HnrNz, a citizen of the UnitedV States, and a resident of thek city yof Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new andV useful impro vements `in Casement-VVindow Hinges with Automatic Lifting and Locking Means, of which the following 1s a specification,V
My invention pertains to a easement window'hinge with automatic lifting and loclring means, and' hasfor its object'to provide such: a hinge which will enable the Casement -window to be pushed down behind the window stool, to make the window rain-storm proof, and which is provided with means acting automatically for locking said window in suchl closed positionto prevent the same from being pried or jimmied open from the outside. 4 Another object is to providesuch a hinge with means for automatically lifting the window above the window stool when the locking means hasl been released, so that the Window may be readily swung and opened inwardly. l, v Y n Another object is' to construct a hinge of this kind "in such manner that thev parts may be readily dissembled and assembled to adapt they hingefor use on either the right side or the left side of the window. y Other objects will appear hereinafter.

1n the drawings my improved Vhinge is illustrated in connection with a Casement window including the window parts or sashes 11 and 12 which. are swingably mounted, by means of my hinges, in the window frame 13, to engage inwardly of the transom 1st and toy be movable downwardly behind the window stool 15, thus preventing the rain from coming in under the casement window.
My improved hinge, illustrated'in these drawings, comprises two main parts 16 and 17, the part 16 having pintle barrels 1S adjacent its ends and providing an extended space therebetween, whilethe part 17 has a pintle barrel 19 mounted between said barrels 18 by'means of a pintle 20, which may include a fixed head 21 and a removable head 22, as indicated in Fig. 5, the pintle barrel 19 being shorter than the distance between the pintle barrels 18, thus permitting the hinge. part 17 to be moved longitudinally on the part`16 and Aon the pintle 20. The hinge part 17 preferably in@A cludes apart 17 arranged substantially at right angles to the main part 17, thus permitting the main part 16 to be mounted on the inward side of thevwindow frame while the part 17 is fastened on the innerface of the window sash, as shown in the drawings. The parts 16 and 17 are providedwith suitable openings for receiving screws 23 and 24 respectively to fasten the hinge parts on the window frame and on the window sash as indicated. The hinge part 17 with the attached window sash is movable on the pintle and along the hinge part 16 to lower the window back of the window stool 15, and is movable upwardly to the upper part of the pintle to clear the window stool and enable the window to be swung inwardly over said stool.
Means is provided for locking the window with the attached hinge part 17 in its lowered or closed position, and this means is arranged to engage the movable hinge part 17 and hold it in its closed position. The con struction of the locking means preferably includes a linger 25 mounted on the hinge part 16 by means of cleats or curved lugs 26 engagingin openings 27 provided adjacent the end of hinge part 16, and a spring 28 is mounted on hinge part 16 to press finger 25 against pintle 2O and into the path of pintle barrel 19, thus automatically locking the pintle barrel 19 with its hinge part 17 and the attached window sash in the lowered or closed position, a curved or raised portion 25 being provided on said finger 25 to be engaged for pressing the finger backward away from pintle 20 to permit return movement of'pintle barrel 19. A set of openings 27 and a spring 28 are provided adjacent each end of hinge part 16, thus ena-bling the finger 25 to be readily removed from the position shown in Fig. 5 and to be placed in the lower position, thereby enabling` the hinge to be used on the right-hand side of the window and to bring the locking finger at the upper end of the hinge when the hingle has been reversed.
Means is also provided for automatically lifting the hinge part 17 with its attached window sash upwardly when the locking finger 25 is withdrawn from its locking position, and this means preferably includes a coil spring 29 mounted on pintle 20 above the lowerpintle barrel 18 and preferably provided with a collar 3() at its upper end to form a pivot seat for the swinging movement of pintle barrel 19 thereon. This spring is of the required strength and tension to automatically litt the hinge part 17 with the particular window sash attached thereto, as soon as the locking finger is released. A guard member or sleeve 31 is mounted over spring 29 and collar 30, and is provided with a slot 32 for receiving the rib or flange portion 33 adjacent pintle bar- Yrel 19 of hinge part 17 when said hinge part with the attached window is moved downwardly into its closed position. A slot 34 is provided at the lower end of sleeve 31 to receive the rib or flange portion 35 of hinge part 16, and this sleeve thereby provides means for positively locking the hinge part 17 against swinging movement on the hinge part 16 when said part 17 is lowered and the locking finger 25 extends above the same in its locking position. The slot 34 is slightly offset from slot 32, and a similar slot 554- is offset in the other direction from slot 32, thus enabling the sleeve to be used reversibly, adapting the entire hinge for use on the right hand side of the window7 as well as on the left-hand side, said slot 84 receiving the rib at the opposite end of hinge part 16, when the hinge is used on the righthand side of the window, and suitable turnbolt 36 and locking member or eye member 37 being used in the customary manner, and a nut 38 holds sleeve 31 in position,
It is apparent from the above disclosure that the hinge is constructed symmetricallyand is readily reversible, by merely unthreading the head 22 and nut 38 from the pintle 20 and withdrawing said pintle, then removing sleeve 31 and spring 29, also unhooking the locking finger 25 from the openings 27, and placing the curved lugs 26 of the locking finger in the opposite openings 27 and moving the hinge part 17 towards the opposite end of the hinge part 16, then replacing the spring 29 and sleeve 31 with pintle 20 in the positions reversed from that shown in Figs. 5 and 6, thus adapting the hinge for use on the right-hand side of the window. It is also apparent that the hinge part 17 may be pressed down wa rd against the action ot the spring, and the attaehed window therewith lowered into its closed position to engage outwardlyot the windowsiool l5, and that at the saine time the spring la will automatically press the finger into lool-:ing position to retain the window positively in its closed and locked position, said hinge being furthermore retained in such locked position by the aid ot the .sleeve 31 with its slots 32 and Slet; and it is also apparent that by pressing the finger 25 outwardly, the spring 29 will automatically raise the hinge part 17 with the attached window imwards to clear the window stool 15 and permit inward swinging of thc window. This improved hinge is preferably used as the lower part of each window sash only, while the locking linger 25 andthe sleeve 31 with the spring 29 are left ofi from the hinges at the upper parts of the window sashes, thus enabling each sash to be opened with the use of' one hand for the locking finger.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred 'form of construction tor carrying my invention into effect. this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of' such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A easement window hinge comprising a part fastenable on the window sash and a part 'lastefnable on the window trame, the hinge part with the window sash being morable vertically on the other part and trame. spring means for automatically moving` said window sash and attached hinge part on the frame and other hinge part, a collar on said spring means to act as a pivot seat for swinging the hinge part with the window thereon, and a spring pressed locking member for autoniatically holding said window and hinge part in the lower closed position.
2. A hinge comprising a part with spaced pintle barrels, a pintle in said barrels.l another hinge part with a pintle barrel movable between the spaced barrels longitudinally on said pintle, a spring on said pintle tor automatically moving the movable harrel longitudinally of' said pintle. a guard sleeve on said spring mounted against llo liltl VEO V swinging movement on said first hinge part andl having a slot for receiving the second hinge part, and locking means for locking the second hinge part in said slot and to prevent swinging movement *thereof on the first hinge part.
3. A hinge comprising a part with spaced pintle barrels, another hinge part with a pintle barrel movable longitudinally on said first hinge part, a pintle removably mounted in said pintle barrels, a springremovably mounted on v said pintle to automatically nrove the second hinge part longitudinally i on the first part, 'and locking means removably mounted on said hinge for retaining the movable hinge part locked in a certain position on the first hinge part, said hinge having its parts constructed symmetrical and reversible to adapt the hinge for use at either the right Vside or left side of a window.
4. A hinge comprising a part with spaced pintle barrels, a piiitle in said barrels, an-` other hinge part with a. pintlebarrel movable between the spaced barrels longitudinally on said pintle, a spring on said piiitle Vfor automatically moving the movable barrel along said pintle, and a guard sleeve around said springbeing provided with an upper slot for receiving the movable hinge part to hold the same against movement on the other hinge part and with a pair 'of lower slots for selectively receiving the other hinge part, said slots and the entire hinge being constructed symmetrical to adapt the hinge for use at either the right .side 0r the left side of a window.
5. A hinge comprising a part with spaced pntle barrels, a pintle in said barrels, a Second hinge part with a pintle barrel movable between the spaced bairels longitudinally on said pintle, a spring on said pintle for automatically moving the movable barrel longitudinally on said pintle, a guard lsleeve on said spring provided with slots for selectively mounting it against swinging movement on said first hinge part and having a slot for receiving the second hinge part to hold the same against movement on the first hinge part, a collar on said spring to act as a pivot seat for swinging the movable hinge part thereon, and a spring pressed locking finger for locking the second hinge part in said slot and in position on the fir-st hinge part, said hinge having its parts constructed symmetrical and reversible to adapt the hinge for use at either the right side or the y left side of a window.
