UNITED STATES WILLIAM EXCELL BAKER, O15 BRIGHTON, ENGLAND.
IRONING MACHINE.
Application filed June 22, 1925. Serial No. 38,933.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM Exonnn BAKE-n, a subject of the King of Great- Britain and Ireland, residing at Brighton, in the county of Sussex, England, have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing Machines, of which the following is a specification, and for which I have filed application for Letters Patent in. Great Britain on June 10, 1924-, said application bearing Number 14,066 of 1924. g
This invention relates to ironing machines of the type in which a flat iron of such a weight as will give the desired and necessary pressure is employed and is adapted to travel to and fro over a fixed table adapted to carry the work and to have a sideways motion imparted to it, and it he for its object to enable a sideways or swiveling movement to be imparted to the iron by the same handle which controls the reciprocating movement of the iron. In existing types of such machines the iron is carried by a bracket which is mounted both to slide on a longitudinally arranged guide and to rock on said guide to enable the iron to contact the table over which it is arranged to work, and a reciprocating motion is imparted to said bracket by coupling it by means of a clutch to either the top or bottom part of a continuously moving belt or band travelling around two pulleys as described in my specification of my earlier Patent No. 1,423,068.
I attain this end by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a broken view in plan showing a construction adapted to give a partial sideways movement to the iron, and llignre 2 is a view in side elevation showing ail ironing machine embodying this inven tion.
The iron- '1. is carried by a. spindle 2 which is mounted to slide vertically in a bracket 4 which is mounted on a guide bar 4* so that it free both to slide and rock on id bar and has a rec" roosting motion imparted to it by any suitable means h as the t am oiling belt 15. The hand lever 5 which controls both movements-of the iron is pivoted by a vertically arranged pin 5* to the shaft 6 the rocking of which about its axis con trols the clutch 16which operates to couple the bracket 4 with "by suitable ii.1 1'l'()'i" clutch may empoyed, that to bfif'llfietl in the specification. et-

my prior Patent No. 1,423,068 being a con An extension 7 of the hancb lever 5 1s connected with the lron 1 in advenient one.
vance of. the spindle 2 by a link 8 so that in addition to the rocking movement for giving said shaft the necessary movement to actuate said mechanism to cause the iron to travel backwards and forwards over the table it can be rocked in the horizontal plane i. e. to and from the iron to impartthe desiredsidewa s or swiveling movement to the iron through the connecting link 8 by rocking the handle 5 in the horizontal plane about the pivot In the connection between the hand lever 5 and the iron 1 is a universal joint which will allow the iron to have independent vertical movement relative to said lever. I
In order to restrict the movement of the iron to its normal straight course any suit able means may be employed for locking the iron to the reciprocating element 4 in order to prevent any relative rocking or sideways movement between said parts. A convenient device isthat shown in the accompanying drawing which consists of a spring arm 13 fixed to the element 4 and carrying at its free end a pin 14 adapted to engage a To keep the pin 14 on the spring arm 13 out of engagement with the iron when it is desired to rock said iron about its pivot 27, said spring arm is turned through an angle of 180 to bring the pin clear of the iron as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
What I claim is 2+- In an ironing machine in which a flat iron carried by a bracket is caused to travel and fall relative to said table, and in which the to and fro movement is controlled by mechanism operated through a shaft to which an axial rocking movement is imparted by a hand. lever carried by said shaft; the improvement which on sists in pivotally mounting the iron on a vertical pivot in said bracket pivoting the hand lever on a vertical pivot in said shaft, extending said hand lever beyond its pivotal point, and in providing a link loosely pivotally connected both to the hand lever extension and the iron to enable a horizontal pivotal movement to be imparted to the iron by the hand lever.
