SPOOL Filed July 24, 1925 Patented Mar. 30, 1926 UNITED STATES time? GEORGE H. man, or, BROOKLYN, ew Yon-K.
I 4 sroon.
Application filed July 24, 1925. S eria1lNo.i5, 8o1.l f i To all whomitmay concern; i
Be it known that I, GEORGE H; Brno, a citizen of'the UnitedStates, and a resident of Brooklyn in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements inv Spools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spools for receiving ribbonand other narrow fabric-s as it is usual to prepare them for sale, and more particularly to such spools including abody upon which the ribbon is wound and separate end flangessecured to opposite ends of said body to retain the ribbon thereon.
One object. of the invention is to provide a spool of the character described embodying novel and'improved features of construction for securing said end flanges to ,the body;
Other of'this character a novel and improved combination of a metal tube and means tocooperate with said tube for obtaining a strong, durable and easily produced assembly of the bodyand the end flanges of the spool; to thus provide in such a spool a body having an axial" opening to loosely receive said metal tube, and flanged bushings or thimbles to fit the ends of said tube and interposed between the tube and said bodyandsaid end flanges, the ends of the tube being upset or expanded to clamp against said end flanges on said body and to obtain other results and advantages as may be'brought out by the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
, in which the same reference characters designate corresponding and like parts throughout the several v ews, 4 r
Figure 1 1sja longitudinal vertical sectional view through a spool embodying the objects are to provide in a spool Figure 8 is a deta chedperspective view of a modified form ofrivet tube, and
Figure 9 is a fragmentary endview of a spool including a tubular rivetQsuch as shown inFigure 8. V
- Specifically describing the embodiment of the lnvention shownoin Figures 1 and 2, the reference character-1 designates a "drum formed of any suitable material such/as cardboard and upon which is adapted to be wound the ribbon or the like, said drum having alined axial openings 2 in theends thereof. End flanges 3 of any suitable material such as cardboard; are applied to opposite'ends of the drum 1, said flanges being of greater diameter'than the drum 1 so as to retain the ribbon upon the drum. flanges 3 are formed with axial openings 1- to -register with the opening 2 in the ends of the druin l. For securing the flanges 3 to the ends ofthe drum, I. utilize a metal tube 5 to loosely. pass through the openings The 4t and 2 in the flanges and drum respectively.
upon each end of the tube 5 is fitted a thimble or flanged bushing 6 the body of which projects into the openings 2 and 4 and the flange 7 ofwhich bears against the outer surface of the corresponding end flange 3, the end of they body having the flange being flared or rounded as at'50. The ends of the'tube'l') are nicked or expandedoutwardlyas indicated "at 8, into-the flared portion 50 and,. againstthe flange? of the corresponding thiinble- 6,. \Vith this construction, the flanges '3 are firmly clamped against the ends of the-drum 1.between the drum and the" flanges 7 of the thimbles' 6, and the upset ends 8 of the tube 5 hold the *thimbles in-tight engagement with the end flanges f 'the spool. The ends of the .tube
'5 are disposed inwardly of the planes ofthe flanges'7 sons to'perinit' the spools to be closely packed end to end. The tube 5 is thus'substantially a metal tubular-rivet, and the thimbles 6 reenforce' the ends of the tube during the expandingoperation, prevent injury to the flanges 8-a11d the drum 1 and *provide an extended-bearing on the flanges 3 around "the openings/t which prevents v tearing of the flanges from the thimbles and reenforces th'espool at its axis.
I In some instances, the pastebo'ard of which the drum 1 and flange '3 may be formedis 's'o' fle xible as to bend inwardly or collapse a's' the ends "of the tube 5 are :upset,
and accordingly I may utilize a metalsleeve 9 upon which the drum leis mounted and which in turn receives the thimbles 6i and the tube 5, as shown in Figure 3 of the draw; ings. The sleeve 9 is preferably of 'a'length to project beyond the ends of=tlie druniil a distance slightly less than the thickness the end'fianges 3 of thespool, and accord ingly whenthe ends of the tube.5,,are upset, the ends of the sleeve 9 ie'enforc'e" the struc ture. so; as to prevent ,.collapsi ng of,tl1e ends more, theJsleeyeQ reenforcedthe spool at its center. y
A'snnilar effect, may be accomplished by the; use of ahwoodencorefor. bushing, 10 as shown in Figure 5: of" the drawings. This wooden coremay be ofa length only suf i cient to passithroughthe, axial openin 1n M v i ca-pm the drum? 1'; andsthe th nibles. (i clamp; the

The end flanges 3 of. the spool areclan ped between the-flanges '7 of the th-imbles and the ends of thegbody 1-1. Thebody 11 may have the, ribbon directly, woundjthereon, or
a drum having the ribbon woundthereon may be, fitted-upon the body 11in; a manner simila r;to "that illujsttated ;in Figure 5;
