Be it known that I, HOWARD Dn CoRnnvoN'r, a citizen of the United States, and-a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inVFittings for Bathtubs and the like, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to discharge fittings for bath tubs and the like and its object is to provide an improved fitting for use in connection with a bottom drain and an overflow from the tub. Another object is to provide an improved fitting which is adapt-j ed to be rendered accessible for inspection or repair without the necessity of providing a removable panel, as usual in connection with bath tubs. Other objects of the invention will appear from the following specification. n
The invention consists Ain the several novel vfeatures hereinafter set forth andmore particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof. In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a `fitting embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of the fitting showing the parts in position to render the drain valve accessible for removal. j The invention is exemplified as applied to a bath tub to which is connected the usual bottom drain 4 and an overflow 5 which may be of any suitable construction and as well understood in the art. The bottom drain 4 is connected to a fitting 6 by means of a packed joint 7 and said fitting is connected by a packed joint 8 to the drain-pipe 9. The overflow 5 is connected to a T-fitting 10 by a packed joint 11 and a vertical pipe 12 is connected to the lower end of fitting 10 to conduct the overflow downwardly tothe fitting G. A pipc'l is connected to the upper end of fitting 10 and a rod 14 extends through pipes 12 and 13 and has its upper end connected tozfny suitable shifting device or handle, as well understood in the art. Rod 14 is suitably connected to operate a sleeve valve 15 which is adapted to close on I a seat 16 and to control the flow of liquid from bottom-drain 4 to the fitting-6. `When the valve 15 is lifted, drainage can flow from drain 4 to the discharge pipe 9. The lower end of rody 14 is screw-threaded to a stem 17 ,A to the lower' end of which is secured a valve. 18l which is ada"ted kto close against a seat 20 formed in the uwer and of valve 15g valve-15` so that when-the latter is raised to permit the discharge of drainage from the bottom of the tub, communication between the fitting 6 and the overflow 5 will be closed to prevent the waste (dirty water) from surging up into and through' overflow pipe 12. A stop plate 22 is suitably secured on the upper end ofstem 17 and a nut 23 threaded to the rod 14 is adapted to engage plate 22 to limit the drop of'valve 18. Plate 22 has openings therein to permit water to pass from pipe 1.2 into sleeve valve 15. When rod 14 is lowered, as shown in Fig. 1, sleeve-valve 15 will be closed to hold the water in the tub and, at such time, valve 18 will be open to permit the overflow to pass through valve 15 into pipe 9.. When rod 14 is raised, sleeve valve y15 willcbe positioned so that'water from drainv 4 will be free to pass into pipe 9 vandv valve 18 will be closed to prevent any drainage from surging or passing up into pipe'12.
In practice, it is occasionally necessary to clean out, repair ,or grind the valves 18, 20, and, in order to make it possible to readily remove the valves for these purposes, a pipe section 24 has its'lower end connected by a screw-thread 25 tothe upper end of fitting 6. The upper end of pipe-.section 24 laps the lower end of`pipe 12 and is connected thereto by a coupling 27 which is provided with a packing 28to provide a tight joint between section 24 and pipe 12. Packing 28 is provided between section 24 and the upper end of fitting 6.1 llVhen it is desired to have access to the valves, it is only necessary to unscrew coupling 27 and slide section 24 upwardly on pipe 12, as shown in Fig. 2. When the rod`14 is raised, the sleeve'valve 15 and valve" 18 can'be lifted into and vremoved through the between pipe 12 and fitting 6 upon its disconnection from rod 14. The pipe 12 and its conner-l tions are usually installed in a wall around the bath tub so that `they are inaccessible and, heretofore, so far as I am aware, it has been customary to install a removable panel in the wall so that it would not be necessary to tear down the wall when a repair was necessary to the drain fittings. An inherent advantage of the invention is that these removable panels may be dispensed with. In building the wall. around the ritt-ings, it is customary te provide a base-board 3U around the .lower partiva wall and along the floor. Y The plaster' of thewall Slis omitted, as at 32, behindthe base-board 30 so that upon removal of the base-board, the pipe sections, bottom f and its connections will be accessible. As a result, it is only necessary to remove the'base-board to provide the .desired access to the fittings.
The invention is notvtoibe .understoodas restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified withinthe scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit and. scope. ofthe invention.
