UNITED STATES FREI) W. ORTH, F OCEAN PARK, WASHINGTON.
SAW SET.
Application led `October 16, 1924. Serial No. 743,882.
' T0 all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it hereby known that I, FRED W. On'rH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ocean Park, in the county of Pacific and State of l/Vashington, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Saw Set, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to the art of setting saws, and more particularly to the art of setting saws by foot power.
The object of my invention is to provide an exceedingly simple and efiicient saw set which will enable even an unskilled mechanic to do a first class job atsaw setting.
A second object is to so construct the device, that foot power can be employed, leaving the hands of the operator free to handle the saw.
Another object is to provide a unique and very accurate means for determining eX- aclly what the gage will lbe when the setting operation is completed.
Another object is to so construct the device, that it will be inexpensive to manufacture and not liable to get out of repair.
I accomplish these results in the manner set forth in the following specification as illustrated in the accompanyingdrawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan of my device of which Figure 2 is a vertical section taken along the line 2-2 in Figure 3.
Figure 3 is a side elevation having the lowermost portion broken away in longitudinal section.
Figure 4 is a front elevation of the stirrup for the power attachment.
Similar numbers of reference refer to the same parts throughout the views.
Referring in detail to the drawing, I have constructed my device on abase 1.0 which is provided with a slot 11 and holes for the screws 12 by means of which the device can be attached to a convenient bench.
On the top of the base 10, I have formed a standardv 13, whose overhanging portion 14 is provided with a plunger 15 which is pointed and shaped at its lower end, to suit a saw tooth.
Above the arm 14 and around the plunger i On the standard 13, I have hinged a curved le ver 19, by means of the pin 2O which crosses the slot 21 in the standard 13. The outer end 22, of the curved lever 19 is slotted to receive the strap 23, provided with the perforation 24 at its upper end and having at its lower end a stirrup 25, which is adjusted to the foot of the operator.
On the base 10 and under the plunger 15, is placed an anvil 26 having a ridge 27 formed on its underside adapted to slide freely in the slot 11. The anvil 26, is provided on its upper side with a sloping groove 28, whose purpose will be explained later. A bar 29, over the anvil 26 is held down by the screws 30. In order to. show the relation of my device to a saw during a setting operation, I have indicated a saw 31 in Figure 3.
The operation of my device is as follows Then sharpening a saw, it is only necessary to place same on the anvil 26 with its teeth 32 touching` the bar 29 and then slide the saw along until a tooth is directly under the plunger 15. Pressure on the lever 19, applied through the stirrup 25, causes the tooth 32 to be set or bent downwardly in to the groove 28. As the groove 28, is sloping, it is evident that the amount of set can be accurately determined by the position of the anvil and this is done with the aid of the graduations 33 on the face of the anvil 26.
I am aware that many forms of saw set have been constructed in the past, I therefore do not claim such devices broadly, but I do intend to cover all such forms and modiications as fall fairly within the appended claim.
I claim:
A saw set having, in combination, a slotted base plate having a gooseneck standard on its upper side, said standard having a vertical guide over the slot in said plate; an
anvil slidably mounted in said slot, said anvil having a sloping slot formed therein whose sides are parallel with and whose sloping portion is over said plate slot; a transverse bar for clamping said anvil and forming a stop for the saw teeth; a plunger in said guide clearing the front of said clamp; a roller at the'top of said plunger; a spring between said roller and guide; and a lever hiplged to said standard and resting on said ro er.
