J, GILES IRONING BOARD Filed August 3, 1922 Patented pr. 6i, 1926:.
UNITED STATE JOSEPHINE eILns, or WAREHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IRON IN G BOARD.
Application filed August 3, 1922.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnrI-IINE GILns, a citizen of the United States, residing at l/Vareham, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Ironing Board, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ironing boards, and has for its object the provision of Such a board adapted to be mounted in a support to permit horizontal pivotal adjustment, and which may be detached therefrom and the legs thereof folded on the board.
With this general object in view, and
such others as will be apparent from the description, the invention resides in the novel combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure l is a bottom plan of a board with the legs folded thereagainst.
Figure 2, a top plan view thereof,
Figure 3, a side elevation, and
Figure 4, a vertical section on the line 4 -4 of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view of the supporting bracket employed;
Figure 6 is a top plan view of the sup- Vporting bracket;
Figure 7 is a side elevation of the bracket.
The details of the invention comprise a board l of the general type, having suitably secured over the top face thereof a cover sheet 2 with padding 3 disposed thereunder. Gn its under face the board is provided at one end with a suspension ring 4: whereby it may be hung on a Suitable support when not in use.
The opposite end of the board is provided with a straight edge 5 and slightly inwardly of this edge and on the under face of the board is disposed a depending pin 6 adapted to be disposed in a rounded socket disposed in a bracket 7, which bracket is adapted to be clamped to a suitable support. The pin 6 when in its socket, extends entirely through the bracket and thus accidental displacement of the pin is prevented.
Hingedly connected to the under face of the board is a transverse' block 9 to each side of which are secured spreading legs 10,
Serial No. 579,551.
whereby the legs may be swung up to lie against the board, or lowered to a vertical position to support the board when in use. @ne end of a retaining bar 11 is hinged to the lower portion of the block 9 and is guided through a depending U bracket l2 disposed at the center of the board.
The free end of the bar ll is bent to provide a stop to limit outward movement of the block and legs, and when in operative posit-ion, the legs are held rigidly by means of engagement of the U bracket with ay notch formed adjacent the free end of the bar l1.
IVhen in use the board is mounted with the pin 6 disposed in the bracket socket' and pivoted horizontally to the position desired. The legs are then swung down and secured by engagement of the bar 1l and bracket l2 as described. The length of the pin 6 is such that owing to its extension through the bracket 7, it cannot slip out when pressure is applied at the far end of the board.
Vvlhile in this preferred form of the invention, I have illustrated and described certain details entering into the construction thereof, I desire it to be understood that I do not intend that the invention is limited thereby, but that any such changes may be made therein as fall within the scope of the claim.
I claim The combination with an ironing board, of a transversely depending block hinged on the under face thereof adjacent one end, supporting legs secured on opposite side edges of said block, a centrally disposed depending U-shaped bracket on the under face of said board and having its arms terminating in wings secured to said board, a longitudinally disposed fastening bar hingedly connected at one end to said block between said supporting legs, the free end `of said bar being guided through said U-shaped bracket and lterminating in a downwardly bent portion to provide a stop, saidL bar having a notch therein adjacent the terminal portion to engage over the bottom of said U-shaped bracket to retain said legs in supporting position, and a relatively large depending pin on one end of said board adapted to engage in an external socket.
JOSEPHINE GILES.
