To all whom t mag/concem:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. voN HAM- MERSTEIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Los Angeles, in the county of 5 Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety Razors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to im rovements in l0 safety razors and more particu arly that type of razor having three edges, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a safety razor of the character described having three cutting edges in which novel means is employed for permitting the user to keep track of which of the cutting edges have been used and therefore which edges are fresh for use the next time the razor is used, and after the blade has been removed for cleaning.
A further object vof my invention is to provide a safety razor in which particularly novel mechanism is employed for holding the blade retaining member placed upon the razor so as to flex the guard sufficiently to turn the edge to the proper angle for shavm further object of myinvention is to provide a safety razor of the character described. in which novel means is employed for preventing the blade from turning or shifting laterally when the 'biade retaining member I is in positionu l A further objectof my invention is to provide a safety razor of the character described in which the bladeis so formed as to permitextreme exibility at those portionsl adjacent to the cutting edges, yet in which no possibility of splitting the blade is present, as in 'the case cf ordinary biades in which radial splits are provided to permit the flexing of the blade.
A further object of my invention is-to provide a safety razor of the character described which the guard is held substan tially rigid and in which the reenforcing members employed to establish rigidity do not in any way hinder the accumulation of iather upon `the guard.

Figure 6 is a top plan view of one of the blades. n Y In carrying out my invention I make use of a triangular shaped Ymember 1 having portions of the side walls knurled as shown in Figure 2 so as to afford a non-slip 'grip upon the handle. A triangular guard member 3 is'mounted at the upper end of the .handle 1 and is provided with reenforcing vbars 4 extending from a point adjacent to the outer corners of the guard to the triangular shaped member 1 for a short distance beneath the guard. This structure leaves the entire space beneath the bars 4 free and thus the surface of the guard is left unobstructed between the opposite ends of the work engaging edges so that lather may accumulate thereupon during the process of shaving and also so that the guard may be cleansed.
Additional reenforcing members are provided in rigidl cross piecesl 5 extending between each of the adjacent sides of the webs 4 to a point below the under surface of the guard 3 out of engagement with the side walls of the handle. An inscription is placed on each of the reenforcing .members 5 denoting numerals from 1 to 3 inclusive.
rllhe blade retaining member 6 (see Figure 4) is provided for retaining the exible blade 7 in engagement with the guard 3 whereby the blade will be held in an operative position for use.
rlihe member 6 is substantially triangular in contour and the upper surface is curved as shown at 8 so as to present a smooth area which will not irritate the esh of the per son using the razor as it is drawn over the face. The downwardly extending cylindrical lug 9 is centrally located on the under side of the retaining member 6 and is arranged to be received in a cylindrical socket 10 in the handle member 1 for the purpose of preventing lateral movement of the retaining member relative to the handle when placed thereon.
Three radially extending bosses' 11 are provided on the side wall ot the cylindrical lug 9 adjacent to the surface of the retain- The blade 7 has an aperture 12 there through which is similar in contour to the lug 9 adjacent to the under surface of the retaining member 6. Thus the blade is held against rotation when placed between the retaining member and the guard member 3.
This blade Z is of an especially novel structure and is shown in Figure 6u Three cutting edges a, b and c are provided. Legends indicating numerals from -1 to 3 are inscribed upon the bladel 7 in registration with the cutting edges a, Z), and c, respectively. This is for the purpose of permitting the readjustment of the handle member on the guard 3 in precisely the same position as it occupied when the razor was last' used so that the person using the razor may know which oit the edges have been used and which remain fresh tor future use. Obviously the blade l must be removed for cleansing and drying, and it no means ot identication or posltion were provided it would be impossible to lmovv which oit the edges have been used. 4
The corners ot the blade 7 are cut away, leaving an obtuse angle recess 13 at each corner so that the blade 'l' may be readily ned, i.. e., bent downwardly toward the worlr engaging edges ot the guard '3 in the manner shown in Figure 5,

The blade may be removed and dried, and re placed with the legends 1 and 2 in res'trao tion with the legends 1 and 2 on te re enforcing .members 5. @n taking up the razor for shaving the user will note that the edge c of the blade 7, distinguished by the lnumeral Son the reenforcing member '5, is a fresh edge and may be used as such.
