IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-REGULATCRS FOR VULCANIZERS.

canizers of the class used by dentists in the preparation of artificial dentures, and in which a gas heatingapparatus is employed. In such apparatus it is desirable to maintain a uniform temperature for a considerable time while the vulcanization is being effected.
The object of my inventionis automatically to regulate this temperature. To attain this end I employ, in connection with the usual thermometer to indicate the temperature of the vulcanizer, a coiled tube connected with the steam-space of the vulcanizer, constituting a steam-trap. The pressure of the steam acts against a steam-valve, forcing the valve-rod against the elastic walls of the tube through which the gas flows to the heater. The degree or limit of heat desired is fixed by means of a thumbscrew on the valve-rod, which acts as a stop to limit its upward movement, and this degree or limit of heat is maintained by the action of the regulator, as the valve-sprin g leaves the gas-supply tube open to its full capacity until the limit of highest temperature is reached, when the tube is compressed laterally by the rising of the valve, and the flow of gas thus diminished until the normal tem perature has been regained. The ad vantages of this method of operation are obvious.
In the accompanying drawings, which show my invention as embodied in the best way now known to me, Figure 1 represents aview in elevation of my improved apparatus; Fig. 2, a longitudinal central section therethrough, and Fig. 3 a view of the gas-pipe detached.
A steam-pipe, A, connected with the boiler of a vulcanizer, is coiled, as shown at a, to form a steam-trap, and leads into a valvechamber provided with a diaphragm-valve, B, and coiled spring I), of well-known construction. The rod or stem B of the valve is movable endwise in bearings in the casing O. The extent of this movement in one direction is controlled by means of an adjustable thumbscrew or stop, 0, on the valve-stem, which abuts against the framing to limit the out ward range of the valve-rod. The outer end of the valve-stem abuts against the wall of the gas-supply tube D, which is slotted at this point, said slot being covered by an elastic diaphragm, d; or a gutta-percha pipe may be employed, if preferred. The usual regulating thermometer is attached to this apparatus.
It is deemed unnecessary here to show or describe the vulcanizer, or its connection with the regulator, as the construction and mode of operation of the vulcanizer are well known.
The operation of my improved regulator will readily be understood from the foregoing description. The operator, having ascertained by experiment the amount of gas required to produce the proper temperature of a vulcanizer, regulates this flow by means of the thumb-screw. Should the temperature fall below the desired point the steam-pressure would be diminished, the valve would be depressed by its spring, and its rod withdrawn from contact with the gas-supply tube, thus allowing it to open to its full capacity, which would increase the gas-supply, and consequently raise the temperature. Should the temperature rise beyond the desired limit the valve-rod would rise and push in the side wall of the gas-supply pipe, thus diminishing the flow of gas until the temperature has sufficiently lowered.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a gas-supply pipe having yielding walls and a valve-rod or regulator actuated by the steam-pressure of the vulcanizer, and acting directly upon the yield-- ing wall of the gas-supply pipe automatically tovary its area, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
2. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the steam-supply pipe, its trap, the valve-rod or regulator, the adjustable stop thereon, and the gas-supply pipe, whereby the vulcanizer will automatically be maintained at the temperature at which it has been adjusted by the operator.
