25. The=inner end ofthe dogf35 projects slightly beyond the inner circumference of the rib 27 and-is engaged by the spring 37 as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and-4. v The dog-35 is alsoprovided with anangular pin or extension 38 which projectsoutwardlythrougli a slot 39 formed in the disk member 29, so
that said dog may be manually manipulated as will appear more fully below.v The disk member 29 may be retained in position-:by means of suitable `screws 40 passing therev through andengaging in the disk member 25.
Assuming the parts to be inA the. position shown in Figs. 3 and 4, should it be desired to change the combination, it isonly necessary to move-.the dog 35 radially inwardly by means of the extension 38, so as tovdisengage the nose of the said dog'from the recess'34 which it happens to be occupy ing, whereupon kthe ring member 30 is unlocked from engagement with' theV body 'or disk member 25V and may be freely rotated thereon.` The'relative positions of the two members may therefore be changed and when the desired' position has been rear-,hed
the dog 35 maybe released whereupon thel spring 37 will again force its nose into one 1 of the recesses 34 thereby efficiently locking thepartstogether again. v y
In some forms of lock it may be possible e to accomplish `movements of the dog 35 die rectly Vvby means of the lingers, but it ifs preferred to provide means upon the lock casing. l0 'whereby' this-may be effectively accomplished without access being vhad to the interior ofthe casing. To this end there isl provided upon the rear member 4l` of the casing a bossV 42 which is provided with a.
bore 43 through which passes a push member 44. The said member is-provided with a collar or` enlargement 45 behind which is mounted a coiled spring 46 which spring normally urges the said push 'member 44 toward the right, as viewed in Fig. 2.
The parts are so designed and constructed that the inner end of thevpush member 44 is preferably beveled, as indicated at 48, in close proximity to the angular extension 38 of the dog 35 `and when the member 44 is pushed inwardly the beveled Vend l48 of the said member-will 'engage the said extensionv 38 toy force the dog 35. out of its recess 34. With the parts held in this position, it is an easy matter to rotate the ring member 30 from the front of the lock as will be clear from Fig. 2 until the new position of the said member has been attained, whereupon byreleasing thepusli member 44,the
f parts will be restored to the positions shown in the ydrawings and the ring member 30 .efficiently locked to the body member25.
Referring now to the modified form of wheel shown in Figs. `6 to 9inclusive which is 4particularly adaptedfor use in the form of-lock yshown in the co-pending application of Meade Viildrick andiA. G; Hatch, No. 728,770, 'it will `be noted that this lock comprises a casing 5() in which is slidably mounted a bolt 5l having astud or shaft 52 rigid therewith and upon which is-mounted the permutation wheels 53. stud 52 of which is provided with suitable lugs orL projections 54 which are adapted to move through axialykeyways -55 Vtormed in the permutation wheels. Y.
These wheels, asis shown in detail in Figs. 8 and 9, comprise the boclyinembers 56, upon the exterior circumference of'which 1s loosely mounted the indicia bearing ring Ymember-57. The `said body member 56 is Y also provided with areduced lhub 58, the
exterior circumference `of which is provided H with a plurality of arcuately spaced notches or recesses 59, the -member 57 isalso prollOV vided with a recess60 in which is mounted an L-sliaped dog 61 which is. pivoted Aas at 62 to the said member 57 and the angular extension 63.of which is positioned to engage the said notches 59 as will lbe clear from Figs. 8 and 9. rl`he said dog 6l is also provided with a pin or extension 64 which .projects outwardly through ay slot 65 formed in the retaining ring 66 whereby movements of the saiddog 61 may be .controlled. A suitable flat spring 67. is `positioned within the recess (S0-behind saiddog 6l and normally urges its toe 63 linto an engagement with the notches 59. n
The operation of shifting the combination with this form of wheel is similar tothat already described in connection with the previous form, except, of course, that the pendently settable permutation tumblers mounted in said casing, each of'said tuml fmechanismIk includingy a locking bolt movnotches also serve as deten't notches forA receiving a portion of the detent springs 69, which are carried by the lock casingfO, see Fig. 7, whereby the wheels are held in any desired position.
