an opening 13 as is customary. lvlounted in the body portion 10 of the telephone receiver a permanent magnet 14 which is arcuate in form, and which is provided with the opposite poles thereof at opposite ends of the same. A suitable member 15 of magnetic material is secured to one oi' the poles of said magnet and is provided with an inwardly extending arm 16 having an opening 17 therein for receiving the screw 1S which is adapted to enter the core 19 of the electromagnet 20, the ends of the windings ot' which are connected with the leads 21 and 22 through the binding posts 23 and 24 provided on the members 25, which are mounted between the layers 26 and 27 of insulating material, so as to prevent the ourrents which pass through said conductors 2l and 22 from passing through the permanent magnet 14. A supporting ring 2S is lprovided for the diaphragm 29. Said support-ing ring 28 extends between the cap and body portion and is clamped firmly in position therebetween. The said ring is made of magnetic material and is connected with the permanent magnet by means ot the brass screws 80, said screws passing through the insulating material 26 and 27 and through 'the members 25 which carry he binding post members 23 and 2i l'or the ends ot the conductors 21 and 22. In view of the fact that the screws 30 are brass these will not conduct the magnetism from the permanent magnet to the supporting ring for the diaphragm 29. However, the screw 31 which extends through the ear 32 on said ring 29 is ineterably of iron and clamps the sleeve or other spacing member 33 of iron between the permanent magnet 14; and the ring 28, thus providing a magnetic conductor between the ring and the permanent magnet at the pole at one end thereof. rllhe screws 30 and 31 may be provided with .suitable nuts 34 if' desired.
It will also be seen from Fig. 1 that ears 3.3 are provided 'for receiving the screws 30 i u the ring 2S. Upon reference to Fig. 3 it will be seen that where the conductors 21 :1nd pass through the opening` 36 in the body portion 1() of the receiver. the material at the openingT is struck inwardly as shown at 37 to provide a rounded surface on the inner side thereof adjacent said opening for engagement with the conductors 21 and 22,
and that said material extends inwardly to form a bead or projection on the inner side of the casing which is adapted to extend into the recess 38 in the permanent magnet 14, said permanent magnet being'understood to be made up of a plurality of laininations,
as clearly shown in Fig. 3, each of which is stamped out so as to leave the recess 38. Due to the fact that the inwardly struck material 37 enters the recess 38, rotation oi the permanent magnet and the parts connected therewith relative to the casing is prevented. As the conductors 21 and 22 are secured to the binding post mounted rigidly relative to the permanent magnet, this construction will prevent a pull on and kinking of the conductors at the opening The spool for the electromagnet 2O comprises the core 19, as previously described, and the end members in the form of washers or disks of insulating material 39 and LiO. Said washers or disks 39 and 40 are secured to the core 19 by being forced thereon by means of a suitable die 41 having an opening Li2 therein to accommodate the core 19. However, inwardly extending teeth 43 are provided on the die 11 extending into the opening 42, said teeth making cuts .44 in the material oi the core 19 and forcing certain portions thereof ahead of the teeth so as to form projections or lugs 45 adjacent the washers 39 and 40, so as to hold said washers or end members in assembled relation with respect to the core. A suitable coil is then wound between the members 39 and 40. li" desired, an additional layer of insulating material 4G may be provided between the .member 16 and the end member 40 to provide a tight lit between the member 16 and the member 40 when the screw 18 is turned into the screwthreaded opening 47 in the core 19.
Having thus described my invention, what .l desire to claim and secure by U. S. Letters Patent is:
1. In a receiver, a casing, a ring-like diaphragm support of magnetic material within said casing, a diaphragm thereon, an electro-magnet having acore, an arcuate horseshoe magnet extending parallel to said diaphragm, means magnetically connecting -said diaphragm support with one pole ot said magnet and a flat bracket of magnetic material connected with the other pele ot said magnet and with said core.
2. In a receiver, a casing having an opening therein through which conductors are adapted to pass, the material. at said opening being inwardly struck to form a rounded corner at said opening which said conductors are adapted to engage and ay member' in said casing having a recess, said inwardly struck material entering said recess to prevent rotation of said member in said casing.
In a receiver, a casing having an opening therein through which conductors are adapted to pass, and an inner portion within said casing to which said conductors aresecured, said inner portion having a portifjin lying adjacent said casing provided with a recess, andthe 'material at said opening besaid magnet having a recess therein and the material 'from said opening entering said recess, for the purpose described.
In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my naine this 3rd day of June A. D., 1922.
OSCAR M. Leren.
