To all who/met mag/econoom." Be it known that I, C oNsrAN E. RANG, a citizen of the United States, Vand,resident of Chicago, in the', county of Cook and State of Illinois, have V invented new and useful Improvements 1n Mechanical -Pencils,\V of v readily renewed'orfrepaired and the lead replaced.
It is another object Aof this invention to provide a` mechanical pencil vof `the desired balance which is so designedand constructed as to permit its productioninany convenient Size. i
One objectionable feature of theimechanical pencils now on the market is the inability to readily renew thelead and it is, therefore, anotherobject of my invention tov provide a pencil of the character described in` which the pencil may be refilled either from the interior or the exterior.
It is a further object of this invention to generally simplify and improve the structure of mechanical pencils, I
And a still further object of this-invention resides in the provision of a mechanical pencil capable of production in a size most` conf delineated thereon scales in long and metric measure.- f
With the above and `other objects view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides .in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter lde-v scribed and more particularly dened 'by the appended claims, it bengjunderStOOd that such changes in the precise embodiment ofthe herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scopeof the claims.
In 'the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated one complete example of the Y physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the bestmode I have so far devisedfor the practicalapplieation of t he principles thereof, and, in which:

To insert a lead 30 in the pencil, screw shaft 13 is rotated by the head 12 to draw the guide nut 26 to its uppermost position adjacent collar llfand the lead istheninserted'through the bore"28 of the end guide` or nut member 2O until its inner end abuts an extracting rod or pin 29 carried by the guide member 26 and terminating slightly inwardly of the clutch fingers 22, the clutch lingers 22 frictionally engaging the inner end of the lead to secure the same in position. p
Asthe outer end of the*y lead 30 is con vvsumed, the head 12 is rotated to screw the shaft 13 out of nut26, as a result of which guide 25 and the lead holder telescope over the guide extension projecting the lead outwardly of the end member 20. When the screw. shaft has been turned suiiiciently to bring the lowermost ends of the slotsV 21 against the clutch linger 23, a further screwing ofthe shaft 13 outwardly of` nut 26 will cause the lead holder to be telev scoped, with the guide extensiominto' the guide'V member 25 causingthe ejector .pin 29 to extend beyondfthe clutch fingers in to the bore 28 oftheend member 20, ejecting f the lead remaining.` The shaft is then rotatedy in the opposite direction to 'move the parts to the positions illustrated in'Figure 2 for refilling.
TheA movement of the guide upwardlyy over the screw 13 is limited by alug or linger 31 formed on the upper end of the lead holder and engageable in one slot of the guide extension to abut the upper end 32 thereof when the guide 26V is rotated its full upward movement. Y
As will be readily obvious, all of the parts of my improved pencil may be readilyrenewed,"the leads may be readily renewed 'and' when the lead has been con- Lvaoee sumed down to a! small fragment the same is automatically ejected from the pencil.v
My pencil is especially adapted for' use in a pencil of a size most commonly used by draftsinen and when so used I provide scale 33 being in long measure and the scale two scales 33 and 34C on the shell 10, the
34 being inmetric measure to facilitate the work of afdraftsman in making sketches and obtaining dimensions of the parts.
It will vbe apparent from the foregoing` Y description taken in connection with the ac-` companying drawings that l provide'a pen-l ment of said shaft, an operating head on the shaft and positioned outwardly of one end of the shell, a guide member telescopedy over the screw shaft, a nut on the outer end portion of the guide member in which the screw shaft is threaded, a lead holder slidable in the inner end of they guide member, an end guide member mounted in the end of the shell remote froml the operating head, a guide extension carried by the end member and having its inner end slidable in the Y lead holder and screw shaft, and means carried by the lead holder for securing the vin'- ner end of a lead therein, the outer end projectable outwardly of the shell through the end member. As an article of manufacture, a pencil, comprising a shell, a lower slotted tubular guide member, a lower guide member carried by the lower end of said guide member mounted in the Shell, said nut member being of a shape adapted to Conform with that portion ot' the shell in which the same is mounted, a slotted lead holder, lead engaging fingersl on the lower end of said holder and projecting through the slots'in the lower guide, a tubular screw shaft surrounding said lower guide member, an upper guide member teleseoped over the `lsorew shaft, a nut member on the upper end of the upper guide member, projections carried by the lower end of the upper guide member and vadapted to ride in the slots` of the lead holder, and a rod carriedby and extending downwardly 'fromsaid upper guide member.
