IMPROVEMENT IN MILLSTONEBUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,797, dated December 15,1874 application led September 23, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SENECA CULvER, of
Sandwich, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Millstone-Bush; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings which form part of this specilication, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, and Fig. 3 a detail view.
This invention has relation to the bushing of millstones; and has for its object to provide for the adaptation and automatic adjustment of the spindle-followers to the position, wear, and movements of the spindle.
The improvements will'be first described, and then specifically claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A designates a millstone, of which B is the bush and C the spindle. Said bush has radial parallel-sided cavities D, to hold the followers d, keys e, and adjusting-screws e. The followers are made concave on their inner surfaces, to coincide with the conveXity of the spindle, and have horizontal ridges or enlargements on their sides, at a, which rest against the walls of the cavities D, allowing said followers to oscillate laterally, so as to correspond with the movements of the spindle. The followers are also recessed behind for the reception of the tapering or wedge-shaped keys e. A groove is formed in each follower, as shown at a', for the passage of the adjusting-screw e', which enters the bottom of the recess D,
or base of the bush. At the sides of said groove the follower is beveled toward both ends from the middle part g. The .key is brought to bear against the apex of the beveled surface of the follower, and is adjusted vertically, so as to press the follower more or less against the spindle by the adjusting-screw e. The key is grooved ath for the passage of the screw, and has a horizontal channel at h1 to receive a collar, h2, upon the screw, by means of which said screw and key are coupled, so as to be raised and lowered together.
The object of the bevel of the follower at g, as also of the curvature or bevel of the sides, at i, is to allow the follower to oscillate radially.
The heads of the adjusting screws are swaged, as shown, so that a Wrench may be applied to turn them.
The double oscillation of the followers laterally upon their side ridgesand upon the angle g vallows them to coincide perfectly with the wabble of the stones and peculiar motion of the spindle.
I claim as my invention- 'Ihe combination, with the bush D, of the double oscillating followers d, recessed and grooved at the back and ridged at a, the vertically and horizontally grooved wedges e, and the vertical adjusting-screws e having collars h2, all as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. v
