- UNITE-,D55 sra-res JOSEPH BERG, or iiEw Yoan, N.' JY.

Application inea January 13,1926. serialV` ira-.sosia T all whom 'it may concern;
Be it known that lI, .IosErI-r BERG, a citizen of the United lStates, and a. resident of the city, county, and State of N ew York, have invented a certain new and` use'- ful Improvementin Bookbindings,..of which the following is a specification'. i
This invention relatesto abindin'g-for books and has for its object to provide such a binding which will be particularly applicable to check books, ledgers, or other books of account, where it is desirable to have the pages lie flat for convenience in writingor making entries in the book.
y This is particularly true of check books,
where entries have to be made upon the stubs `at positions close` to the binding, which at the present time is so rigid and inflexible Vthat the leaves or pages will notl lie flat and convenience in the useof the book Ais not found. f
One, ofthe main objects therefore, of my invention is to provide a permanent Mding for a book 'which will yafford ant extreme flexibility, permitting the pages. to
lie fiat when the Vbook is open and which will also providea strong and substantial binding in which the pages of the book are firmly and securely held.
IVth these objects and such other ob jects as may hereinafter appear, in view I have devised the particular arrangement of parts hereinafter set'forth and more particularljT pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
Reference is to be had to the accompanye.
ing drawing, forming a part hereof, in
which- Figure l is a sectional view through the o lie flat.
Throughout the various views ofthe drawings, similar reference characters designate similar parts.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention as disclosed in the accompanying drawing, l indicates a series of leaves or pages whichV gorto make up thel `body of the book.Y rIhese may be `of any shape lor size dependentuponthe type of book under consideration and as. stated/heretofore, the
:invention ispartieularly desirable in` connection with check books. lIt may betherefore, that the .series of leaves l aretpages of checks.
hesivelyvsecuring v,a 'strip 3 of 'an open mesh textile fabric to said rear-edges. Said binding strip 3 therefore `secures the leaves together -so that they cannot be separated readily. Adjacent their rear` edges Q, the pages are provided with a series of spaced perforations` and coil springs 5 pass through these perforations and vhold .the leaves together, .thus vco-operatingk `with the. bind-ing strip 3 whichis adhesively se- *tasV heretofore pointed out.
1 fLThe springs -5 have their ends, terminating in loopstl and wires or rods 7 pass through these loops on opposite sides of the batch of leaves, thus holding the springs in place and resiliently holding the leaves together.
' At S is shown the cover 'of the bookanc said cover has its back parti) adhesively secured to the back'edges of the sheets 2 and over the fabric .binding Vstrip 8.- Parts 10` of said cover also embrace the sides of the leaves .and are also secured adhesively or otherwise thereover, at the same time overlying the ends 'of thesprings 5 and the wires 7 which extend through said springs. From the foregoing, the manner in which the book is used is readily apparent.
In Figure 3, the book is shown inan open position, where it will be seen that the Vsprings vpossesses such resiliency that they permit the leaves to separate to a great extent and enable them to lie out perfectly flat when the book is in an. open position. The means for permanently securing togeth'er the rear Vedges of the leaves consisting of the adhesively secured fabric strip 3 and cover makes a verysecure yet flexible joint and cooperates with the springs to secure the, desired' result. Such adhesive securement of the leaves at their'rear edges prevents saidl leaves from being .pulled outY through the springs 5 should an accidental or suc denpull or tug on oneolj the leaves take place. lithout the use ofthe adhesive These pages l fpreferablyhave 1` `their rear 'edgesQl united together by ad- ,cured to the back edges ofl these leaves as vthe back and side parts 9 and l0 of the ngi securing nieans on the bach of the leaves, said leaves would readily pull thrcugh the ioils of the springs and be cut by rife Wire forming said springs and thus become. readily detached from the book.A
The construction presented by applicant avoids this by securing the'leaves insuch manner as to resist a :longitudinal pull upon the leaves and 'yet permit the leaves to readily separate and lie perfectly that' when lthe book is open.
Having described one'enibodiinent'oil niy intention., itis obvious that ythe Vsanie" is not p `to -be restricted thereto, but is broad enough -to cover `all structures coming Within ie y scope of the annexed claims.
.Vhat 'I elaini is:
l. A binding for boolseconsisting of a plurality of pages having vtheir rear edgesadhesively united, said slieetsbeing perfo-r rated near said rear edges, springs klocated in' said lperforations, Wires "extending' through the ends of vsaid springs en#oppositel sides or' the pages, and a cover 'adhesiyely secured over the rear edges et the"pe-ges` and over the ends oit' the springs andthe Wires.v`- Vjf,
2. A binding for books'consisting ofi2 plurality of pages, nieans for pei'nranenit securing together vthe `rear edges of pages, perforations in saidpages, separate coil'springs extending through said '.perO-` hesively secured 'to theirredges and over the ends of the elastic ineinbers.
4. A kbinding for books consistingsjof a plurality of pages', a strip of fabric secured adhesiely along oneedge of said pages and uniting "the saine, said pages being perforated near said edge, separate coil springs `located in said perforations, a continuous ywire extenfgling through the ends of said spr: gs on-each side of Ithe batch of pages, a
cor ,r secured vover said pages and having its bacl adjhes'iye'ly secured over the strip oi j fabric which united the sheets and its sidesr adhesiyely 'secured over theV ends of the springs and the wires extendingl ASigned at the city, county .and State of New Viorlr, this 11th day of Januaryf`1926.
