Be it known that I, `EDWARD J. MOELLER,
a citizen of the United States, and residingl at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented the new and usefulk Improvement in hint-Gastellating Mechanism, of which the following is l a specification; y
lThis invention relates to mechanism adapted more particularly for castellating nut blanks.
One of the objects of this invention is to develop a mechanism adapted to castellate a nut blank by punching operation.
Another object is to develop mechanism for castellating nut blanks which has a wide f tail description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

1 designates a base which is arranged'to be supported on the table-2y of any suitable punch press, the ram of this punch press being shown at 3. Thebase 1 may, however, be mounted on a sub-frame or sub-base on the punch pi'ess as illustrated in application Serial Number 362,340, filed March 1, 1920.

The. end face of the die elements 5 are beveled as shown in Fig. 4L so as toprovide sharp cutting edges and the base is slotted as'showu at S to provide for discarding of the punchings. j 1 v vGuided in vthebase is a punch'carrier 9' which is slotted to receive a punchl() of T form arranged to cooperate with the die elements, and this punch is retainedby a hardenedgib 11 projecting slightly'beyond the upper face of the punch carrier as shown in Figure 2 and which may be retained in position by a stirrup 12 and a set screwk 13. rlhe f ram?) of the punch is thus arranged to strike' the gib and transmit the blow to the punch through the gib. The punch carrier "rests upon a head 1-1 at the upper end of a strong spring 15 carried by aistirrup 16 suspended from the table 2 and providing an abutment connected to the spring. This spring is under tension and normally tends to hold the head 14 firmly against thebottoin ofthe base. `When, however, the ram 3 of the punch moves down, the spring will be com"- pressed while the spring will return the car` rier when the ram again rises.
Each die elementhas bearing thereon a set screw"17 threaded through a lug 18 on the baseand provided witha lock nut 19.
Accordingly, the inner or cutting edges of these die elements may be accurately adjusted. Moreover, these die elements as well as the punch may be bodily removed to permit repair, replacement and adjust-ment of the punch and Ldie mechanism'so as to out slots of different sizes. It is to be understood, ofy course, thaty the Vpunch carrier 9 may be readily removed, and that although the base of the punch itself is uniform the tip,v that is, that part cooperating vwith the. die elements, is ground to various thicknesses corresponding to the width of the slot. to `be cutjin' the nut blank. f The base isarianged to receive a cap 20, and this cap and base are machined to form a bearing fora carrier 21, which is flanged at 22 and is provided with a reduced portion 23 having a key way arranged to receive a key 24, this reduced portion being arranged to receive a ratchet 25 secured thereto by the key 24, and the extreme end of the reduced portion of the carrier beingthreaded to receive a collar 26 which Secures the ratchet in position on the carrier and seupon each .oscillation .of 'the cures the carrier in position in its bearings Mounted on the reduced portion oi the ratchet -isa fpawl carrier 27, Which .has a slotted arm 28 connected to an oscillating arm 29 which is oscillated by a cam on the rain 3, as shown in the application referred to, or in any other suitable manner. .The paWl carrier further has a lug 30 on which is pivoted a paivl v3l .which .teeth 32 Von the ratchet, there being in this case si); teeth on the ,ratchet corresponding tothe six faces of ,a henagon nut.

The holder has at its end: a shoulder bearing against la frame t0 on its carrier, While -both the carrier and .holder aie provided with key lWays arranged to receive a key 'l-l to secure them together. The holder .is retanedin .position by a clamping nut l2 and a lock .nut e3, .this lock nut being beveled at 44 to permit ready .entrance of a blank, and the 4nuts being' recessed as shown at to v.permitmanipulation by a suitable tool.

The operatorxvill nonT .depress the pedal of the punchpress causing a number .of operations. At each operation the punch will move outwardly and will cooperatewith the die so as to punch castellate the crown of the blank from the center thereof outwardly. Between the successive operations and as the punch is again in the center oi the blank, the rain, in rising, will move the paivl 3l to the lett, Figure Q, so as to cause ythe ,holder to be .moved through a predetermined angle corresponding to the angle of the nut to be Castella-ted. After the operations .have :been completed, the nut .is Withdrawn.
It will, therefore, be seen .that .this invern tion accomplishes l.its objects. The crown of the nut blank .is supported ez-iteriorlyby a stationary die with which coopera-tes an outward-ly moi/ring punch, and in view ot' the fact that che die as Krell .as Vthe .punch is external to the holder, not only .is .alirm support v.provided for accurate Work, ,but th e .die .and punch cle ments can =be ,accurately alined. pair yand replacementu ylor 'the punch, as Well as the die, and .the provision ,of .the removable and replaceable holder, together `with the adjustment and interchangeability.of the punch and die, .permits a .Wide range ot adjustment to `be attained, so as to .provide lor the castel-.lation .of nuts of different sizes.
lt is 4obvious that various changes .may rbc. niade in the details of .construction .without departing from the spirit of this invention.; it is .to be understood, therefore, that this invention is not to be limited to the specific construction shown and described.
HavingV thus described .this invention, what is claimed is:
l. ln a machine of the character describcd,.a die Aadapted to .externally engage a nut blank, a holder adapted to position the nut .rviith respect to .said die, a punch adapted to cooperate with said die to castellatethe blank, and .means for moving said holder rotatively in timed relation .to said punch.
