UNITED STATES I 1,579,770 PATENT OFFICE. I
HENRIETTA L. KELLY, orsAN'ros, BRAZIL,
BAG on GRIP CARRIER roe use ON AUTOMOBILES.
"A lication filed May 1,
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRIETTA L. KELLY,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the municipality of Santos, State of Sao Paulo, Republic of B'azil, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I or Grip Carriers for Use on Automobiles, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in removable bag or grip carriers for attach ment to the running boards of auton'iobiles a usual form of attachable bag or grip carrier PI'OVlSlOII is made to support the bag or grip or other luggage from the outside and the inside support is left tothe side of the vehicle itself. The result has been that the bag or grip has been carried in a loose fashion and that it would necessarily sway t0 and fro against the side of the car, with resulting damage to the enamel. Also, such carriers must provide higher exterior walls to prevent the bag or grip from falling out, and must thus be larger, more cumbersome and more expensive to manufacture. In my improved carrier I provide preferably corner holders which are separately attachable and removable, each of them having as well an inside support for the bag or grip, positioned adjustably to the outside corner support. The various parts of the carrier can readily be adjusted to the size of the bag or grip. WVhen proper adjustment of the outside and inside supports for the bag or V grip has been made, the latter is held firmly in its place and the grip can neither fall outwardly nor sway inwardly to damage the enamel on the side of the car.
My invention consists of the novel devices hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings and cletailed description I have set forth my invention in its preferred form. It'is to be understood that my invention is not limited to the preferred form shown but can be used in other ways without departing from the scope of my invention.
B f rr ug to the drawings, F gure -1 is 1924. Serial No. 710,384.
an illustration of an ordinary automobile.
having a bag or grip held on its running board by my improved carrier.
Figure 2 is an elevation view of part of my carrier, namely, one of the removable holders.
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation of the same, showing the holder attached to the running board of the car.
Figure 4 ma cross section of the holder.
In Figure I an automobile 1 is shown with in 1 ri 3 carrier holding; a 'ri 2 in re )Ql b .1 b place on the running board 8 of the car. The n) carrier consists. as shown of two CD I 1 removable holders at and i. The detailed construction of these holders is illustrated in Figures 2,3 and 4;. Each of the remow able holders 4 comprises an outside member The outside member is adapted to rest on the running board of the car and form one of the bases for holding the bag or grip. It is provided with a downwardly placed flange 6 which in turn has fixed to it a screw 7 The flange 6 and screw -7 form a means for clamping the outside member 5 firmly andsec-urely to the running board. The
An inside supporting member I 12, constructed with a horizontal portion 12 and an upturned support 13, is adapted to slide. in the channel formed in the member 5. The horizontaliportion 12 of the inside supporting member'is formed with horizontally and outwardly extending arms 1e and let. Between these two arms there is pivoted at their extreme outside ends a pawl 15. As previously stated, the inside supporting member is slidable in the channel in the outside member 5. The pawl 15 is adapted in co-operation with the. rack 17 to ermit the i idemember to slide tward,-
ice I 1y but to automatically limit its inward movement. The pawl15 is provided with a knob 16. This knob can be caught by the fingers and permits the pawl 15 to be raised and disengaged from the rack, thus permitting the inner support to slide free- 1y. The inside supporting member 12 at its inner end is likewise provided with horizontally extending arms 18 and 18, between which, at their outer ends, a lug 19 is freely pivoted. This lug, when the inside supporting member is extended inwardly beyond the end of the outside supporting member, serves as a support. This lug is pivoted freely and when the inside supporting member 12 slides entirely into the channel formed in the outside member 5 the lug 19 rotates to a horizontal position and likewise slides in the channel.
As can be seen from the foregoing, I have provided a very simple form of bag or grip carrier which, however, is extremely easy to attach and to remove and yet one which at the same time is adjustable to the size of the bag or grip and one which holds the bag 7 or grip firmly in place and prevents inward swaying against the side of a car. In this specification and in the claims, I have referred to outside member and inside member, and to movement outwardly and inwardly. In such connection, I have reference to outside or inside position with respect to the running board of the automobile, it being readily understood that the inside refers to the member so positioned relatively to the running board of the car, and outside refers to the member so positioned outwardly with respect to the same. i I have also referred tomy carrier as a bag or grip carrier. It is to be understood, oi course, that it is likewise suitable for carrying any other form of luggage.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a bag or grip carrier of the character described a removable holder comprising an outside supporting member, a channel and rack in the horizontal portion thereof, an inside supporting member slidable in said channel, and ratchet means co-operating with said rack fixed to the inside member at its outer end adapted to limit the inward movement of said member.
2. In a bag or grip carrier of the cha acter described a removable holder comprising an outside supporting member provided with a channel and rack in its horizontal portion, clamping means for said member, a movable inside supporting member adjustably positioned with respect to said outside member, ratchet means co-operating with said rack fixed to the inside member adapted to limit the inward movement of said inside member, and a yieldably supporting lug on the horizontal portion of said inside member approximate its inner end substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. A bag or grip carrier of the character described comprising a plurality of movable holders, each of said holders comprising an outside supporting member, a channel and rack in said member, an inside supporting member slidable on said outside member in said channel and ratchet means fixed to the inside member adapted, by cooperating with said rack to limit the iii- Yard movement of said member.
4. In a bag or grip carrier of the character described, a removable holder comprising an outside supporting member, clamping means attached thereto, a channel and rack in the horizontal portion of said member, an inside supporting member having its horizontal portion slidable in said channel and provided outwardly with an extension carrying a ratchet pawl adapted to be inwardly pivoted, said rack and ratchet pawl being adapted to permit outward movement to said inner supporting member but to limit when engaged the inward movement of same.
5. In a bag or grip carrier of the character described, a removable holder comprising an outside supporting member provided with a channel and rack an upstanding bracket on said member adapted to surround an exterior binding on the grip adapted to be held in said carrier, an inside supporting member slidable upon said outside member, and ratchet means adapted, by co-operating with said rack, to limit the inward movement of said inside member.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
RIETTA L. KELLY.
