UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TIMOTHY H. EATON, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN IRONING'BOARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.157,680, dated December 15, 1874; application filed May 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, T. H. EATON, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in ironing-boards for shirts; and it consists in a board which is so shaped as to fit inside of a shirt under the bosom, and a frame which passes over and around the outside edges of the board, so as to stretch the bosom out evenly and clamp it in that position, as will be more fully set forth hereafter.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
or represents the ironing-board, so shaped as to fit nicely inside of a shirt, and which has an extension, b, formed upon one end. which projects through the neck of the shirt for the double purpose of stretching the bosom at this point and forming a support for the frame 0. This frame corresponds to the shape of the board, and. is made to fit down. over the outside edges, as shown, one of its ends resting upon the top of the extension I), so as to prevent it from slipping down past the board and to bind the two parts more firmly together.
In order to make the frame and board fit flush together, so that no impediment will be offered to the movement of the iron, there are recesses cut in the top of the extension and the under side of the frame, where they come together, as shown. The frame is made slightly larger than the board, so that after the board has been inserted in the shirt the frame will just fit down neatly over the two and stretch and clamp the shirt in position at the same time, at a single movement.
I am aware that an ironing-board having a frame which fits snugly around it, and which frame is supported in position by means of a cross-bar which rests upon the top of the board, and a shoulder formed on the end of the board, is not new, when broadly claimed, and I disclaim such.
My invention consists in forming a notched extension on the end of the'board by means of which alone the frame is supported in position. Having thus described my invention, I claim In an ironing-board for shirts, the combination of the board a and frame 0, the board having a notched extension, 1), upon one end, by means of which alone the frame is supported and held in position,- substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of May, 187 4.
