Description
J. EVANS.
Blank Bars for Elliptic-Spring Heads.
No.157,80 7.. Patented 090.15.1874.
THE GRLPHlOCQPHbTO4-ITH.398x44 PARK PLACEJLY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN EVANS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
lMPROV EMENT lN BLANK-B ARS FOR ELLIPTIC SPRING-HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,807, dated December 15, 1574; application filed May 22, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN EVANS, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Skelp from which to Manufacture Ears of Springs, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improved skelp from which to cut blanks for use in the manu-' suitable punch and die I then cutfrom the bar the right and left ears B and 'B.
In punching out the cars from the bar all that is necessary is to reverse the latter and feed it forward after each ear is punched, the punch taking effect on dotted line ac, (shown in Fig. 1,) so that right and left cars can be cut from the bar with very little waste of material.
This plan of punching right and left cars from a bar with the View of economizing metal, is shown in my Patent N 0. 88,861, wherein the skelp, however, has but one rib at each edge.
After the ears have been-thus formed, they are fitted to the spring-bar D, as shown in Fig. 2, one edge of the spring fitting tightly between the ribs of one ear, and the other edge between the ribs of the other car, after which the spring and ears are welded together by the aid of suitable dies, which impart the desired shape to the end of the spring.
I claim as my invention- A skelp consisting of a bar, A, having on opposite sides at each edge parallel ribs, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN EVANS.
Witnesses WM. A. STEEL, HARRY SMITH.
