"rul-:n SNmnu, and CHARLES HAMILTON, citi- Zeus of the United States, residing at Poplar Blu'lf, in the county of Butler and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jumpers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in jumpers and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which, in addition to assuring effective exercise for the child, serves to afford a maximum of amusement.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind adapted to be attached to the leg and which is provided with means whereby the user may readily jump about and wherein said jumping activities are materially facilitated.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts ofI our improved jumper whereby certain important Yadvantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of your invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating jumpers constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention and in applied position, the coacting nether limbs being diagrammatically indicated by broken lines;

Figure 2 is a view in top plan of one of the devices as herein shown;

Figure 3 is an enlarged view in side elevation of a jumper as herein set forth;

Figure 4 1s a view partly in front elevation and partly in section of the structure as illustrated in Figure 3.

In practice, one of our improved devices is adapted to be attached to each leg of the child and, as herein disclosed, each of the devices or appliances comprises an elongated brace or member 1 preferably of Wood which is provided' at its upper end with a crossed member 2 to which is Secured the central vnorton of a strap 3; This strap 3&5 adapted to be disposed around the leg to hold the upper portion of the member 1 the-reto. As herein disclosed, one extremity of the strap 8 is provided with a conventional buckle 4 with which the op-posite end portion of the strap is adapted to be adjustably connected as the occasions of practice may require.

The lower end portion of the member 1 is received within a socket or recess 5 produced in the upper face of a block 6 of metal or wood and to one side of the center' of such block. The 'block 6 also has disposed therethrough an opening 7 the u per portion :L of which being of enlarged diameter. Slidably disposed through the lower portion of the opening 7 is a cylindrical plunger 8, of metal or wood, and which has its outer or lower end portion surrounded by a. metal ferrule 9 in order to increase the efliciency thereof. Resting upon the upper face of the block (i is a pedal or foot rest 10 secured in applied position by the screws 11 or the like, said screws also serving to hold in applied position the metallic plate l2 extending over an opening 14 registering with the adjacent or upper end of the enlarged portion a of the opening 7 in the block.

The applied plate 12 provides an abutment for the expansible member or coil spring 15 the opposite end 'of which being in direct contact with the inner or inserted end of the plunger 8. The rear portion of the pedal or foot rest 10 is defined by the upstanding heel piece 16 with which is operatively engaged the straps 17 to engage over the instep of the foot. The forward or toe porti-on of the pedal or foot rest 10 is provided with the strap 18 for engagement over the forward or toe portion of the foot.

The portion of the member or brace l 95 within the socket or recess 5 is held in such assembly by a screw 19 or the like and the crossed member 2 is disposed lengthwise on a curvature to substantially conform to the portion of the leg with which it coacts.

In practice, with our improved device in applied position, the child may readily jump about. such jumping activities being materially facilitated by the action of the expansible members or springs 15.

From the foregoing description it yis thought to be obvious that a jumper constructed in accordance with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason ofthe convenience and facility with 110 which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that ourvinvention is susceptible of some change and modiiication without departing'from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

1. A device of the class described comprising` in combination, a block, an elongated brace having one end portion secured to said block, leg attaching means carried by the brace, an opening disposed through the block. a plunger extendingwithin the opening through an end thereof, a pedal secured to the block and having an opening registering with the opening of the block, a plate, secured to the pedal and overlying the opening in the pedal, an expansible member Within the openings in the block and pedal and interposedbetween the inserted end of the plunger and the plate, and foot engaging means carried by the pedal.

A device of the class" described comprising, in combination, a block, an elongated brace having one end portion secured to said block, leg attaching means carried by the brace, an opening disposed through the block. a plunger extending within the opening through an end thereof, a pedal secured to the block and having an opening registering with the opening of the block,

y a plate secured to the pedal and overlying the opening in the pedal, an expansible member Within the openings in lthe block and pedal and interposed between the inserted end of the plunger and the plate, and foot engaging means carried by the pedal, said block lbeing elongated, the brace being secured to the block adjacent one end portion' and the pedal being arranged at the opposite end portion.

A devlce of the class described com prising, in combination, a block, an elongated brace having one end portion secured to said block, the end portion of the brace remote from the block being provided with a crossed member, leg engaging means carried by said crossed member, an opening disposed through the block, a plunger. extending within the opening through an end thereof, a pedal secured to the block and having an opening registering with the opening of the block, a plate secured to the pedal and overlying the opening in the pedal, an expansible member within the openings in the block and pedal and interposed between the inserted end of the plunger and the plate, and foot engaging means carried by the pedal.

A device of the class described comprising, in combination, a block, an elongated brace having one 'end portion secured to said block, leg attaching means carried by the brace, an opening disposed through the block', a plunger extending Within the opening through an end thereof, a pedal secured to the block and having an opening registering with the opening of the block, a plate secured to the pedal and overlying the opening in the pedal, an expansible member Within the openings in the block and pedal and interposed between the inserted end of the plunger and the plate, and foot engaging means carried by the pedal, the portion of the opening of the block in which the expansible member is positioned being transversely enlarged.
