Be it known that I, .HEoTon V. LOUGH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident ot'llarttord, in the county 0% Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain. new and useful. Improvements in Faucets, of which the. following is a. specification,
The. invention relates to. improvements in faucetsand more particularly to quick-opening faucets adapted to be. used in connection with. oil billfrels or the like, or as a molasses gate,-,etc.
An object of the. invention is the provision of ,a device of ,the character, referred to which; shall bensiniple, durable and comparatively inexpensive to produce, which-may be easily and quickly operated and Lin vwhich the taucetior passagewaymay be. quickly .opened or closed by movement otlahandleverfrom one positionio another. Referring to the. drawings, the. openended tube l of suitable. inetal-isshown asplfQ' vided with a screw-threaded end 2 adapted to be screwed into va threaded bung opening of an oil barrel or the like, the tube being 1, as, it. extends forwardly. from. shoulder 3, preferably circular in cross section, and the sleeve 5 has a suitable bore to slidably fit thereon, the exterior of the sleeve having, however, a polygonal shape in crosss'ection, with straight vertical'sides 5 as is indicated in Fig. 3. The side portions of the sleeve are cut away somewhat at the rear, as is indicated at8 in Fig. 2,- to form recesses which will fit about the lugs 4 on shoulder 3 when the sleeve is in its rearmost po sition, shown in Fig. 1.

The lever is connected to the fixed tube 1 by the spring links 12, 12, one on each side of the device and preferably mounted between the arms 9 of the hand lever and the he links are pivotally connected at their rear ends to lugs 4: on shoulder 3 of the tube as indicated at 13, the forward ends of the links being pivotally connected to arms 9 of the hand lever, as is indicated at 14.
Links 12 are preferably formed of spring steel and are preferably each given a reverse curve, as shown. -VVhen the hand lever is swung back from the position shown in Fig.
1 to the position shown in Fig. 2, the link connection between the tube and hand lever serves to push the sleeve forwardly over the I tube soas to unseat the end 15 of the tube from the packing ring 16 which preferably is provided within the closed end 6 of the tube. This effects a quick opening of the de vice and fluid will flow through the end of tube 1 and out through the spout 7 in the sleeve.
lVhen the connection is to be closed the hand lever is swung forwardly by handle portion 11, the sleeve and the pivotal con nection 10 of the hand lever necessarily sliding inwardly over the tube. A comparatively short movement of the hand lever from the Fig. 2 position to the'Fig. 4 position sufthe lever has dropped down almost into the horizontal plane in which are located the pivots 10 of the lever and the rear connection 13 of the links. The further downward movement of the lever into the Fig. 1 posimovement also results in locking the parts I firmly in closed posit on, with the ball or transverse portion 11 of the lever resting against the'top of the sleeve. When now the faucet or valve is againto be opened upward pressure on bail 11 carries the connection 1 1 of the links" above the horizontal center, whereupon the springiness of the links'will aidin the continued opening movement of the lever. position sufices to entirely open the connection between the tube and spout 7 effecting the quick opening of the device.
The construction may be provided witha lock to prevent opening'of the faucetby the hand lever when desired. sleeve has 2. lug 17 formed thereon with an opening 18 therethrou'gh, through which the hasp 19 of a padlock may be inserted to lock the lever in its bottom position. When this v construction is used the rear edge portion of the bail 11 of the hand lever is cut away jsufficiently to permit movement of the same down over the lug 17. It will be noted that in the construction described the links 12 and the portion of the hand lever extending between connection 1 1 which the opening andclosing are effected by the sliding movement of the pivot of the lever as well as by the rotation of the lever about its pivot.
It should be understood that theinvention is not limited strictly to the details of construction which have been particularly described, but that the same is as broad as is indicated by the accompanying claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a faucet, the combination of an open ended tube, a sleevemounted thereon having a closed end adapted to seat against the outer, en dof said tube to close the same, said sleeve having a lateral discharge opening therethrough adjacent to its outer end,
a hand lever pivotally connected to said sleeve, and a spring link pivotally connecting said tube and lever, so arranged as to move said sleeve to closed or open position as said lever is moved in one direction or the other and to be placed under stress in a position such'as to press the sleeve against the end of the tube, when said sleeve seats against the end of said tube.
2. In a faucet, the combination of an open,
endedvtube, adapted to be fixed in 'position, a'sleeve slidably mounted thereon, having a closed end adapted to seat against the outer end of said tube to close the same, said sleeve having a lateral discharge opening therethrough adjacent to its outer end, a hand lever pivotally connected at one end to said sleeve, adapted to swing over a surface thereofclosely adjacent thereto, from a lower to a raised position, and a link pivotally connected at its ends to said tube and hand lever, so arranged as to hold the closed end of said sleeve in firm contact with the end of said tube when the lever is in one position, and tocause the movement of said sleeve outwardly onsaid, tube, to open the end thereof, when the lever is swung to. its opposite position.
3. In a faucet, the combination of an open ended tube, a sleeve mounted thereon having a closed end adapted to seat against the outer end of said tube to' close the same, said sleeve having a lateral discharge opening therethr-ough adjacent to its outer end, a hand lever pivotally connected adjacent one end to said sleeve, and a curved metal link connected at one end to said tube to the rear of the pivot of said lever, in the approximate horizontal plane thereof, and at its other end to a point on said lever which moves from above the pivot of the lever toa position in front of and below said pivot, asrthe lever descends and the italic end seats against the closed sleeve enc.
4. In a faucet, the combination of an open ended tube, adapted to be fixed fin position, a sleeve slidably mounted thereon having a closed end adapted to seat against the outer end of said tube to close the same, said'sleeve having a lateral discharge opening therethrough adjacent to its outer end, a hand lever comprising parallel arms pivoted to opposite sides of said sleeve, eX-' tending upwardly and connected by a transverse handle portion adapted to rest against the top of said sleeve when the tube end and sleeve are seated together-in closed position, and forwardly extending curved links, connecting points on said tube at the rear of the pivots of said hand lever arms to points on said arms which move from above said pivots to positions in front of and be low said pivots as the lever descends in seating the tube end and sleeve end together.; I

In a faucet, the combination of an open ended tube, adapted to be fixed in position, a sleeve slidably mounted-thereon having a closed end adapted. to seat against the outer end of said tube to close the same, said sleeve having a lateral discharge opening therethrough adjacent to its outer end, a liand lever pivotally connected at one end to said sleeve, adapted to swing over a surface thereof closely adjacent thereto, from a lower to a raised position, and a link pivotally connected at its ends to said tube and hand lever, so arranged as .to form a toggle joint with said lever, to align and hold the closed end of said sleeve in contact with the end of said tube when the lever is in lower position, and means for locking the lever against movement from said lower position.
6. In a faucet, the combinationof an open ended tube, adapted to be fixed in position,
a sleeve slidably mounted thereon having a closed end adapted to seat againstthe outer end of said tube to close the same,
said sleeve having a lateraldischarge opening therethrough ad acent toits outer end, a hand lever pivoted to said sleeve, to move forward and back with said sleeve and to swing about its pivot from an upper position to a lower position, said sleeve having a surface against which said lever seats in its lower position,and a resilient link connecting said tube and lever at such points as to constitute a toggle with said lever, and to cause av limited movement of said lever downwards to close said tube and sleeve ends together, and a further movement of sald lever to its lower seated position to swing saidrlink past the pivot of said lever, to spring said link and resiliently press said tube together.
