PATENT OFFICE.
ALLEN P. GROVER, OF MEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
OILING DEVICE FOR LEATHER-FINISHING MACHINERY.
Application filed October 3, 1923. Serial No. 666,411.
To all 10720121 it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN P. Gnovna, citizen of the United States, residing at Meflford, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and use Improvements in Oiling Devices for Leather-Finishing Machinery, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable others versed in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to leather shaving and finishing machinery, and more particularly to that type employing a roller over which the hide is passed in shaving or finishing, which roller requires the application of oil to avoid sticking of the hide thereto.
My invention has for its objects to eliminate danger of injury to the operator; to increase the production possibilities of any given number of machines and operators; to eliminate the hand application of oil, substituting therefor a constant automatic and positively uniform application and insuring a constant and uniform pressure of the oil applying mechanism; to insure the application of clean oil free from the foreign substances incidental to hand application; to minimize damage to skins through excessive oil application; to reduce the difficulties resulting from excessive oil application, incidental. to dyeing processes; to minimize oil consumption; to reduce manu facturing costs; to provide a means for adjusting the amount of oil to be applied for varying manufacturing needs; to insure a maximum and uniform spreading of the skin over the roller for shaving and finishing purposes; to thereby minimize the possibility of injury to the skin during the shaving or finishing process; and to provide the various other advantages and results made evident in the following specification.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by means of an oil reservoir positioned beneath the roller to which the oil is to be applied, in which reservoir is placed an oil applying unit, preferably of felt or other suitable material, held in contact with the roller by means of a spring, effectively positioned for that purpose. My oil applying unit may be formed as a wick fitted to the oil reservoir and held in position against the roller by spring pressure.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification Figure 1 shows a side view of my device; Figure 2 shows a sectional View of the device on the line mm in Figure 1. Figure 3 shows a sectional view of the device on the line z g in Figure 2. Figure 4 shows my device in position on a leather finishing machine on which it is designed for use.
Referring again to Figure 1, A shows the oil reservoir in which is placed a supply of oil sufiicient to keep saturated the applying unit B, which is insured a uniform contact with the roller to which the oil is applied by the constant pressure of the adjustable spring C, see Figures 2 and 3.
In Figure 41. is illustrated a portion of the frame of a leather finishing machine, including the hide carrying roller H to which the device is intended to apply oil. The reservoir A is supported, as shown, upon a cross piece of the frame, directly beneath the roller H, and is provided with an attaching bracket I which is secured to the frame by the bolt J. In the operation of the device, during the finishing process, the hide is carried flat on the roller H, to which roller the oil is first applied by the unit B (or B).
Those familiar with the art to which my invention appertains will well understand the many advantages resulting from its use and will quickly recognize that the purposes hereinbefore set forth are fully accomplished.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America.
1. An oiling device for a leather finishing machine including a hide carrying roller over which the hide is adapted to pass in the operation of the machine, an oil reservoir positioned beneath the said roller, an oil-applying unit of absorbent material within the said reservoir, and a flat spring having one end anchored to the bottom of the said reservoir and having its free end supporting the said oil-applying unit in contact with the said roller.
2. An oiling device-for a leather finishing machine including a hide carrying roller over Which the hide is adapted to pass in the thereof and the unfastened portion flexed operation of the machine, an oil reservoir to extend upwardly in substantially parallel 10 positioned beneath the said roller and extend relation to the said bottom, and a strip of ing longitudinally "thereof, a bracket having .felt mounted EUPOH the said nn'fastened porone end attached to the said machine and its tion of the spring to engage the said roller other end supporting the said reservoir, a fiat for applying oil thereto.
