JOHN M. BRUCE, OF WEST TOWNSEND, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT AIN STREET-LANTERNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,906, dated December 22, 1874; application filed November 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN M. BRUCE, of West Townsend, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street- Lamps, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in so constructing the posts and lamps, and providing the same with chains and counterweights, that the lamp can be drawn down to any convenient height for' lighting, and, when lighted, may be sent up by'a slight impulse to the proper height for use. v

Let A represent the ground or pavement which supports the lamppost. B and B' are two posts, both hollow, one of which, B', is shown in vertical section. The two posts B and B' are united at the top by the two curved pieces, C and G'. is the lantern or lamp, which is provided with a guiding-piece, M, which is so shaped at its ends as to fit partly around the posts B and B', so that they may serve as guides.
