IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HO LDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,871, dated December 15, 1874; applLation filed November 19, 1674.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES ROLLO, of Farley, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to'which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon,

which form a part of this specification.

My invention consists of elastic traveling holding-rollers, having the form of truncated cones, interposed between the adjacent faces of the top and bottom sash-stiles, in horizontal positions, with the base of the cone next to the glass, so that, as the sash are opened and closed, the enlarged base ends serve to keep them from coming out of place, and fitted so tight that they constantly tend to force the sash apart, and thereby press and bind them against the window-beads sufficient to hold each sash in position at any desired point without other support.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front view of a window, with the yielding holding-rollers in position between the inner faces of the vertical sash-stiles; Fig. 2, a cross-section; Fig. 3, a horizontal section of the same, and Fig. 4 one of the holding-rollers.

Between the adjacent faces of the vertical stiles a of the sash are arranged rubber holding-rollers b, in horizontal positions, with their inner smaller ends next the casing of the window-frame, and their sides bearing horizontally upon the said faces of the stiles, in the space between which said rollers travel by the opening and closing of the sash. The diameter of these rollers is greater than the space between the stiles a, and are compressed between the latter to a degree that will cause them to be pressed alike against the faces of the stiles, and force them outward against the vertical sash-beads c with sufficient pressure to hold the sash when opened. These rollers b are truncated cones, with their base ends 0 outward, and this form serves to hold them in place under the movement of the sash, by reason of the enlarged ends a bearing with greater force upon the said stiles a as the roller travels between them, and in this way they are not only prevented from working out of place, but are retained within the open spaces d between the stiles, in proper positions for rolling up and down.

When the sash are closed, these holdingrollers are in the center-that is, just between the top rail of the lower and bottom rail of the upper sash, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1; and they are prevented from working out vertically by stops or clips 0 e, secured to the upper cross-rail f of one and the lower cross-rail g of the other, so as to extend over the space between the vertical stiles, just in the path of the rollers. In opening either sash the rollers roll upward, and in closing them the rollers travel downward.

I am aware that it is not broadly new to employ traveling elastic balls or rollers to hold the sash in place as it is opened and closed; and I do not claim such a device, or its combination with the window-sash and frame, irrespective of my construction and manner of employing such traveling holdingrollers.

I claim- 1.'The combination, with the sash of a win dow, of the yielding traveling holding-rollers b, interposed between the sash-stiles a, and bearing alike upon their adjacent faces, substantially as set forth.

2. The yielding sash-holdin rollers I), having the form of a horizontally-placed truncated cone, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination, with the yielding holding traveling rollers 11, arranged as described, with the stop-clips e, of the sash, as and for the purpose set forth.
