Description

s. B. FULLER.
Painting Wheels. No. 15,759; Patented Sept. 23,1856.
AM. PHDTb-LlTHlClLNN. (OSBORNE'S PROCESS.)
UNITED STATES FATE T FFICE.
S. B. FULLER, OF VORTHINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
MACHINE FOR PAINTING CARRIAGE-WHEELS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,759, dated September 23, 1856.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, S. B. FULLER, of WVorthington, in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Painting Wheels for Childrens Wagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, said drawing being a vertical section of my improvement, the plane of section being through the centera My invention consists in having a vibrating and rotating spindle pass through the bottom of a tub or reservoir in which the paint is placed. The wheels being placed, one at a time, upon the spindle, immersed in the paint by depressing the spindle and then raised above the surface of the paint and the spindle rotated so that the superfluous paint will be thrown from the wheel by centrifugal force. I
To enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a rectangular frame having a tub B, secured on its upper part, and C, is a vertical spindle, the upper part of which works in a stufliing box D, attached to the inner side of the tub B. The lower part of the spindle Q, rests upon a spiral spring E, the spindle being allowed to work of play vertically through its lower bearing. On the spindle C, there is placed a bevel wheel F, into which a bevel wheel G, gears. The
wheel G, is placed on the inner end of a horizontal shaft H, which has a pinion on its outer end, said pinion gearing into a wheel J, which is the driving wheel.
K, is a collar which is attached permanently to the spindle C, and L, is a lever which works on a fulcrum o, the inner end of the lever being forked and fitting in the collar K.
The operation is as follows: The tub B, is supplied with the requisite quantity of paint M, and the wheels N, are placed, one at a time, on the upper end of the spindle C, the spring E, keeping the wheel N, above the surface of the paint. The spindle C, is then depressed, by shoving down the outer end of the lever L and the wheel N, is immersed in the paint and then allowed to ascend to its original position the wheel J, is then rotated and the superfluous paint is thrown from the wheel N, by centrifugal force.
The above machine has been practically tested and operates well, two men can perform as much work with it, in a given time, as ten men can by painting in the usual way.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The vibrating and rotating shaft C, passing into the tub B, and arranged and operated as shown or in an equivalent way for the purpose specified.
