Be it known that 1, JOHN L. C. HEINZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and
State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Self-Locking Hinge for Casement- Vindows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to a self-locking hinge for casement windows, and an object is to provide hinges with means which will permit the easement windows to be lowered on the outside of the window stool to make the window rainproof, and will likewise permit thewindows to be raised upwardly to clear said window stools and then to be swung inwardly. Another object is to pro vide suchhinges with self-locking means for holding said windows in their lowered and closed positions, and also for holding said windows in their raised position to be swung inwardly. And another object is to provide such hinges for casement windows which will lock the windows in their closed positionand will prevent them from being pried or jimmied open from the outside, and which hinges in conjunction with the usual turnbolt or hasp will'enable the windowsto be locked in a slightly raised or opened position without permit-ting opening of said windows from the outside. And a further object is to provide such hinges which are symmetrically constructed, so that they may be used interchangeably oneither the right hand or left hand window.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed. 1 The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which,

In the drawings 1 have shown my improved hinge in connection with av casement window including the swingable window parts 11 and 12, the part 11 being shown in its lowered or closed position and engaging along the outward side of the window stool 13 of the window frame 1%, while the part 12 is illustrated in its raised position adapted to be swung inwardly from the upper part of the window or transom 15, as indicated in dotted outline in Figure 2.
The improved hinge comprises two main parts 16 and 17, the part 16 having pintle barrels 18 adjacent its ends and spaced well apart, while the part 17 has a. pintle barrel 19 mounted between said barrels 18 by means of a pintle 20 which may be provided with a fixed head -21 and a removable head 22 as indicated in Fig. 5, the pintle barrel 19 being shorter than the space between the pintle barrels 18 and permitting the hinge part 17 to be moved a considerable distance longitudinally of the hinge part- 16 and the p'int-le 20. The hinge part 17 is preferably .ing screws 23 or the like to fasten the part on the sash frame, as best indicated in Figs. 3' and-4:; while similar openings are providedin the hinge part 16 to receive screws 21 for fastening said part 16 on the window frame. The hinge part 17 with the attached window is moved on the pintle 20 and along hingepart 16 to lower the window back of the stool 13, and is'inoved' upwardly to the upper part of the pintle to clear the window over the window stool and enable inward swinging thereof.
' I provide means for locking the window with the attached hinge part 17 in its lowered position, and also for looking or fastening the window with the attached hinge part in its upper position, and this means preferably comprises a member adapted to engage the hinge part 17 and prevent upward or downward movement thereot longitudinally oi the hinge part 16 and pintle 20. In the drawings I have shown this locking means including a cnrved member or linger mounted on the hinge part 16 by means of a lip 26 engaging in a slot 2? provided at an intermediate portion of the hinge part 16. A spring 28 is fastened on the hinge part 16 and presses against the linger 25 to automatically hold it across either end of pintle barrel 19 on hinge part 1? in order to prevent upward or downward movement of said pintle barrel along the 1 i 'le 20, a curved or raised part 25) being provided on the linger 25 for convenient engagement by a finger to press the same outwardly out of the path oi: the pintle barrel 1%) and permit longitudinal movement oi said bar and the hinge part 17. A springwasher or split washer 30 is preterably mounted on the pintle 20 adjacent each pintle barrel to provide resilience when the window is dropped with the hinge part 1? in its closed position.
This complete hinge reversible and is mountable on either the right hand side orthe left hand side of the window, in view of the 'laet that it is made entirely symmetrical, and this complete hinge is mounted preterablv adjacent the lower side of the window, while the hinge placed at the upper part of the window is identical with the one de scribed, but having the locking linger 25, and preferably also the associated spring 28, removed therefrom, in order that only one hand need be used for releasing the springpressed locking membe' when the window is to be opened with the other hand.
It is apparent from the above disclosure that the linger 25 engages across the pintle barrel 19 and holds the same locked in its closed position, to prevent the window from being pried or jinnnied open; and it is also apparent. th t by pressing the finger 25 outward the l inlle barrel 1%) with the hinge part 17 and the attached casement window may be raised, and that. thereafter the spring 28 presses the finger automatically inward and beneath said pintle barrel, thus permittin the window to be swung open, inwardly rrom the transom 15; and furthermore that when the window is to be lowered into its closed position, that the finger need merely be pressed back to permit the pintle barrel 19 and the attached window to be dropped into the closed position. lVith this construction of hinge, both of the easement windows may be placed in their raised but closed or joined position, by closing the turn bolt 31 which is mounted on one window so as to engage the eye portion 32 mounted on the other window, and the two windows may be locked in position to provide a slight opening between the window stool and the bottom of the windows l1 and 12.
lYhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into efi'ect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set. forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come. within the scope ol the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters: Patent is:
1. LL hinge comprising swingably connected parts. one of said parts being movable longitudinally on the other, and means, for locking one hinge part in position on the other, said hinge parts being construct-ml and arranged synin'ietrically so as to be reversible and mountable at either side ol a window.

A hinge comprising a hinge part with spaced pintle barrels, a pintle in said barrels, another hinge part with a pintle barrel movable between the spaced barrels and longitudinally on said pintle, resilient means between each two of said pintle barrels and a finger swingably mounted on the first part a certain position intermediate the spaced barrels and having spring pressing it to engage across the ends of the pintle barrel on the second part and lock the latter barrel in position either above or below said swingable finger. 4
5. A hinge comprising a hinge part with spaced pintle barrels, another hinge part with a pintle barrel movable between said spaced barrels and longitrulinally on the other hinge part, shoclc absorbing resilient means between each two of said pintle barrels, a finger swingably mounted on the first hinge part at a certain position intermediate the spaced barrels, and a spring pressng on said finger to automatically engage it across the ends of the pintle barrel on the second hinge part and to lock the latter barrel in position either above or below said swingable finger, said hinge parts being constructed and arranged symmetrically so as to be reversible and mountable at either side ol the window.
