Be it known thatI, WALTERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miami, in the county of Dade and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Glass Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to glass tube cutters and its principal object is to provide a glass cutter which may be adjusted to accurately cut a glass tube into any predetermined length.
A further object of the invention is to provide an adjustable hand tool of this character which can be quickly and readily set and operated to sever the glass at the desired point.
With the preceding and other objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, construction, arrangement of parts and opera tions, to be hereinafter specifically referred to, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevation of the device in use, the glass tube being shown in vertical section,

Referring to the drawings in detail wherein corresponding characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 designates a threaded stem or rod equipped with a handle 6 at its upper end. A tube 7 is vertically adjustable on this rod or stem 5. An annular nut 8 is threaded upon the rod or stem 5, and secured thereto by screw bolts 5 is a collar 6 having right angled disposed apertured ears 7 through which the screw bolts 5 pass as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. The tube 7 has its upper end flared outwardly as at 8 to be received by the collar 6 for a swiveled movement thereon, and also for a longitudinal movement with the nut 8 as will be apparent from examination of the drawing. A gage or supporting. element is designated as at 9, and this gage or supporting element 9 is GlICll'. lar and slidably mounted on thetube 7. A set screw 10 is threaded through a lateral ROY ANDERSON opening 11 in the gage or supporting element 9 and is adapted to bindinglyengage the tube 7 as shownin Figure 3. Thelower end of the rod orstem 5 is formed with an extension 12 upon its lowerend and projects below the lower end of the tube and pivoted to this extension 12is a normally angularly disposed arm 13 having a recess 14 in its upper end in which a rotatable glass cutting element 15 is journaled, the latter being adapted to contact with the inner face i of the glass tube and sever -the same as shown in Figure 1. In order to hold the arm in a position where the glass cutting element 15 will engage the tube with sufficient pressure as to sever the same a leaf spring 16 is carried by the lower end of the arm and has its lower end arranged to contact with the tube at a point diametrically opposite the point of engagement of the tube by the cutting element 1% In the use of the device the tube 7 is adjusted to the desired position and locked in this position by rotatin the nut 8 until it engages the upper end of the tube and also the element 9 is adjusted to the correct position and engaged upon the upper end of the tube. With these parts thus arranged the cutting element engages the tube while the leaf spring also engages the tube to correctly position the arm so that the cut ting element will be retained in cutting re lation. The handle 6 is then rotated to rotate the rod or stem 5 which causes the arm 13 to rotate within the tube and the cugting element caused to sever or cut the tu e. I
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, I desire tohave it understood that such changes may be made in the form, construe vtion, arrangement of parts and operations as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
What is claimed is 1. In a glass tube cutter, a threaded rod provided with a handle, a tube vertically adjustable thereon, a nut threaded on the rod and adapted to receive the tube to hold means for supporting the tube within a glass tube to be out. V
2. In a device of the character described comprising a threaded rod a graduated tube on the rod, means fort-aiding the tube'ifi adjusted position, a supportlng element adjustable on the tube and adapted to engage and rest upon the upper end of the glass tube to be cut, and cutting ineaiis carried by thelower end of the threaded rod 3. In a glass tube cutter, a threaded rod, a handle carried thereby, a graduated tube vertically adjustable on therod; a cireular member vertically adjustable on the tube and adaptedto rest upon the upper end of the tube being cut; an' e'riteiision on the lower end of the rod, a pivoted element carried by the extension and normally disposed an sngurer' position,- a leaf spring carried by the lower end of the pivoted eleand adapted to engage the glass tube being cut, and a rotatable glass cutting elemeet carried by the upper end of the pivot ed element.
