Application filed Mayllt), 1925. Serial No. 31,2 55'. i
'1'0 all whom it may concern: I 1
Be it known-that I, ADoLm-rMoRrrz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State 5 of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tie-Lock Seals of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in a sealing means and more particu- 10 larly those in connection with freight cars.
It comprises a seal which in its preferred form is applied to any freight car door of standard construction and is so devised that it will readily disclose any evidence of molestation.
A further object of the present device relates to a seal so constructed that both ends will be securely interlocked and ample space will be left on the ends to provide for road or business names or initials and seal numbers or symbols.
For the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects, as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts generally shown in the accompanying drawing and described in the specification, but more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, in which Figure 1 is a plan view showing the seal embodying the present invention before it is interlocked.
Figure 2 is a plan view illustrating the position of the ends after being thrust through the slot, and after the first bend of end 2 around and underneath the end 3.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the seal after the ends have been completely interlocked.
The sealing member 1 is preferably constructed from sheet or other similar metal of any desired length, and has formed on the opposite edges on the end 2 notches, preferably V-shaped 4 and 4' and 5 and 5', located intermediate the extreme end and the middle of the band.
The indentation or groove or scoring or chilling 9, across the metal between the notches 5 and 5 located intermediate the extreme end 2 and the middle of the band is r for the purpose of weakening the metal, and any other means would suffice for obtaining this purpose.
There is formed on the respective edges of the opposite end ofthe band'notches 6 and 7, preferably in an elongated V-shape,
l'ocated'intermediate the middle of the band i locking notches and the extreme ends of. the band to provide for any labelling of names, initials or numbers as may be desired to place on the respective ends.
When the end 2 of the band is inserted through the slot 8 the notch 4 onthe right edge of the end 2 of the band will interlock with the edge of the upper end 10 of the slot 8 and will positively hold the right notch 4: securely engaged with the slot.
When the first bend is made of the end 2 around and underneath the end 3 at notches 5 to 5 the indented, grooved, scored chilled or weakened reduced portion 9 will seat in notch 6 on the right edge of end 3 of the band.
The manner of operation of the seal to a 2 locked position will be evident fromthe above description. The band will be inserted through a hasp or other members andthe end 2 drawn through the slot; 8 until the notch 4 reaches the slot. It will then be moved upward to engage the upper end 10 of the slot and then bent down over the edge of notch 6 at the indented, grooved,
scored, chilled or weakened reduced portion 9, to cause a break of the material between the notches 5 and 5 when unbent. After it has been so bent underneath the end 3 it will be bent over the end 3 at line 11, the s all such legitimate constructions as may fairly be :embodied within the spirit and scope of theinvention'as"=c1airned.
l. A sealing band having a diagonal slot near one end, the other endb'eing "adapted for passage thru said slot and to be bent around the first-mentioned end, and locking means located near said ends to hold -the ends in locked relation when the said other end is passed thruisaid slot and-bent arbund the first-mentioned end. r
2. A sealing Iband having ,a diagonal slo't one endrdaptedab interlock with the slot and notches adjacent thereto,)tl1e bandhav- 'ing therein a weakened portion near the said one end whereby the band When looked eannot be nnloeked without breaking at said portion. a
In testimony whereof- I. ai'fix my signature.
