Be it known that I, WALTER IV. DAvIsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and,
useful Improvements in lVheels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in wheels and particularly in disk wheels of the single disk type.
Many different forms of disk wheelshave been made but so far as I know they are driven by a series of pins projecting from a flange on the inner hub through holes in the disk element and are fixed in position by a plurality of locking means engaging said pins usually in the form of nuts threaded upon the pins.
Moreover it is necessary to provide a special inner hub for such wheels and since the disk wheel is fixed to the inner flange of such hub, that portion of the hub projecting beyond the disk must be fully maf chined and finished to give a pleasing appearance.
Since the axle bearings of different automobiles vary it must of course follow that the inner hubs will vary not only in their internal contour but also in their length. This is a variance that may be disregarded in disk wheels of the forms mentioned above but when the inner hub is covered as in this invention it must be taken into considera tion.
The chief objects of this invention are to provide a disk wheel which is driven from the inner hubnot by pins projecting from the .inner hub but by the inner "hub itself; which is held in position by a single locking nut at kthe center of the disk; which includes a sleeve covering that portion of the inner hub which normally projects beyond the disk, the sleeve being formed independently of the disk solthat, in order to compensate for the varying lengths of inner hubs, sleeves of the proper'length can be selected.

Referring to the drawings the numeral 10 isused to designate a disk wheel embodying this invention and adapted to be mounted upon either a rear hub 11 or a front hub l2. The wheel l() comprises a wheel disk 13 having at its out-er periphery a Hange 14 lto which is secured by \\elding or other suitable means a rim l5 and an outwardly turned flange 1G surroundingY a central open-` ing 17; a backing plate 18 and a sleeve or collar 19, said sleeve and plate being secured to the front and rear faces respectively of the disk. The disk 13 isof uniform tl1ickness and as shown in the drawing is curved, the center portion being in f ront of, and the outer portion being behind. the median line 20 of the wheel which line is crossed by the disk approximately halfway between the hub and the rim.
The backing plate 18 lies in a plane at right angles to the axis ofl the wheel and the median line 20 preferably lies in that plane. By reason of the disk contour the larger part of the backing plate'is out of contact with .the disk as will appear from inspection of" Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. At the periphery of the plate 18 is a flange 2l, which has the same contour as the disk. This flange 21 1s permanently securedv to the disk 13 welding or other suitable means.
A flange 22 around the central opening 23 in the plate rests against the inner hub, the outer end of the flange bearing against the disk to which it may be rigidly secured if desired.
The inner end of the sleeve 19 rests upon the flange 16 of the disk 13: and is provided with an annular flange 24 which bears against and is rigidly secured to 'the outer face of the disk. When the wheel is mounted upon the inner hub the sleeve 19 `extends over substantially theentire length of the liti@ hub and since, as pointed out above, they` i length of the hub varies in different models of automobiles the length of the sleeve must vary correspondingly.v
The front and rear inner hubs 11 and 12 are alike with regard to the surfaces on which the wheel 10 rests and the same reference numerals will be applied to both. Adjacent the inner end of the hub is provided a flange 25 onv the outer face of which the flange 22 of the backing plate rests. The outer face 26 of the flange 25 is tapered and provided with corrugations 27 shownl most clearly in Fig. 3. The inner face 28 of the flange 22 is correspondingly tapered and corrugated so that no relative movement of rotation can take place between the wheel and the hub, and so that all driving impulses of rotation will be transmitted from either member to'the other. yThe advantages resulting from the use of this tapered corrugated connection are pointed out in the patent to House 1,363,598 dated December 28, 1920 and need not be detailed herein.
The sleeve 19 does not contact with the inner hub except at the flange 26 and is outwardly beveled around the mouth 29. The outer ends 30 of the hubs 11 and 12 are externallythreaded to receive the hub caps 31. The hub cap l31 has an outer annular beveled shoulder 32 which when the hub cap is threaded upon the end 3f) of the inner hub, bears against the beveled mouth 29 of the sleeve 19, the inner end 33 being projected through the mouth into the open space between the end 30 of' the hub andthe sleeve 19. The contact of the mouth 29 with the i hub cap 31 forces the wheel upon the tapered corrugated flange 25 until it firmly seats thereon in the position indicated in Figs. 1 and-2.
The wheel 10 is quickly demounted from the inner hub by removing the hub cap 3l 'which is preferably equipped with any locking device 34 such as that shown in the patent to House 1,166,130 December 28, 1915, to 'prevent any loosening due to jars or vibration. Since the outer -c'ontour of the front and rear hubs is the'same the wheels can be mounted upon either interchangeably.
In order to permit the valve stem 35, of the tire to lie in front of the disk 13 and thus allow easy access for inflation or deflation, a pocket 36 is formed in the disk. The pocket is made of such dimensions that the valve stem can be held against the rim y15 by the usual nut 37 and that the inflating tube of the filling pump or a 'pressure test'- ing gauge can be applied without difficulty,
thus eliminating certain of' the objections made to the usual type of disk, without the use 'of an angle valve or valve adapter.
In the modifications disclosed in Fig. 5 the inner hub 40 is provided with an annular shoulder 41 in front of the flange 42 which corresponds in every particular to the flange 25. When the wheel is mounted on the inner hub the flange 16 of the disk 13 rests upon the shoulder y4l thus providing a direct support for the disk in addition to that given by the flanges 21, 24. 'To further strengthen the lwheel the backing late 18, the disk/ 13 and the flange 24 o the sleeve 19 are clamped by the bolt and nut assembly 43, a collar or spacer 44 being inserted between the disk and plate. When this construction is used the sleeve 19 may be held against the disk solely by the bolt and nut assembly 43.
While two embodiments only have been shown and described I am not to be limited thereby since it is obvious that others may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention as set forth in the following claims.
Having thus described my invention that which I claim as new and for which I desire the protection of. Letters Patent of the United States is the following:
1. The combination with an inner hub having a tapered corrugated flange, of a disk wheel mounted on said hub, comprising a disk, a backing plate for said disk, flanges on both said disk and said plate, one of said flanges being tapered and corrugated to mesh with the flange on said inner hub, and means for securing said wheel upon said inner hub.
2. The combination |with an inner hub having a tapered corrugated flange, of a disk wheel mounted on said hub, comprising a disk, a backing plate :for said disk, flanges on both said disk and said plate, the flange on said backing plate being tapered and corrugated to mesh with lthe flange on said linner hub and-means for securing said wheel upon said inner hub.
3. The combination with an inner hub having a tapered corrugated flange, of a disk wheel mounted on said hub, comprising a disk, a backing plate for said disk, flanges on both said disk and said plate, the flange on said backing plate being tapered and corrugated to mesh with the flange on said inner hub, andthe flange on said disk resting upon said inner hub in front of said 4inner hub flange, and means for securingosaidy wheel upon said inner hub.
4. The combination with an inner hub having a tapered. corrugated flange. pf a disk wheel mounted on said hub, comprising a wheel disk, a plate secured to the back of said disk, a sleeve secured to the front of said disk, flanges on said disk and plate, one
of said flanges being tapered and corrugated to mesh with `the flange on said inner hubs, and means bearing against said sleeve for securing said wheel upon said inner hub.
5. The combination with an inner hub having a tapered corrugated flange, of a disk Wheel mounted on said hub, comprising a wheel disk', a plate secured to the back of said disk, a sleeve secured to the front of said disk, flanges on said disk and plate,
the flange on said backing plate being tapered and corrugated to mesh with the flange on said inner hub, and means bearing against said sleeve for securing said Wheel upon said inner hub.
6. The combination with an inner hub having a tapered corrugated flange, of a disk Wheel mounted on said hub, compris ing a Wheel disk, a plate secured to the back of saidV disk, "a sleeve secured to the front of said disk, flanges on said disk and plate, the flange on said backing plate being tapered and corrugated to mesh with the flange on said inner hub, and the flange on said disk bearing upon said inner hub and means bearing against said sleeve yfor securing said -wheel upon said inner hub.
7. The combination with an inner hub having a tapered corrugated flange, of al disk Wheel mounted on said inner hub, oomprising a wheeldisk, a plate secured to the back of said disk, flanges ony said disk and plate, the flange on said plate being tapered and corrugated to mesh with the flange on said inner hub, a sleeve resting at one end upon the flange on said disk and means carried by said inner hub and bearing against said sleeve for clamping said sleeve against said disk and seating-said plate flange onv said inner hub flange.
8. The combination with an innerA hub having a flange at its inner end, a disk Wheel bearing upon said flange, and including a disk element and a sleeve attached thereto, a hub cap carried by said hub and bearing against the end of said sleeve, said sleeve and hub cap enclosing said inner hub, the sleeve to be attached to the disk element being selected with-regard to the length of the inner hub.
