Improvements in Typewriters, of which theV following is a specification.
'Ihis invention relates to typewriters and consists in combining, as .hereinafter set forth and claimed, a pluralityT of type con.
trol levers and key levers with coupling elements arranged so that each type control' lever requires the depression ,of two keysfor its operation and so that a depression of any two' key levers togetherpcauses the operation of a definite type control lever.-
This arrangement vhas the advantage that a large number of types can be controlled by means of a comparatively small number of keys. f
Fig. 41 of the accompanying drawings represents a'diagram showing one vmode of coupling' the key levers and ftypecontrol levers, f H

modification,
Fig. 8, a plan, and
Fig.i9, a side view ot the same.
Figs. 10 and 11 represent each a Jfront ViewV and a plan of alternative thrust members, and
Fig. 12 is a diagram showing the coupling of the keyrlevers in the construction accordingv to Figs. 7 to 9.
The type control levers 5 and the key levers 1 are arranged to rock about a uni.- versal shaft 4. In the construction according to Figs. 1 to 4 each type control lever 5 is providedu at its free end '3 with a thrust member in the form of atransversely arranged pivoted beam 2 having arms of equal length. The beam 2 co-operates with two key levers for the engagement with which it has at the end of each arm an upright 6. Ar
depression of one of these key levers merely rocksthe beam 2 about its pivot 3 without aiiectigf t type control lever; If both .ends of 'thebeam Vare engaged, however, by .the depression of both key levers, thebeam opposes lthe movement and causes its l"type control lever to be operated. The beams 2 are ofdiiierent lengths and span two `orv PATENT` .oF-Fies(` more key levers, and each key lever. 'cooperates with several beams, the arrangement being lsuch that a depression ofv any two key levers causes a definite type control i lever to.A be operated.
Fig. v1, in which the typecontrol levers are indicated by the circles 3, shows the arrangement` for ten key levers whereby, when depressed inpairsa's just described, vforty-tive type control levers may be operated. Bythe type control levers available would be iiftytive.v i i As an alternative tothe beam 2, the: type control v.levers T5 may be provided with brackets 14 in which. a rod 15 is adapted to rods are vbevelled .for co-operation with bevelled lugs 16 carried by thekey levers 1. 'i
A depression of only. one key lever causes a therefore be transmitted to the type control lever.
In th-e modified arrangement shown in Figs. 7 to 12, the thrust `members are composed of short pellets 15 which are iitted transversely in the type control levers 5 so as to be capable of lateral displacement, the ends of the pellets being rounded oft for engagementV with the bevelled edges 11 of the key levers 1. In this instance there is a key lever at each side of each type control lever, and both key levers must be depressed in order to operate the type control lever, one key lever being common for both type control levers adjacent to it. To enable a largenumber of type control levers to be operated Fig. A12, from which the key levers them# selves are absent, she-ws the grouping of the l addition of another lever, the Vnumber'o'f l' Vslide,.as shown in Fig. 5. Theendsof the y ieril j vpendant opposes the movement and causes,
by :hea s 12 for engagementwith the key levers. Y When only one lever Lis depressed, the pendant-swings about the pivot 3. VVhen both n levers for forty-five type control levers, for
the operation of: which ten groups of key levers, andthus ten keys, are required.l
Preferably, the bridge pieces 7 are connected to their levers bylneans 01E-tail pieces 8 and rivets 9. For convenience of illus* tration, the bridge pieces 7 are shown in Figs'. 8 'and 9 to be supported by straight uprights,
' butthe latter must `practice, if; placed close together, be curved about the shaft 1l, Y as shown by dotted` lines inFig, 9'in order to clear each' other. v
'The slidabley pellets 15 niay'befreplaced endantsk 2' (Fig. 10) having bevelled key leversv are depressed, the head of the the type control lever: to be'operated. Another alternative is-shown in Fig. 11 where the thrust member is composed of al 'swivelled plate 2^ having two wings which must both be' actedupon in order to operate thetype ,control lever.
K Ther arrangement of Figs, 7 to -9 has the advantage that the Weight o'therocking masses can be concentrated near the sli-aft 4, a noiselessoperationA being'thu's ensured.
The type control levers 5, insteadot carryingthe type's'theinselvea may be yadapted to operate a type wheelinknovvnvrnanner.
The usualfshift keys'may be en'fiployedl to double ortreble the number ofV characters controlled ,by each bar.
y,The relative position of thedierent elements can be varied according to requirements.
