will be withdrawn from the notch 49 and the springs 46 will move the base die 43 upward. The upward movement of the base die is arrested by a disk onv the post 44, said disk being of larger diameter than the bore 45. Thus the base die can only raise to the height shown in Figure 3.
The die block 39 is provided with two channels 56 and 57 to the rear of the chamber 42. These channels are cut in the top of said die block and form slide-ways for two bars58 and 59. Two lateral plate dies 60 and 61 are slidably mounted on the top surface of the die block 39 and are secured respectively to the bars 58 and 59. These plate dies have operating edgesr62 and 63 which correspond in shape tothe end walls 47 of the chamber 42. The edges 62 and 63 intercept points 64 and 65 on the plate dies 60 and 61. Said pointed parts 64 and 65 are directly above pointed parts 66 and 67 of the die block 39. The upper surface of the plate dies 60 and 61 are preferably beveled or slightly rounded adjacent the edges 62 and 63 for a purpose hereinafter rendered obvious.
A lever 68 has a hub 69 which is pivot-ally mounted in a bore 70 in the die block 39, said here at its top communicating with the channels 56 and 57 The hub 69 has a cam 71 at its top located between the inner ends of the bars 58 and 59. The bars 58 and 59 have screws 72 and 73 secured thereto and said screws extend outward through slots 74 and 75. A coiled spring 7 6 has its opposite ends secured to the springs 72 and 73 and is operative to move the bars 58 and 59 toward each other and consequently move the lateral plate dies 60 and 61 toward each other when permitted to do so by the cam 71. Figure 2 of the drawings shows the lever 68 in such a position that the cam 71 will hold the plate dies 60 and 61 apart against the action of the spring 76. However, if the lever 68 is swung toward the right, the cam 71 will move into such position as to allow the spring 7 6 to move the plate dies 60 and 61 slightly toward each other. A plate 77 is secured to the top of the die block 39 and serves to limit the movement of said plate dies 60 and 61 toward each other and also serves as a cover for the top of the bore 70 and the cam 71.
The die 37 as clearly shown in Figures 1 and has rounded ends 78 adapted, when the plunger 30 moves downward, to enter the space between the end walls 47 of the chamber 42. Furthermore, said die 37 when moved downward will be operative to move said base die 43 downward as previously described, which action occurs during the application of a cover to a case as will be hereinafter specifically described. The die 37 has two fingers 79, the bottom surfaces 80 of which are positioned above the bottom surface 81 of the main body 82 of said die 37. These'fingers 79 are operative to assist in aflixing parts of the cover to the pocket of cludes an overlaying flange which provides a' pocket of well known formation in the manufacture of eye-glass cases. A coiled spring 141 has one end secured to the lid and the other end secured to a looped anchoring member 142 in the body 137; the hinge 139 being discontinued at the place where the spring extends into the body. Said case is of a well known construction and the arrangement of the spring presents the advantage of holding the lid open when the lid is moved into a certain position and also for holding the lid closed after the'lid has been moved past what is known as the dead center during the closing action. In Figure 5 we have shown a cover 143 in the form of a cut blank. This cover can be made of leather, imitation leather or processed cloth and the surface 144 is coated with glue capable of adhering to the surface of the case when heated and pressure is applied as will be more thoroughly comprehended in the following description.
In carrying out the covering operation of said case with theseries of dies above described, the operator, while the base die 43 is held down by the latch 50, places the body 137 of the case within the chamber 42 so that the bottom of said body rests upon the top of the base die 43 with the pocket140 of the case toward the rear. The lever is then swung to move the die 37 downward into the body of the case and since said die 37 is heated, the heat will be transferred to the body of the case. The latch 50 is then released by pressing the portion 53 of the lever 51 and the lever 33 is then swung to raisethe die 37; the springs 46 operating-to raise the base die 43 into the position shown in Figures 1 and 3. The operator then removes the heated case and places it on the blank cover in the position shown in Figure 5, the bottom of the body engaging the glued sur face of the cover blank. The cover and the case so positioned thereon is then placed upon the top of the base die 43 and the top die 37 is moved downward into the body portion in the same manner as previously described. This action will cause the side flaps 145 and tab portions 146 to be bent upward against the outer end surfaces 147 of the body 137, the end walls 47 of the cham-- ber 42 serving to press the parts 145 and 146 of the cover against the ends of the body l tand ing action of the cover across the bottom of the body low any wrinklesto eXist and the action will result in a smooth firm application of the covering material to the bottom and outer ends of the body .137. The latch'50 will automatically move into the notch the base die 43 in its lowered position. The
top die 37 is then raised and the lever 68 is v swung to allow the lateral platedies 60 and 61 tomove towardeach other and in so doing the edges 62 and 63 will bend the parts 1&6 inward over the top of the ends of the body- 137 into the position clearly downward into the body shown in Figure'G; the parts 146 being positioned over the top surface of the pocket i'lange'l lO while the, parts 145 extend-over the space between the pocket and the rearof the body. The top die 37 is again moved action the fingers '79 will press the parts 146 "into 'firm holding contact with the upper surfaceof the pocketflange MO and the ends 78 of the die 37 will press" the overhanging parts 145 into engagement with the inner surfaces of the ends of the body 137. r Fig ure 7 of the drawings showsthe. cover after I said latter part of the operation. The'case firmly to the, cases. I
form of glue or paste is'used which does not is then removed from the die- 13 and the remaining portions 148 and 150 of the cover canbe applied to the case flange 140 and lid 138 by means-not claimed in this application We have found that heating the die structure and using glue which when heated will adhere to the cases, the covers will hold However if any other be heated in order to adhere to require to then it will be understood that it the cases,
7 will be unnecessary to heat the dies.
