Application filed March 21, 1922. Serial No. 545,598.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Lone REUTER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Thiensville, in the county of Ozaukee and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Timers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention pertains to ignition timers used in connection with internal combustion engines.
The primary object of the invention is to improve the construction and operation of such timers whereby greater power and efficiency of the engine is obtained.
A more specific object is to provide an auxiliary contact spaced from the primary contact, whereby two ignitions are obtained within the cylinder of the engine during the explosion stroke of the piston, thereby procuring complete ignition of the coinbustible charge,'thus increasing the power and efiiciency of the motor.
With these general objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed, it being understood that various embodiments of the invention are contemplated as within the appended claim.
The single figure illustrated in the drawing is an elevational view of a timer embodying the invention, with parts broken away and in section.
In the form of the invention depicted in the drawing, the usual commutator case is designated by the number 1, and it is obvious that this case forms what is substantially a cap covering the end of the timer shaft 2. This form of timer is of the conventional type in which the shaft 2 rotates continuously during operation of the motor while the commutator case is comparatively stationary with the exception of a slight oscillation to effect a retarding or advancing of the spark or ignition. The case 1 is provided interiorly with a fibre annulus 3, which carries a plurality of primary con tacts 4 provided with studs or terminals 4 projecting through the casing and insulated therefrom by'means of the washers 5.
Positioned between the primary contacts 4t and spaced apart therefrom are a plurality of auxiliary contact members 6 which are of shorter length than the contacts 4. The latter contacts are of similar construction to the primary contacts and are provided with studs 6, also projecting through the casing and insulated therefrom.
The rotor element is of a conventional type and consists of a sleeve 7 secured to the shaft 2 and provided with ears 8 in which is pivoted a lever 9, one end of which is yieldably connected to the sleeve by means of a coil spring 10, while theother end carries a roller 11 adapted to engage the contact members i and 6.
In the operation of the invention the wires from the cylinders of the engine are connected to the terminals 4- and as the roller ll rotates on the fibre annulus and engages the contacts at, the circuits are completed and ignition takes place within the cylinders. The foregoing operation is old. in many types of timers at the present time, and forms no particular part of my invention, except in the combination as hereinafter claimed.
As disclosed in the drawing, the roller 11 rotates in a clockwise direction. Therefore, the auxiliary contacts 6 are operably connected to the preceding contacts 4: in any suitable manner, preferably by means of straps or wires 12, secured to the terminals 4 and 6' by means of nuts 13 threaded thereon.
Thus it will be seen that as the rotor element rotates in a clockwise direction the same engages the contacts 4 initially closing the circuit. As the rotor leaves the contact 4, the circuit is broken momentarily and again closed as the rotor engages the auxiliary contact 6, thus giving a subsequent ignition, which insures a complete combustion within the cylinder of the engine.
I claim The combination of a conventional low voltage timer having a casing, an insulating ring therein, a plurality of studs projecting through such casing and ring and having contacts on their inner ends, and a rotor adapted to travel around said ring and over said contacts, and a plurality of auxiliary studs projecting through said casing and ring and having contacts on their inner ends, an insulating bushing surrounding each of said studs and having an outer flange contacting With the outer face of the casing, and a plurality of connectors positioned exteriorly of said casing, said connectoi's joining an auxiliary stud to the immediately adjacent stud of the first mentioned studs said connectors being heldout of contact with said casing With said bushing; flanges.
