CLARENCE J. BEIGH, F AL'I'OONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
@ELECTRIC SIGNAL LAMP FOR RAILWAY SJVI'llCI-IES.v
Application filed September 24,1925. Serial No. 58,390.
710 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE J REIGH, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Signal Lamps for Railway Switches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same. 7
This invention relates to an electric signal lamp for railway switches.
The prime object is to provide a novel construction wherein the present signal lamp and mounting may be used; together with the lamp frame or casing, so as to readily, inexpensively and expeditiously adapt the main parts of a present signal lamp supporting and operating structure to the practiceof the present invention.
Another object is to provide a structure using a novel bracket substantially in the form'of a yoke attachable at one end to the lamp and at the other end to the stem, and having its bridge vertical and ofl'set.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a view showing the invention in front elevation;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line H of Figure 1; and
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of a modified form of lamp-carrying bracket which may be used.
Referring specifically to the drawings, a tie or other support is shown at for a stem 11 disposed in upstanding relation thereto and journaled in a suitable bearing comprising a plate 12 and bracket 12 secured thereto. These parts form the usual construction of a railway switch signal lamp operating means. The stem 11 has the usual opening 13 in which the operating parts are connected in the usual manner in order t rock or turn the stem.
In carrying out the present invention, a bracket s provldedas at 1 1', beingayoke or U-shaped, having its bridge 15 vertically lamp shown at 18. This lamp or lamp casing 18 is of usual construction and is bolted or otherwise removably secured as at 19 to the arm or plate 17. V
In the present instance, in lieu of the use of oil to illuminate thelamp, an electric bulb 19 is disposed within the lamp and is earned by a pipe or conduit 20, which 1s stationary and extends up into the casing 18 at the vertical center thereof. The conduit 20 is irregular to adapt it to its surrounding and wires from a suitable source of electricity pass through the'conduit to the lamp 19 in order to illuminate the same. It will be realized that as the pipe or conduit 40 is stationar the lamp 18 is adapted to turn relatively thereto with the bracket 14 and that the offset 15 permits the necessary movement of the lamp irrespective of the adjacency or location of the pipe or con duit 20.
In using the invention, it will be realized that the ordinary lamp is used, minus its wick and means of oils-upply, that such lamp may be secured in place by the bracket 14; and that the light is supplied by the bulb 19.
If desired the bracket 14 may be made from a single bar of metal appropriately bent into shape and for instance like the bracket 21 shown in the modified form of Figure 5. Such bracket has an attaching arm 22 adapted for connection in any suitable Inanner rigidly to the stem 11 and having a plate or arm 23 adapted for connection to the lamp casing 18 and also having an opening 24 therethrough to accommodate the pipe or conduit 20.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention 1. In combination with a switch-operated stem, a bracket secured thereto, a signal lamp carried by the bracket, and stationary means extending to the lamp to form a conduit for electric Wires for the illuminating means of the lamp.
2. In combination with a stem operated by a switch, a bracket attachable to the stem, a signal lamp carried by the bracket, said bracket having an offset portion, a conduit extending to thelamp and adapted as a means for passage of conductors therethrough' to the illuminating means of the lamp.
3. In combination with a stem operable by a switch, a bracket having a portion attachable to said stem and having an arm a lamp carried by said arm, a conduit extending through said arm and into said lamp at a portion thereof coaxial with said stem, said conduit being adapted to accommodate electric Wires for the illuminating means of the lamp, and the bridge of said bracket being offset with respect to said portion.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CLARENCE J. REIGH.
