l? V. CHRISTIANSEN ADJUSTABLE PAD Filed Deo. 26, 1922 Patented Apr. Y(i, 1926.
f Application ined December' 26,1'19'2'2. serial No. 609,121.5
To all whom t magno-noem.'
' instance of 4anglemovable on pivots Bekv it known that I, PETER ViLHnLM CHRis'riANsnfN, a subject `of the King of Denmark, yand residentY of Copenhagen, iny the Kingdom of- Denmarlehave inventedv new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Pads, of which the tion.
the sanie time as itis adjustable in the height, remains closed in its sides in all positions.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 shows the adjusting mechanism of the pad, and j Fig. 2 a verticalA cut through the middle of the pad, on a larger scale. v v
The pad is mountedon two frames 2 and 3 being along the foresides hinged togetherv through hinges 1,. The frame 2 forms Vthe support of the pad, while. the cover 4 y.is placed on the upper frame 3. In the frames are lodged two slides 5 and 6, consisting for or 7. At each end of the 'slide 5 is turnably lodged a bar 8, which with its free end'can glide on theslide 6, and .at each end of the slide 6 a similar bar9 is turnably lodged, which with its free end slides on the slide 5. The bars 8 and 9V are in the middle coupled together in pairs by means of bolts 10, so that they form two At each end of the slide 6 is,
scissors. besides, on Ybolts 11 a` rack 12 turnably lodged. The racks 12, being together a little longer than the slide itself, and having oppositely directed teeth,.are held down by springs 13, placed about the bolts 11 and being lodged in the slide 6. Near the free ends of the bars 8 a movable bow 14 is placed, which is furnished with a cross-piece 15, and each grasps about one'of `the racks 12,50 that the teeth of the same by the `action of the spring 13 engage withthe crosspiece 15, which may be shaped as a bolt. The racks are movably coupledv together and, on the connecting-bolt 16,k furnished with a drag-rope 17, reachingout of the pad, for instance by going through the l upper frame.
At thel back-side of the cover 4 or 'on the top of the upper frame a strap 18 is placed. Between theV two back-sides( and the four shelter sides et the fremiies 2 and '3 .Covers following is a specifica-v Y f i v Y -k israised, and the scissors My invention relates to a pad, wh1ch, at
U-irons, and. being j 1l and are placed,` .gwliichu clo'sev'th'er pad, thus hiding the adjusting mechanism.
- VVh'en the'pad Vhas to bel-raised from,` itsA collapsed` position, in which the frames 2 and i 3 iare L' vresting on Y'each other, and the coversy 19fand-20 thus are folded-together, the strap 18 is lifted up, so that the slidev 6 8, 9 are shut more or less.- When the strap is dropped again, the pad'will be adjusted in a certain height, in whichit will be held by the engagement between the racks 12 andthe cross-pieces 15.
If the pad has been lifted to its highest position, the covers 19 and 20 will be stretched out. i
lVhen thereupon the pad has again to be loweredrmore or less, the engagement be- V tween the racks and the cross-pieces must be temporarily racks'V 12 ceases, the engagement between the broken off. This is eifectedby pulling the drag-rope 17, so that the racks racks and the cross-pieces 15 takes place v again, sothat the pad is fastened in a lowered position. y
The pad, whichl may be used as al common pad, and the lowerframe of which can be provided with straps for fastening inthe mattress or the bed, is especially useful for sick-beds and beds of hospitals, but it can also be solidly covered-in in "divans or mattresses. The upper and the lower frame can either be of the same breadthy or, as shown in the drawing, of,v different breadths, and the ladjusting mechanism may beused by movable flats, which have to be raised to Thus the adjusting mechanismfcan for instlncebe used by drawing-boards andthe li e.
Having thusl described my invention, I
claim: Y ,v
Inl adjustable vpads thevcombination of an upperframe, a transverse channeledy lower'frame, a channeled slide parallel to and held in different Vslanting positions ino slide turnably kmounted in the same frame; a
the first named slide and turnably mounted in the lower'frame; pairs of pivotally conneetedr cross-bars, one pair ateach end of the pad, in each '.pair one bar being pivotally iie mounted in the channel of the upper slide and having the lower end A,slidable in the channel of the lower slide, the second bar of each pair being pivotally mounted in the channel of the lower Slide, and having its upper en'd slidable in the channel of the upper slide; two racks, each pivotally connected respectively at its outer end' to an outer end of the upper slide and having oppositely directed teeth; springs for hold'- 'ing the said racks down; means for Connect ing the adjacent inner ends of the said racks; a drag rope for lifting the said racks against the action of the springs; bows placed near the slidable end of lthe bar s which are pivoted to the lower slide, eachof said bows enoirling an adjacent raekgerosspieces comiecting said bowsl to rsaid bars respectively, said cross-pieces engageable with the teeth of said racks, so that the upper frame. is held lifted as long as the said drag rope is left uninflueneed7 while it can be lowered by pulling the drag rope to lift'the racks Aont of engagement with the teeth of the crosspieoes to allow the pairs of crossbars to spread.
ln witness whereof I have hereunto Set my lia-nd.
PETER VILHELM CHRISTIANSEN.
