FILLING MACHINE.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known'that I, Lnwls D. NELSON, a citizen of ,theUnited States, residing at Goldwater,- county of Branch, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filling Machines, of which the following 1s a specificatlon.
This invention relates to improvements 1n fillling machines.
My improvements are especially designed by me for embodiment in bag filling machines for cement, plaster and the like and I have shown my nnprovements as I have embodied them in a bag filling machine, although they are'adapted for use in other relations.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved bag filling machine for ,heavy material such as cement which is automatic in its operation. I

In the drawing the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, I provide a frame consisting of a base 1 having a pedestal 2 mounted thereon carrying the hopper 3 and the ejector cylinder 4:, this cylinder being connected to the bottom of the hopper by the chute or feed inlet extension 5 of the cylinder. The cylinder has a tangential discharge passage 6, see Fig. V. Within the cylinder is a rotor or impeller designated generally by the numeral 7 and comprising a spider 8 having radial arms. For convenience in assembling the impeller is made up of sections as shown in Fig. V.
The cylinder wall is continued at 11 through the chute or passage 5 leading to the hopper but has side inlet openings 12 communicating with the hopper discharge.
This prevents the cement or other material from falling directly upon the blades or its weight resting directly thereon, but-allows it to flow in at the sides of the impeller in the quantities which the impeller is adapted to handle and prevents packing or clogging. The rotor shaft 13 is driven-from the belt l4 and the pulley 15 on the shaft 16.
Within the hopper I provide an agitator comprising a vertical shaft 17 having a plurality of radial arms 18 disposed in spiral relation thereon, these arms being inclined forwardly so that when the agitator is r0- tated the arms ten-d to lift the material upwardly, at the same time stirring and agitating it so that it falls into the chute 5 by gravity only and is not packed therein, there being no tendency of the agitator to feed the material forwardly but merely 'to prevent its banking or clogging in the hopper and to insure that it is delivered to the ejecting rotor in the most desirable form 1Igor discharging from the cylinder into the ags. 1
The shaft 17 is supported by a bearing bracket 19 arranged within the hopper, the
shaft 17 having aworm gear 20 thereon meshing with the driving Worm 21 on the shaft 22., This shaft 22 is driven from a belt 23 and a pulley 24 on the shaft 16.
With this arrangement of parts the cement or like material is very rapidly discharged and at the same time the tendency to clog or pack or choke the cylinder is minimized.
The machine is designed to deliver into valve bags which are slipped upon the spouts 25. One of the bags is indicated at 26. The spouts 25 are pivotally mounted at 27 on the carrier 28' which is in turn mounted on thescale beam 29 pivoted at 30 and provided with a weight shown conventionally at 31. This spout carrier also serves the function of a valve for the discharge opening 6 of the ejector cylinder, the carrier having two openings .32 therein adapted to alternately register withthe opening 6 of the cylinder. The carrier being pivotally mounted upon the scale beam has an oscillating movement on its pivot and also an up and down movement on the scale beam, or raises and lowers as the scale beam'is actuated.
To automatically oscillate the member 28 I provide a yoke 33, the same being formed, in the structure illustrated, in the upper end of the member 28 and an actuating lever 34 pivoted at 35 to engage this' yoke, the lever being actuated by the spring 36 slidably engaging the slotted arm 37 on the upper end of the lever. Vith the parts thus arranged,
when the, member 28 is raised the spring is placed under stress storing power for the actuating, of the lever.
\Vhen the carrier is lowered as by the tilting of the scale beam under the weight of a filled bag, thelever is swung by the spring to the opposite end of the yoke, thereby actuating the carrier. It is intended that the operator shall place a bag upon the spout, that is, in inoperative position, while a bag is being filled so that as soon as the discharge passage of the ejector cylinder is uncovered the bag isplaced to receive it. The spouts are automatically returned to their horizontal positions by the coiled springs 38 arranged on their pivots.
The spouts are supportedin their horizontal position by the keeper arm 39 which projects through an opening 40 in the member 28 depending at the front thereof so that, the upwardly projecting arms 41 on the spout-s swing under the keeper. When the carrier moves downwardly with the tilting of the scale beam these arms pass from under the keeper allowing the spout to tilt under the weight of the filled bag and the bag to slip therefrom. The arm 39 is provided with a thrust bearing 42 under which the member 28 oscillates, the same serving as a lateral. support.
I provide a platform 43 which is pivotalyoke 49, this platform hanger being carried by the scale beam. Thelat ch 47 is held in engagement with the pin 50 by means of the spring 51. On the downward movement of the platform which occurs when the scale beam is actuated the latch 47 engages with the trip 52, thereby releasing the latch allowing the platform to tilt under the weight of the filled bag discharging the bag into the chute 53. The platform is returned to its erected position by the weight 54 carried by the rearwardly projecting arm 55 on the platform. The pedestal has an opening 56 therein adapted to receive this weight. The
releasing of the spout and of the platform' are timed so that they occur sin'iultaneously,
thus providing for the automatic discharge material in the cylinder being minimized. I have illustrated and described one pracg t'ical embodiment of my invention. not attempted to illustrate or describe other template as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a hopper, an ejector cylinder disposed so that a segmental portion of said.
cylinder projects into said hopper, the sides of said segmental portion being open providing side inlet openings, said cylinderhaving a tangentially disposed discharge opening, a rotor comprising a spider having radial blades mounted thereon and annular side members at the outer. ends of said blades whereby the material to be ejected may pass laterally to said blades from said side openings of said cylinder, and an agitator dis-' posed in said hopper above said cylinder and provided with forwardly inclined radial arms so that they tend to lift the material upwardly, the arms being spaced to permit the material to fall between them by gravity.
2.
