This invention relatesto an apparatus for and a method of whipping cores with strand material, and more particularly. to an apparatus for and a method of whipping the ends of telephone cords preparatory to 'se.

, The object of the invention is to provide an improved apparatus forand a-methodfof whipping cores with strand material.
In accordance with the general features of the invention there is provided a .whipping finger which draws a wire guided from a supply source and Whips it about the end of a cord carried upon a support which is automatically moved back the desired distance'fo'r each turn of the wire whipped on V the cord. The whipping finger is equipped with a retractable pin. whereby a loop may 7 be formedin the end ofthe wire. A mech anism controlled through a leverage system is provided for retracting the pin as soon as the whipping operation commences. A v modifiedmechanism is also provided, for retracting the pin, which is controlled through the centrifugal forcecreated by the revolving Whipping finger. I
The drawings illustrate the improved method for whippingthe core and disclose .an, apparatus capable of. performing-the improved method, the major portion of which is more fully disclosed in co-pending application, SerialNo. 643,866, filed June 7 11923 byv I-I. H. C. Grondahl, which issued une 17, 1924. as No. 1,497,679.
It will be noted that in the structure disclosed in the above mentioned application the pin around .whichthe end of thestra'nd is looped is located on the cord support and.
that it is not retractable,whereas' the pin, around which the end of the strand is looped, disclosed herein is retractable and is located on the whipping means and not on the cord support.
Other objects and advantages offthe in- 'ventionwill more fully appear as the follow ing detailed description progresses, wherein f 'refere'nce is made to the accompanying drawngs which illustrate one embodiment'of the invention, and in which Fig. 1.1s a'fragnientary slde elevatlon of the, complete mechanism with a section 'of the cover removed;

A conductor or cord support 87 is provided with a V-shaped depression 135'in its top surface within which the end of the cord to be whipped is placedwith its end projecting a suitable distance into a U-shaped formation of the whipping finger 126. i

Passing through a hole 201' (Fig. 4) in V the block 200 which is integral with the whipping finger 126, isa pin v202, one end of which, is adapted to normally project into the U-shaped formation of the whipping finger. Secured to one end of the. pin 202 is a circular member 203' which is retained in thehole 201 by a pin 204: secured to the walls of the hole 201. Surrounding the in 202 and interposed between the member '03 anda portion of the finger denoted refer= ence character 205 is a normally compressed spring206 (Fig. 1). The surface of the outer end of the member 203 engages the top surface of a block 207, secured to a link 208, .which passes through a bearing 209 suitablysecured to a bench 10. The lower end of the link 208 engages one end 210 of a bell crank lever 211 pivoted at a point 212 to a bracket 213 secured to the bench 10. A roller 215 is secured to another end 214 of the lever 211.
Pivotally secured to a bracket 25, attached to the underside of the bench 10, is a lever 28, one end of which is connected to a suitable foott-readle or foot operating means (not shown) by a link 29. It will be noted that the lever 28 has been made longer than the one disclosed in the above noted appli cation in order toprovide-an arm 217 which is adaptedto actuate the lever 211. A spring 30, one end of which is secured to the bench and the other end of. which is secured to the lever 28, functions to return the lever 28 to its normal position after each. operation thereof.- The other end of the lever 28 has a beveled surface 216 which is adapted to engage the roller 215.
The apparatus for causing the whipping finger 126 to rotate and for moving the support 87 rearwardly is fully disclosed in the aforementioned co-pending application.
Thewire 11 1 after it has been withdrawn from the passage 132 is positioned, by forming or looping it around'the end portionof the pin 202 which projects upwardly into the U-shaped formation of the finger 126, and is then drawn over a knife edge 229; The cord is then placed in the depression 135 of the support 87 with its end projecting a suitable distance into the U-shaped formation of the whipping finger 126 over the looped end of the wire. While holding the cord in the position above. described the operator steps upon. the foot pedal (not shown) causing the link 29 to. draw one end of the lever 28 downwardly, causing the wire to be spirally whipped about both the core and the loop. By drawing one end of the lever 28 downwardly, the other travels upwardly,causing, its beveled portion 216 to engage the roller 215, pivoting the lever 211, and; drawing the link 208'downwardly. The link 208 in being drawn downwardly permits the, spring 206 to expand, forcing the member 203 and the pin 20 2 downwardly into their lowermost position, the end of the pin 202' being caused to be retracted completely out of the til-shaped formationof the finger.
After the whipping operation is com pleted the cord is removed from the support andthe wire 114 is severed therefrom; the whipped cord being shown in Fig. 6. The manner in which the wire is whipped about the core and the loop is readily apparent from the diagrammatic view shown in Fig. 7. The pin 202 is then returned to its nor mal position ready for another cord.
The structure shown in Fig. 5 discloses a modified form of a whipping finger for ac com-plishi-ng. the. same resultasabove described. It consists essentially of a pin 220, a portion of one end: of which projects into the Ushaped formation of the whipping finger 126, the other end of the pin being pivotally secured at a point 228 to a lever 221 intermediate the ends of the said lever. One end 222 of the lever 221 is pivoted to a portion 230' of the finger 126, and the other end of the lever is formed into a weight 223.
A spring 224 is secured at one end to a point 225 on the finger 126 and at its other end to a point 227 on the lever 221. l
The wire is looped around the end of the pin 220 in a similar manner to that described in connection with the above mentioned pin 202. The' cord is then laid in the support and the whipping mechanism is set in motion by the foot treadle. It is readily apparent that as soon as the finger, 126 begins to revolve, the weight through centrifugal force, will cause the lever 221 to pivot outwardly expanding the spring. 22 1 and causing pin 220 to be retracted out of the U-shaped' formation of the whipping finger.
Upon the completion of the whipping operation the finger 126 is automatically stopped in its original position, as is more fully described in the above noted appliea tion, and the spring. contracts, drawing the pin 220 back to its normal position. The cord is then. removed from the support and the wire is severed therefrom.
The pin around which the strand is looped is retracted so that any undue twisting of the strand is prevented and the strand is whipped spirally around the loop and the end of the cord.
What is claimed is 1. In a mechanism for whipping a core I with a strand means for whipping the strand around the core, and means carried by said whipping. means for cooperating with the strand to form a loop in the end of the strand in position to be lapped by the Y whipping portion of said strand.
2. In a mechanism for whipping a core with a strand, means including a finger for whipping the strand around the core, a support for the core, means carried by the finger for locating the end of the strand in position to be lapped by the whipping portion of said strand and means for causing a relative movement between the support and the finger to cause the strand to be wound about the core. 7
3.-In a mechanism for whipping a core with-a strand, rotatable means for whipping the strand around the core, means carried by said rotatable means designed to cooperate with the strand in forming a loop in the end of the strand, and centrifugal means for causing the said second mentioned means to become inoperative at the Start of the whipping operation. 4. A method of whipping a core with a strand, which consists in forming the end of the strand, bringingthe formed end-of the strand and the core into contact, and
thereafter whipping the core in such a man-i able means carried by said, whipping means ner that the formed end iscovered by th strand whipped around the core.-
5. A method of whipping a core with a strand, which consists in forming a loop in the end of the strand, bringing the loop and the core into contact, and thereafter whipping the core insuch a manner that the loop iscovered by the strand, thexends of the strand projecting from opposite ends of the whipping about the core. a
6. In a mechanism for whipping a core with a strand, means for whipping the strand about the core, means carried by said whipping means for-locating the strand end in position to be lapped by the whipping portion of said strand, and means for causing said strand to be whipped in spiral formation about the core.
7. In a mechanism for whipping'a core with a strand, means for whipping the strand about the core, and means carried by said whipping means for locating the strand end in proper position to be'lapped. by the whipping portion thereof.
8. In a mechanism for whipping a core with a strand, means for whipping a strand around a core, a support for the core, means carried by said whipping means for locating the strand end in position to be lapped by the whipping portion of said strand, and means for causing a' relative movement between the support and thewhipping means to cause the strand to be Whipped about the corea'nd strand end.
9. In a mechanism the strand around the core, and a retractdesigned to cooperate with the strand, in forming a loop in the end thereof imposition to be lapped by the whipping portion of said strand. 1 r i 10. In a mechanism for whipping the end of a core witha strand, means including a revolvable finger for whipping the Strand for whipping the end of acore with a strand, means for whipping around the core, a forming element carried by said finger, designed to cooperate with the strand end, and means for causing the forming element to be carried into an inoperative position upon the revolution of the finger.
