UNITED STATES WAKEMAN H; B. CRONK, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
CASE.
Application filed April 4, 1925.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, NAKEMAN H. B. CRoNK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This'invent-ion relates to a map or chart case, the general object of the invention being to provide means for supporting a pluralityof maps, charts or the like in a case so that they are protected from dust and the like, with means for bringing the desired chart or map to a position where it can be drawn from the case.
Another object of the invention is to place each chart or map on a spring roller so that it can be kept in wound condition when not in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a blackboard on the supporting part of the case, with means for permitting the board to be turned so that either face can be used. 7
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described,-
illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim. 1
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation with parts.
removed.
Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary section on line 4- 1-01? Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a sectional detail view through a portion of the frame and showing one of the stops 18 for holding the blackboard against movement.
In these views, 1 indicates an upright supporting frame which has casters 2 on its base portions and is formed with a casing 3 at its top. The bottom of the casing is provided with an opening 4: and a shaft- 5 passes through the casing. Discs 6 are fastened to the shaft and are arranged adja cent the ends of the casing. A plurality of Serial No. 20,793.
spring rollers 7 have their pintles engaging holes in the discs so that the rollers are rotatably supported by the discs and the sheets 8, containing the maps or charts or the like, are carried by these rollers. Each sheet has a handle 9 at its outer end which will extend through the opening at in the casing when the reel formed by the shaft anddiscs is turned to a position where a roller is above the opening. This will permit the handle to be grasped and the map or chart unrolled so that it can be observed. The handles are preferably formed of yokeshape with rollers forming the handle parts with the bottom of the case sloping from each side towards the center so that the rollers-on the handles will travel down one sloping portion to the opening and up the other sloping portion when leaving the opening. A pulley 10 is fastened to the projecting end ofthe shaft 5 and a cable 11 passes over this pulley and over a pulley 12 which is provided with a crank handle 13 at the side of the support so that the shaft can be easily rotated by a person standing at one side of the supporting frame. A dial 1% containing numbers indicating the number of rolls in the case is arranged on one end of the case and an arrow 15 is fastened to the pulley 10 and cooperates with this dial to indicate which map or chart is in a position to be unrolled through the opening 4:.
A flat surface is carried by the supporting frame and forms a rest for the maps or charts when in unrolled position and I prefer to form a portion of this frame by a double faced blackboard 16 which is mounted to rotate about a horizontal axis through means of the pintles 17 at the sides of the board engaging portions of the frame. This board is held in vertical position by the stops 18 arranged on the pulleys 19 mounted on the stub shafts 20 carried by the supporting frame and these pulleys are manipulated to cause the stops to engage and disengage the blackboard through means of a cable 21 which has a portion wrapped around each pulley and which passes over the guiding pulleys 22 on the frame and is looped around a pulley 23 at one edge of the frame to which a handle 24 is attached. Thus by raising and lowering the handle 24 the cable is moved to rotate the pulleys 19 to swing the stops upwardly out of engagement with the blackboard, to permit the blackboard to be moved, as in dotted lines in Figure l or to cause said stops to engage "the blackboard to hold it against movement. The handle 24 is arranged adjacent thehandle .13 .so that both the blackboard and the map carrying reel can be moved from one side of the device. A lamp 25 may be fastened to a part of the frame for illuminating thema'psan'd blackboard.
From the foregoing it will beiseen that I have 'provided'a simple device for supporting a plurality of maps, chartsandthe like, in rolled up condition and :covered :so that they will be kept free of dust, 'WithJmeans whereby the reel can be turned to permit the desired .map or chart 'to be unrolled. from its roller. The map will rest against the flat-surface formed in part by the blackboard so that it Will be keptiniflat condition 'While being used. After the map has be'en .used it is simply necessary to give it :a slight jerk'to oause'the spring in its roller-to Wind it :up upon its roller. When the maps are not being used the blackboard can be used and the blackboard can be adjusted so that either side can be brought into use.
combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within ithescopeoftheappended claim.
What I claim is A device of the class described comprising an upright'iframe, a casing at the'upper-end thereof, .a shaft passing through 'the casing, apair of discs onthe shaft \vithinithe casing,
spring rollers carried by the discs, :sheets rolled upon the rollers, handles at theouter ends of the sheets, the casing having an opening in its bottom through which the handle of the lowermost sheet will project,
.a pulley on the outer end of the shaft, :a
hand operated pulley on the frame, a cable passing over the pulleys, .a ffinger ion "the pulley on the shaft anda dial on the casing with which tlie finger cooperates .toiindicate the position of the'rolls in the case.
