IMPROVEMENT IN BRISTLE-BUNDLING MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,614, dated December 8, 1874; application filed September 22, 1874.

Be it known that I, LOUIS F. LANNAY, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Machine for Bundling Bristles, of which the following is a specification:

My machine consists essentially of two jaws, having semicircularindentations for the reception and compression of the bristles into bunches or bundles, one jaw being fixed and the other capable of' vibration about a pivot placed in that end of it which is remote from the indentations.

My machine further comprises a pair of' curved bars, which, projecting from the side of the fixed jaw, one on each side of said indentation, and concentric with the sweep of the movable jaw, traverse suitable orifices therein, and serve both as a guide to said jaw, and as a curb to prevent the bristles from spreading, during the operation of crowding into the indentations, as the movable jaw is bein g closed. j

My machine further comprises a treadle for closing, and a spring or its equivalent to secure the automatic opening or retraction of', the movable jaw.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure lis a perspective view of a machine embodying my invention, the same being shown in its open condition. Fig. 2 is a top view ot' the same.

A may represent a bench or table, of' any suitable form, and of convenient height for manipulating the bristles. B is a ixed, and C amovable, jaw, of' similar form, one end ot' the jaw C being secured by a pivot, l), and the other end being guided by curved bars E E', which project from the fixed bar B, in a position concentric with pivot D, and occupy orifices c in the bar C. Those portions of said jaws opposing edges which are included between the guides E E are notched, coved, or scalloped out, as shown. F is a treadle, hinged at f beneath the table, and

` connected by a cord, Gr, passing over a pulley, H, with the movable jaw C. I is a spring which operates to automatically retract the movable jaw C.

The operation of my bundler is veryr simple and efficient. A bunch ot' bristles being inserted butt downward in the oblong inclosure formed by the two guides E E and the indented jaws B C, a depression of the trcadle operates to close the movable jaw, and, by so doing, to compress the bundle into a cylindrical form. The movable jaw C, being held at one end with perfect security by the pivot D, and at the other end by the concentric guides E E', cannot possibly bind or jam while in operation, and is, moreover, of cheap and simple construction, and not liable to derangement of any sort.

, A weight carried over a sheave or pulley may be used instead of the spring I.

The location-of the coves or indentations near that end of the jaws remote from their point of attachment gives the requisite capacity, and permits the operator to he close to his work, while the txture of one jaw to a bench or table, and the treadle and spring attachment to the other jaw, enable the device Vto be worked by the foot of the operator, and

leave his hands at liberty.

The table A acts as a substantial support, as well as a gage for the bristles. I

I do not claim novelty in the coved and pivoted jaws, nor in the concentric guides, broadly considered; but

I claim as new and of my invention- In a machine for bundling bristles, the combination of fixed clampB, the pivoted clamp C` said clamps having matrices on their opposing surfaces near their free ends, the concentric fixed guiding-curbs E E', consisting of flat plates set on edge, so as to present a iiat face to the bristles, and the retracting-spring I, the whole workin g on a supporting-gage table, A, and operated by a treadle, F Gr H, for the purpose set forth.
