UNITED STATES 1,579,981 PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY C. WEISKITTEL, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOB TO A. WEISKITTEL dc SON 00., O1 BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, A CORPORATION OF'DELAWARE.
Burner.
Application filed September 22, 1925. Serial No. 57,8't8.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRr C. WEISKITTEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in cast iron bath tub with a hollow rim, which rim is closed throughout its entire len h, but open at an end whereby the core use in the casting of the rim can be removed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a. bath tub of the above character space between the tub and the wall, both at the top and at the end or side thereof.
A further. object of the invention is to provide a bath tub of the above character wherein the hollow rim along the edge of the tub extends across the wall flanges and is formed integral therewith. V
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed. I
In the drawings which show by way of i1- lustration one embodiment of the inven- Figu bodylng my improvements, said tubebemg constructed .so as to extend from one side wall of the bath room to the other side wall thereof; f
Figure 1" is a plan view of a slightly Fig. 2 is an end view of the tub shown in Fig.1;
Fig. .3 is a side view of a portion of the tub shown in Fig. 1, and
. Fig. 4.- is a sectional ofFig.1.
The invention is directed broadly to a cast metal bath tub, and preferably a cast-iron tub. The tub is provided with a hollow cast rim which is formed integral with the tub and cast at the same time the tub is cast.-
This hollow rim extends along one side of the tub, and when the ,tub is usedin the corn r of a ro m 1t extends areand and re 1 is a plan'view of a bath tub emview onthe liiie across the end of the tub; The walls of the hollow rim are of substantially the same thickness as the wall of the tub, and the wall on the under side of the rim extends around and is cast integral with the wall of the tub. At each end of the tub there is a wall 'flange when thetub is built in and extends from one wall of the bath room to the other, and also a side flange for the back of the tub. When, however, the tub is used in the corner of a room, then there is only a wall flange atone end and one side of the tub. This hollow rim along the side or end of the tub extends clear to the wall and is formed integral with the wall flange.
The invention will possibly be better understoodby a detail description of the embodiment of the invention set forth in the accompanying drawings.
The bathtub is indicated at 1 and is of the usual construction as far as the bottom, side and end walls are concerned, until the upper portion of the tub is reached. In Fig. 1 of the drawings, I have shown a cast irontub adapted to be used in a bath room for the built in tub. This tub extends from one side wall of the room to the other. The tub is provided with a hollow rim 2 along the front side thereof. This hollow rim is shown in cross section in Fig. 4 of the drawlngs, and consists of a top member 3, an upper member 4 and an underneath member .5. It is noted that the'walls of these three members as well as the side walls ofthe tuh indicated in Fig. 4, are all of substantially the same thickness. The underneath member in an edge on the rim which is more or less rough, and thus objectionable. In my present hollow rim there is no exposed roughedge, and the tub with its hollow rim closely resembles a solid porcelain tub. The hollow rim is notonly a greatadvantage in that it avoids this rough edge which is formed on'the usual cast iron tub, but it is also very light as compared with a rim;
formed of solid metal, but more than this, this hollow rim throughout the entlre extent thereof, is of substantially the same thick-- ness, and this enables a porcelain enamel coating to be applied tothe entire tub, inasmuch as the metal being of the same thickness can be uniformly heated. At the rear side of the tub, there is a short wall flange 9 which is adapted to contact with the wall of the bath room. In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 1, there is an end wall flange 10 at one end of the tub, and the end wall flange 11 at the other end of the tub.
4 fillet which causes t .a solid porcelain tub.
This is for a built in tub, where the tub extends from one side wall to the other of.
the bath room. The rim 2 extends the full length of the tub and the end walls 10 and 11, and this rim is formed integral with the vertical floor flanges 12, 12 which extend from the wall flange to the floor. This floor flange 12 is back from'the front edge of the tub, and the under member 5 of the hollow rim is carried under still farther so as to be formedintegral with the floor flange at the point 13. Here a ain, there is a curvedhe entire tub to resemble In Fig. 2 I have shown an end view of the tub, and itwill be clear from this view that this hollow rim extends to the extreme edge of the wall flange 11. The core used in the casting .of the tub can be read' removed through the open iid of the cast rim, or through both ends of thecast rim. In Fig. 1 of the drawings, where I have shown a tub adapted to fit in the" corner of a room, the hollow rim 2 along the side of the tub extends around and across the end of the tub asindicated at 14 Thei'e is,-'of-' course, a floor flange 15 at the'back side of over deep. This is due to thefact that the core can be used of any desired cross sectional area in the jormmg of the rim, and this core is not circular. Thus it is that the rim may be given the same appearance as used in connection with a solid porcelain tub. Furthermore, both the walls of the tub and the walls of the" rim may have a porcelain enameled coating applied thereto, so that the entire tub has the appearance of a solid porcelain tub.
It is obvious that minor changes in the integral therewith, said rim bein details of constructionand the arrangement of the from t e spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A cast metal bath tub having a hollow rim along one side thereof, said rim having the under face thereof extended around to and formed integral with the side wall of the tub, so that said rim is closed intermediate the ends thereof, said rim at at least one end thereof being open so that the core utilized in the casting of the rim can be readily removed.
2. A cast metal bath tub having an integral hollow rim along the'side thereof and an integral end flange at the end of the tub, said hollow rim being extended to the full width of the wall flange and formed integral therewith, said rim being open at its end and closed throughout the length thereof.
3. A cast metal bath tub having an integral hollow rim along the side thereof and an integral end flange at the end of the tub said hollow rim being extended to the fu width of the wall flange and formed open at its end and closed throu hout t e'length thereof, the thickness of t e metal forming 11y the hollow rim being substantially the same as the thickness of the metal forming the tub, whereby the entire cast tub can be coated with porcelain enamel.
- 4. A cast metal tub having a hollow rim extending along one side thereof, a horizontal wall flange along the end ofthe tub,
and a vertical floor flange extending from the horizontal flange to the floor, said wall flange and said floor flange bein formed integral with the tub, and said ho ow rim extending across both the end flange and floor flange and formed integral therewith, said rim being. open at Ellis ends and closed throughout the len h thereof. t z
5. A cast metal ath tub having a hollow rim extending along one side thereof,- a horizontal wall flange along theend of the tub, and -a vertical floor flange extending the horizontal flange to the floor, said wall flange and said floor flange being formed integralwith the tub and said hollow'rim extending across both the'end flange and floor flan e and formed integral therewith,
